I think so many people are defending her because they continue to benefit professionally and financially for doing so, which is why they're not going to stop. There's too much money tied up in this nonsense to allow her to go away. Only when the beancounters determine via risk assessment that they stand to lose more than gain for standing by her will her support fall away, and that will come in the form of silence rather than thinkpieces against her, to better shore up their position so they don't appear to be turning in her.

It's not the influence she has, it's the influence given to her by people who gain from her antics. Gaming is now full of people who don't play or make games but just want to make rules about how things are done, and they're paid for that. They're not going to give up such beneficial positions without a fight.
