This right here homes in on a core issue.
Furries cannot address the intrinsic problems of the fandom and medium, if you can call it that: the unacceptable individuals, paraphilias, and obsessions that it, by nature of it's content, attracts.
The core of the fandom is anthropomorphic fantasy. The origin of the fandom is an offshoot of the sci-fi/Star Trek fandom that obsessed over animal anthromorphic characters. Without a singular focus, like produced anime or video games, you end up with a loose definition, a fandom with no gate to keep. Bringing it back to fantasy, you then have the problem of any garden variety degenerate, the kind of person who prioritizes fantasy fetish over any kind of real life personal accountability, being attracted to the fandom not because of the idea of anthropomorphism not as a theme, but as a paint job over a bunch of stupid fetishist bullshit.
Bringing this back to your point about "yeah we allow dogfuckers...right side of history" then you have people who will attach any kind of lofty discourse, the kind that gets traction as "progressive and ethical" to things that are at least pointlessly fantastical and at worst destructively abusive to ones self or others.
Look, just like my icon, I'm about four drinks in. What i'm trying to get at is that furry is empty. It's a surface paint job for any internet loser to attach their stupid fantasy fetishes to and then discourse about how every single whim they have is justified. The addition of performatively woke potlitics is just a symptom of how bad things are for people right now. But at it's core, furry is just a vehicle for whatever people want it to be. It's a fucking shame that it attracts mostly aimless degenerate fetishists.
I'm not apologizing for sperging out about this. Most of us here are burned out on the fandom for one reason or another.

Yes they can. They just don't want to because either:
a) They're just as guilty as the next dog-fucker, or
b) Their self-selected idols ("popufurs") are afraid to shine a light on all the bad shit that's happening, so they follow suit and avoid rocking the boat
Basically, the problem is that furries are either sheep in wolves' clothing, or the farmer that rapes and murders wolves and sheeps alike. Nobody of consequence wants to change anything. If someone does try to change something, they get drowned out by a lot of people in column A and ignored by the people in column B so nothing fucking happens.
Some of them will inevitably get mentioned here on the farms because, frankly, a lot of the exceptional individuals who sperg out about the fandom cannot tell a lolcow from a hole in the ground.
