Anyway, on the topic of Goddess Mode's demise, I would ultimately consider it to be a success, though only by Zoe Quinn standards. Sure, it didn't sell well, but she actually managed to get it out, unlike the Chuck Tingle game and Rebel Game Jam and she can now check off comic books on the list of quirky nerd girl things she needs to do, which is probably all she wanted. She's probably bummed that it didn't get her more attention and twitter fights with CGers though.

It could be looked at from another angle as well.
Vertigo formed almost as a necessity to make a place for many stellar British writers who grew up on British comics instead of American super-hero comics. They could write very well but didn't want to write Superman. So Vertigo put out something different: Sandman, Preacher, Hell Blazer, they republished comics like V for Vendetta among other things. It was an outlet for people that didn't fit into the bread and butter business of the american comics industry, it was very successful and involved highly skilled and creative people.

SocJus Vertigo works the same way, it was SJW stories with SJW characters from "outsider" writers but no one had any real ambition or talent, plus they're catering to a crowd of triggered morons so it was a dismal failure from the start.

Additionally, comic book piracy is way easier now due to the rise of technology - especially when compared to 1940-1980.

As a casual fan trying to catch up (example - you want to read all of "Thor" because of the Marvel movies) you can try and track down several "anthology" books for $30, buy all back issues for $2-4 each, or just download a zip file for free.
