TL;DR Version: The culture warriors wanted Vidya. They wanted to force their identity politics bullshit in and turn gaming into one more tool used to propagandize - they'd already done the same to television and movies, after all, they just needed the last piece of the puzzle. They wanted control, and they decided to pick a fight with the one demographic who was never going to give it to them.
Every bit of idiocy they've done for the last decade has been pushing towards this goal, from the flawed "52% of gamers are women" statistic that got to the statistic it posts by lumping mobile in with every other platform and then using that statistic to argue that the whole of video gaming must change as a consequence, to the journalists crying every single time a game offends their delicate sensibilities, to Feminist Frequency being astroturfed by the major gaming sites at the time (who didn't disclose they were either funding or IRL acquaintances of its staff). Digra repeatedly did research trying to find a way to use the diversity and inclusion angle to get a foothold in video gaming, only to repeatedly learn that gamers as a whole did not give a single solitary fuck about identity politics.
When Quinn got exposed, the reason the various power groups involved in this shit ran to her defense is that she was tied to all of them. Quinn was working with Feminist Frequency when Anita first surfaced back in 2012. She was friends (and friends with benefits) with countless game journalists and indie developers. She literally coasted her way through IGF because that shit is basically run by the same cultural marxist shitheads Quinn pals around with. The problem? In all attempting to cover for her, they let their spaghetti out of their pockets and basically tipped their hand by accident. Had Quinn not been exposed, odds are good a similar shitstorm wouldn't have happened until much later and the fallout for the industry would have been significantly worse.
