I believe in most cases it's only the very exceptional people who use the chew toys, but even they don't use them as much as Tumblr seems to believe. Same for the whole flapping thing. I've seen exceptional people having certain motions they repeated constantly, but it's never in the direction of flapping their hands like a bird.

Gonna "powerlevel" a bit, but admittedly I have a habit of chewing on things like plastic caps and my nails. Still, chewing pendents being flashed around in public just looks super exceptional.

Yeah its super weird. I have severe adhd and know allot of people with autism who 'stim' ( i do myself by constantly moving and shit). I get chewing on caps and nails, as i do that myself, but pendents? Like metal? Or chewable? Those are for toddlers. And arm flapping is often used by low functioning autistic people with the minds of kids. The reason these people have a different educations ( SPED classes) IS that this shit ain't normal and to be glorified.

I actually did know an autist who did the flapping thing, but he was relatively low-functioning and probably has no concept of (or familiarity with) autism advocacy or "autistic rights". Plus he's the only one I've ever met who would regularly hand flap, autistics tend to have weird tics but that's only one example.

I one knew a guy who didn't flap, per se, but he sorta... flicked his hands and snapped his fingers at the same time whenever he got super excited. It's hard to describe. He was the smartest fucker I've ever met (He could solve any math problem you gave him in literal seconds), but seemed socially stunted minus the times when he was around certain friends, and then he would open up. He seemed high-functioning, though.

Not SJW art, but it does remind me of how a lot of Tumblr artists/SJWs in general seem to view any kind of same sex interaction either in real life or in works of fiction. Platonic relationships as good, straight friends do not exist to them, even if it is canon.

They're useful for people who have harmful stims based around the mouth (gritting one's teeth, biting one's knuckles, pica, etc.) in the same way that fidget toys occupy the hands to redirect other harmful stims.

You can't set one foot inside a Tumblr fandom without seeing this shit. No fandom is safe, not a single one.
It's not just the artists. The role play communities are just as bad, if not worse. The only saving grace is half the RPC doesn't shitpost it in art form, but they will shitpost their ~uwu~ headcanons in every tag conceivable.
