I thought I'd go check out what they were saying over on Metafilter, because I knew they'd be completely on the 'Evil GamerGaters! Support Quinn!' movement.

Was not disappointed. Highlights include my new favourite reason to #believewomen - "My answer to the "Innocent until proven guilty" approach is "I'm going to assume that she's innocent of libel until proven guilty. Because that's what you're accusing her of." Because women don't lie! They certainly never spread rumours about people! That's just not what women are about!

Also, claiming Alex Lifschitz had admitted to being abusive - with a link to Zoe's tweet where she says he's done that, to her, in private, that set of circumstances where she always tells the truth - and the usual 'so brave/this isn't nearly enough' stuff. The thread has gone silent rather than deal with the suicide, so there's none of the hot takes that ResetEra has so happily provided us (I want the 'deleting his Twitter is an admission of guilt' guy have to answer for Zoe and The NITW developers deleting theirs, but you just know the person who tries to do that will be permanently banned) - but it's a good indication of what the lefty-but-not-quite-REEEEEra take is on the whole situation.

The thing I find really telling about this whole scenario is alec apologized to her and she apparently even forgave him. It seems like alec had some major pysch problems but he knew he did and was trying to work through them. The fact that she forgave him and then destroyed him suggests to me that this whole thing is entirely out of self interest I wonder if her bank balance was getting a bit low.

Also, I don't think the blame for his suicide is hers- let me be real.

He is, first and foremost, a human being that made his own decision to take his life. At the end of the day, unless there is some sort of determination that he was incapable of controlling his own actions to that extreme degree, that decision was his to make and his to be responsible for. I won't lay one person's choice at the feet of another, because it sets a dangerous precedent. I can no more blame her for that than I can for KF inspiring mass shooters.

I don't think she knew it would have ended with him killing himself, because she's much too stupid to be that Machiavellian. I think she just thought it would destroy him and send him into obscurity forever. I also think he'd probably still be alive, at least for a while if he never sought help, if she hadn't done this. I'm sure a civil case could very well be in order for his surviving family.

I don't doubt she had malicious intent at all, by any means. But I don't think she anticipated a suicide- nor do I believe she truly cared. I think her first reaction was not what normal people would do, and feeling some degree of grief or concern for his friends and family- but rather "damage control" for her to save face.

In this guy's position, and I'm really trying to plant myself there- I think he took his life because a lot of people will believe Quinn, or at least pretend to believe her to stay in her good graces. She's got more than enough support and e-fame to destroy the guy, and who is he? A dude with quite a few enemies already. His life was ruined, especially in the career field where everyone's looking to smear and shame any employer or associate of someone even remotely accused of sexual assault. I think he saw no future for himself, and he had just enough spite in him to think that if he did kill himself- that blame would land on the feet of Zoe.

And I also can't say it'd be a bad thing of quite a few people did hold her responsible. If nothing else, we can at least see the results of these internet witch trials based on false accusations.

Thats something a lot of people seem to forget/ignore a large number of these master manipulator type people do have bad backgrounds at least to some degree, however it doesn't excuse their behavior obviously.

A probably unpopular opinion I have is that Zoe isn't winning. I bet this whole thing is really painful and it being painful is a very small part of what she deserves.
