During World War II the first US Special Operations Forces (from any service) were instituted as the 1st Marine Raider Battalion and 2nd Marine Raider Battalion. Unfortunately the higher ups did not use them as their commanding officers had designed them (as rubber boat landing, operate behind enemy lines, hard motherfuckers). They were eventually re-designated (with the 3rd and 4th Battalions) as a re-constituted 4th Marine Regiment. We call 'em Raiders now for some reason.
In 2014, in a nod to their WWII fore bearers, the Marine Special Operations Regiment operating under MARSOC was re-designated the Marine Raider Regiment. Members of that regiment are called Marine Raiders.
