Trump Derangement Syndrome - Orange man bad. Read the OP! (ᴛʜɪs ᴛʜʀᴇᴀᴅ ɪs ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴋɪᴡɪ ғᴀʀᴍs ʀᴇᴠɪᴇᴡs ɴᴏᴡ) 🗿🗿🗿🗿

There was a YouTube video explaining this. They mentioned the shut down of social media in Egypt to co trol opposition. Instead of key board warriors the dedicated got off their ass to organize and become very enthusiastic activists.

people are lazy. Uncensored speech allows folks to say their gripe and that the end of it. Prevent the twitter activists from sharing memes and they going to go outside and do some way worse then sharing memes
Raz0rfist just uploaded a video exploring this too.

They are losing users but the users they have are more engaged and active with the app. They are also still somehow profitable; in Q2 which ended last week, Twitter made ~150M. IF they keep this up for about 4 more years, they will have made back the two billion they've burned since their IPO and before they made their first annual profit in 2018.
We talked about this in the star wars thread but you have to remember with investments, it's not about making some flat amount of money back. Rather it's about making that amount PLUS the interest you would gained had you just put that money in a bank. Say the bank was offering 2% annual interest. 2 bil put into that means you would have an extra 40 mil.

So it's not like Twitter making 1 bil means they would break even in 2 years - they'd have to make the 2 bil PLUS the 40 mil in our hypothetical.

In short, twitter is screwed unless there is a major turn around.

(Part of me is wondering if after Trump or during his 3rd term we're going to see the social media & streaming bubble pop.)

Oh I hope so...

I have to wonder if ad-supported content is still viable. In any sense, because I literally don’t browse except with an ad blocker. I’m assuming a lot of people are the same. Basically everyone is mad at places like Twitter because they have to have this milquetoast position of only banning controversial opinions, purely because they don’t want to associate the brands that are their actual revenue source with them, or the brands will leave. You have cases where Gillette or Star Wars loses big chunks of money for woke shit but the online press, the establishment press, the social networks, they all sell ad space to the same corporations and they all want to scrub themselves of anything that harms those brands. That’s largely leading to the ostracizing of non-mainstream left but the woke left is now saying that’s not good enough. How are they going to keep making money?

I don't use adblock but at the same time I don't ever click through links.

So yeah, they're showing me ads but I'm also lowering their engagement rate and making their sites less attractive to advertisers.

You assume too much. It's easy to think that it's common sense to install an adblocker on your browser first thing (if you're not using a browser with it built in), but remember that the vast majority of internet users either don't even know what an extension is (even if their grandkid's explained it to them three times) or browse on their smartphones, likely with the browser it came pre-loaded with. Participating in forums where it's normal to use a non-preloaded browser and load it up with security features makes it easy to forget that until fairly recently Internet Explorer was still chugging right along because old and/or clueless people thought it was The Internet.

Twitter is already losing users every day so they'll probably end up going the way of Myspace post Trump when the country's calmed down again.

Or the political paradigm will shift in the 2020s and the Conservatives will be back to wanting to censor everything like in the 90s.
In the aftermath of this, I wonder how many conservatives getting shut down will lead to wanting to protect free speech versus increasing the desire to turn the table and be the ones holding the boot to the throat.
Then again, "conservative" is a vague term so it probably depends on what kind.

As Jiggly mentioned, not everyone uses adblocker so it's quite likely that social media companies are trying to cater to the clueless users who don't know about it, the same sort of people who probably get swept up in moral panics. With this in mind, ad blocking programs may have destroyed the free internet by rendering its supporters irrelevant in the minds of marketing gurus.

I'm optimistic since conservatives tend towards considering "but what if my opponents get power". It's why all these decisions in the Senate that are allowing Mitch to rawdog the Democrats were things the Democrats had done to themselves.

Obviously both political sides have portions that are authoritarian, it's just one side seems to be more averse to centralized power as a whole than the other.

And yet, they were the ones who made ads so intrusive and obstructive that we needed to block them in the first place.

I wonder if they ever regret that 2005-2010 internets era of terrible spyware/malware/popups that prompted so many people to get script and ad blockers and never stop using them.

I stopped calling myself "conservative" ever since the culture changed to its current state. I don't want to conserve a lot of this Current Year bullshit so I'm radical now.

Granted, I only speak for myself, but who else can, really?

I'd feel better if the Republicans were reversing those decisions. Naturally, not until they'd used them a few times to make the point, but I fear that their delight in their current power will cause them to stop asking that question so much.

Ironic comeuppance knows no political polarity, and hubris has only one known child.

I don't identify as conservative because modern conservatives are fucking idiots that believe conservatism was created by Reagan in the 80s and it's only purpose is to suck off corrupt monopolies instead of doing anything useful to preserve the culture, heritage, and wellbeing of the United States.
