What did Marchi ever do as a "translator" other than insert her own butthurt political opinions into fake "translations" of another culture's art? That's only writing in the most cancerous, worthless sense. I suppose it's "writing" to spraypaint insults on a portrait of the leader of a country you hate, but nobody would consider a vandal to be a writer.

I want to see whether I'm some completely insane, biased asshole just looking at things through the lens of someone who admittedly utterly loathes one side of this case. I would really be chagrined and start looking at my own opinions of the case if he said no, you're both complete idiots.

I'm just amazed at the utter childishness of Lemon's behavior. Does he really think adults are never going to look at this shit? Does he even know what's happened in the case so far? Does he normally act like this?

This is even in the light of the fact that some of these technical issues, i.e. can you even quash a mere notice of a subpoena without the subpoena having been issued, are actual technical issues, but they're dumb issues, they're issues that can be resolved by the court invoking its inherent abilities that whatever the fuck you're doing, it's time for you to stop.

That's what makes all this so bizarre. Either they plan to serve a subpoena or not. If they don't, then the notice of intent is irrelevant; if they do, then a motion to quash, even if slightly premature, is perfectly reasonable (even if perhaps a bit mis-timed procedurally). Arguing over this specific detail is completely pointless, since best case it'll just delay the motion until you actually serve the subpoena.

Granted, they've been full of pointless delaying tactics, but this one probably won't even delay things very much.

Don't forget about the producers mocking angry weebs openly and brazenly.

For my money one of the most surreal things I witnessed with the multiple "culturalization" scandals Funimation had was this fucking ridiculous belief that they were allowed to show complete giggling fucking contempt for their own consumerbase and acted like said consumerbase being angry was an acceptable part of doing business.

I don't know what reality these assholes come from that dictates that insulting your primary revenue source is a good idea, but I'm assuming it's the same one that makes them think that Twitter is real life.

Probably the same as the one video game companies live in.

A more recent example was Persona 5, a translation so well done it caused several journos to reeeee that it was too Japanese and tried (and failed) to discredit it as 'inaccurate'
How the fuck can be too Japanese? Oh wait, these are the same people who are Amerocentric and can't be arsed to do any research.

I think adapting cultural references is a part of the art of localization. You need to consider 'is this cultural reference more important to be accurate, or more important for the consumer to understand?'

Anyone want to go back to the fansub days of the mid 2000s? At least 4Kids dubbing was hilariously bad.

I remember when Nippon Ichi brought Mugen Souls over.

Mugen Souls is all about anime tropes. I barely remember the game, but the heroine has various elemental forms she can change into. Except the forms are all based on weeb tropes. So instead of having like Fire, Water, Earth, Air, etc... you have... Graceful, Sadistic, Tundere, Masochist... 8 of them in total. And the enemies also have these elements. And there are elemental weaknesses. And attack styles, like "Hit," "Kind," "Confession," etc, each of said "elements" having different effects based on the target's... 8 moods. Imagine the Pokemon elemental weakness chart only with all the words randomized. Not even kidding. So you might have to figure out what elemental attack and style, like a Ditzy Confession, would do the best damage to a Egocentric enemy who happens to be Excited.

But here's the thing. When they localized it, they changed "Tsundere" to "Bipolar" alongside all the other weeb terms. Which is... not quite right, but kinda close I guess? But they left in the term Moe. Because... apparently there are anime fans out there that don't know what Tsundere is, but know Moe off the top of their heads.

honestly its not that off base. many corporations do this. Google is a perfect example. however you know the smart companies from the dumb ones by one fact: they wait to show their contempt. They establish. Funi hasn't. Piracy is vastly rampant and they even have legit competition.... yeah. it's definitely not ending well for them. why else would they make their own streaming platform?

Even one piece, the worst 4kids dub, is better than the funimation steins;gate dub.

Tl;dr: They turned a show literally about a bunch of channers shitposting irl so hard that they broke reality into le ebin anime big bang bazinga.

No thanks, if you want a terrible translation, look no further than John Phillips's "translation" of Don Quixote. Only reason why I put translation in quotes is because he raped the book harder than 4kids raped One Piece.

You see this kind of stuff a lot with translations, even, of older English works like Shakespeare or Chaucer (for people who are too lazy to learn to read and understand older works).

Luckily, most professionals now-a-days who work in those industries have come to an understanding that their job isn't to "re-imagine for a modern political audience" these works, but to maintain as much fidelity as possible so that the works can be understood as they were meant to be understood. Unfortunately, given the current modern climate, all it is going to take to upend this is a couple of red-haired parasites to claim someone harassed them at some type of conference to give them an in-road to being in charge of politically infusing to the point of absurdity translating any number of works of literature that are taught to students.

I wonder how tight that helmet is on his skull is that its crushing a few moral brain cells by the thousands~~
