Rome collapsed to a variety of factors not the least of which was a separation of the the food rich western roman empire from the money rich eastern roman empire. As the economy of the western side collapsed Rome ran into a period where a diminishing wealth was held by a small percentage of the population and people began leaving their debts unpaid, the roman military started thinning and became over expanded and Rome started hiring mercenaries that they couldn't pay. This lead to the famous incident of King Odoacer leading the goths into Rome and sacking it in an attempt to recoup unpaid debts by the Roman state. Of course this alone didn't lead to the fall of Rome because empires fall for a large number of reasons, it's never just one thing that does it. If you really think that just one event is what undoes empires then you have a very childlike grasp of the world.

Perhaps your expectations are too high. Ten years must have been a long and arduous process for you, but what if you attempted to manage your fears in bite-sized steps? Maybe instead of saying, "That man is a rape-ape," you could say, "That man is a horn dog," or something. The idea is you don't want your fears to seem larger than yourself.
