Community Munchausen's by Internet (Malingerers, Munchies, Spoonies, etc) - Feigning Illnesses for Attention

On today's episode of Adventures of Sarah-Jean...

-Wednesday now, last time she vlogged was Saturday. Sunday to Monday she helped her dad with the antiques, worked 9 hours each day then slept. Tuesday she didn't vlog because she didn't do anything and couldn't think of anything to say.
-She needs to vlog every day or else she'll keep making excuses not to vlog. [Note: She only started daily vlogs after Jaquie died.]
-Has to help EvilDad bring the stuff back from the event. Going to have to lift furniture. Then doing hair and makeup for a maternity shoot. Then has to call her disability lawyer to ask if they can speak to EvilDad instead of her because she doesn't feel like having the phone calls herself. Wowwww.
-Riding home from antique show in the bed of the pickup truck to keep the stuff from flying out. Instead of holding it with both arms, she holds her camera with one.
-"don't mind me. I look like a mess"
-Popped out her left knee and it "stayed out for quite some time." Rested for a long time, made "very little" lunch because she doesn't have lunch food. Now blasting music and setting up her studio. Photo shoot cancelled. Most of her vlog is going to be her doing SFX makeup. Planning to make a makeup channel (she already has an old one but why not?).
-Photo shoot is at a $2.1 million home. She's very excited about this.
-Called two lawyers, waiting to hear back from them. Company is sending her free CBD after she whined about it. She's supposed to keep it a secret and is not telling what brand it is because of that. Health is good, no symptoms except her knee which she used "rubbing stuff" (liniment) and KT tape on.
-Nah, not doing makeup. Doesn't feel like it, wants to enjoy the weather instead because it's turning to Fall weather quickly.
-Sitting on the front porch which has a rail but no gate so the dogs can get off. Can't let gizmo out off leash or he'll run around, cross the street, etc. Freckles doesn't "usually" leave the property.
-her friend is supposed to come over but he hasn't shown up yet. Going out to eat with him. Surprised EvilDad with some soup and tea she made because he felt unwell.
-Drinking OJ and peach schnapps. "Peach schnapps isn't liquor. It's just the stuff you put in liquor to make it taste like peach, but I don't think it has liquor in it. It's like bloody mary mix. You use it for liquor but you don't have to be 21 to buy it. I just like it for the flavoring. But there's no liquor in there." Most schnapps sold in the US is 20% abv. Christ she's stupid.
-clipping her toenails and we are privy to this. Good lord.
-Annoyed it took her friend an hour to get ready to go out.
-Great shot of her double chin as she shoves some nacho-like product into her mouth. Burger and fries. So many digestive issues, though.
-Watching a show about a drug addict and a transgender falling in love.

I’m here because I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole.

I joined disability twitter, and Instagram etc. It’s been really upsetting because what I’m finding is people who love the hospital, compete to see who has the most medications (even though half the pills are OTC and vitamins), and constantly try to one up you. All the twitters profiles with laundry lists of illnesses. Like it’s some kind of fucked up competition.

I’m starting to think one of my Instagram “friends” is a munchie. After their numerous sexy photos with their wheelchair, endless posts about it, I felt something was off. Last week they posted on their Instagram stories that their doctor doesn’t think they need a wheelchair, but they were happy because their therapist told them, if it helps them have an easier life than why not. So you are in a wheelchair but your doctor thinks it’s not needed. Okay?. The constant sexy photos with the medication and wheelchair, oh and doing yoga on the wheelchair. And talking about how they become non verbal after seizures but are posting ENDLESS Instagram stories during their non verbal episode, just has red flags flying.

Can you just post anyone here or do they have to have a substantial following?

EDITED because I missed the vibe of this place, edited to be more what it seems to be.

Update from the hospital

These people are so transparent...

Edited to add:
After getting out of the Er this afternoon (just to remind everyone how she was so weak she needed a wheelchair to get into the Er in the first place) well she walks home and posts a story rant while doing so. Later on she also goes for a shopping trip with two small children to Costco, and she is solo, aka no husband. Now we fast forward to her continuing to rant about the Er visit she was less than happy for. But maybe I've gotten down to the bottom of why this doctor pinned her as a fraud...

Now kids, if you want to be taken seriously by a medical professional, maybe don't dramatically tell them you will die unless you get medical treatment asap.

(sorry there's no receipts of the walking, they were both story videos and I lack a screen recorder)

If her DNA is that messed up, why doesn’t she just get a DNA test. Like if you have genetic disorder it comes up

SO...okay if your “DNA is just that fucked up”....and your doctor thinks you are a “fraud”, shouldn’t getting your genome sequenced solve that problem? Or is she not claiming genetic diseases. Genome sequencing has dropped dramatically in price, and if I was looking for answers that’s what I do. But perhaps, the risk of coming up with no answers isn’t worth the risk...hmm.. Additionally, testing for specific genetic conditions is even cheaper!

She says she already has been diagnosed with everything but doesn't seem to have much of a paper trail to back it up. She only really claims EDS and Chiari as her "genetic flaws" although it's still up on the air about chiari actually being genetic. She has videos for each of the illnesses she claims but she's so boring and whiney to watch I haven't gotten through those videos. She does alot of doctor shopping though. And if you don't personally bring your records to the Er with you, everything is self reported unless it's been added to your file already so sounds like he doesn't believe she has her long list of self reported illnesses which if she had a paper trail she could have brought proof (which would be the smart thing to do if you have several "rare" illnesses that are invisible). Also probably was a red flag to him that she said she would die within months if they didn't treat her, and her tests probably came back only showing mild dehydration. *insert doctor rolling eyes here*

And just out of curiosity, wouldn't it be a big risk to the hospital to tell someone they think they're faking?

Was she told "your tests are all normal" and she just heard "we think you're faking" or is there a chance they actually had someone come in and tell her to cut the shit?

I doubt there's much of a standard practice but how would a hospital/doctor treat a munchie?

If a hospitalist accused a munchie of faking and then got it wrong, then yeah that would be lawsuit-level bad. Sometimes munchies do get sick for real even apart from their self-harm strategies.

There's no real standard of practice for how to deal with FDIOS. There are recommendations (which I won't share since munchies lurk this thread) and some hospitals might have their own policies in place.

The number of psych beds in hospitals has been dropping, so actually helping them is probably off the table. Most hospitalists tend to take a "not my circus, not my monkeys" approach to munchies because they don't have time to deal with them according to the level of care that they really need.

Even if you could wrangle a munchie into a psych referral it's unlikely that they would take it seriously. Being sick is fun and cool!

The schnapps thing--she is such an idiot. Also, she disabled comments hahaha

Sounds like a case manager came in and asked her how she "came up" with all of her illnesses, which means no one came in saying she was faking out right and tried to get her a psych consult but she took it to mean that. Otherwise her tests were probably normal and her vitals stable and she was sent home cause ERs are not for diagnosing or treating chronic illnesses that they know nothing about. They are there to stabilize you in an emergency so you can be seen by your PCP and get a game plan together. If something acute is going on or certain types of flares (sickle cell, etc) you may get admitted for supportive care but hospitals are 90% there for severe acute illness.

Not that I expect anything but lies from most of these people, the story of "they sent someone in to tell me they think I'm faking" has to be bullshit. It doesn't seem like the way hospitals would handle such a person.

Since we all love to project our insecurities on others, my guess is the munchies will interpret "your test results are normal, you are healthy" as "we think you're faking" 9 times out of 8.
... i'm probably just really late to the game on realizing this.

Most people would be happy about that.

There's a long-running joke in the psych community about how patients who want to be in the psych ward don't need to be there and the ones that don't want to be in the psych ward need to be there.

She can type. She can actually talk as well she often goes between being able to talk and being non verbal. She fundrised a lot of money for a speach device, which we saw when she first got it but it hasn't been seen since. As she has either signed, typed or "learnt to talk again". Her alarm is a red cord and not one that is attached to her.
Does bee claim Ed’s?
She claims hypermobility, a mystery degenerative neurological disease and god knows how many other issues. She seems so have every issue you can think of.

This is some of what she claims. She has since making the video she has claimed more and changed her diagnosis.
