So what can a doctor reasonably say to these people? The bitter Twitter crowd just wants a smile and a nod and a quick-fix Rx. Can a regular GP realistically do anything for a noncompliant like J? Hell, there's even some real confusion and a lot of guesswork about how to dose antimicrobial drugs in morbidly obese patients; obesity confounds treatment in so many ways. If a patient comes in with an obvious obesity-related condition, a competent, ethical doctor can't just look the other way.

I'm mostly pissed that a lot of this shit is going to inevitably filter down to kids. Telling adolescents that they are not the problem and the world is at fault is like crack to them.

The TODAY study is...not promising. It was done on people aged 10-17 who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and tried to find the best technique to manage it. The more interesting part of the study is that they started doing follow-ups because we didn't really have a whole lot of data on what happens to people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at an early age.

So it was started in 2004 and half those kids have signs of diabetic retinopathy now. Plenty of other complications are showing up at slightly lower rates. This would essentially be in-line with adult progression of the disease, which means that they're likely gunning for a hospital bed or the grave in their 30s. Their youth does not appear to be saving them.

Kids shouldn't be subjected to that. This movement is dangerous.
