Were there any voice actor controversies in the 80s/90s/early 00's?

Not really like this from what I recall. Phil Hartman (The Simpsons) and Judith Barsi (child actor, Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven) were both murdered by their insane family members, although I suppose that's not really a controversy. Tress MacNeille (Babs Bunny from Tiny Toons) had a crazy obsessive fan who would stalk her to the point she refused to do any conventions in the state he lived in. They even characterized him and put him in the show to make fun of how creepy he was. Otherwise there were a number who were Scientologists and were sort of mocked, but outside of Isaac Hayes (Chef from South Park) it never really affected their work.

Most controversy was reserved for television and movie actors back then. Arguably nobody really gave a shit who was voicing cartoon characters until Disney cast Robin Williams as Aladdin and marketed the hell out of him and helped paved the way for people to actually start noticing the credits in cartoons. Aladdin is often credited as Patient Zero for casting celebrity voices over real voice actors for movies, but I like to think it also helped voice actors get more recognition overall too.

It was also a lot harder for people to make complete idiots of themselves before social media so any kind of exceptional behavior was mostly hard to document unless they were stumbling around starting drunk fist fights or getting caught beating off in a movie theater. If you look up some VAs from the 80s and 90s on Twitter, like say the people who voiced characters on the Kids WB block, you'll see them these days sperging out over Trump and other things, so maybe they were always exceptional, but we never got a chance to know.
