Articles & Happening Meta Discussion

Articles & Happenings is the third attempt at a news board on the Kiwi Farms. It is a cursed place. Every moderator who has been assigned here has resigned within a year. During 2016, the political crossfire was so bad it spread to different boards and culminated in me banning American news discussion entirely for several months. It has been deleted in its entirety twice. There is no actual discussion here, it's people posting garbage. It leans much further right than the rest of the site and doesn't particularly conduct discussion because dissenting opinions are dogpiled by a thousand memelords posting shit they read on /pol/ without any critical analysis.

The only rules that can be enforced are empirical ones with boolean violation answers. New threads must cite a real source directly and must use the headline of the article as a thread title without any editorializing. Articles must be archived in some way and must link to the original article. Replies that are one word or a reaction images are automatic one-month bans from the board.

I'm creating this now because it seems like this place is here to stay and is one of the largest areas of the entire site. I might as well throw in bare minimum effort to improve it. I don't even try to find mods for here because they will quit, without exception. I've added new prefixes ("Business" and "Crime") just now.

Discuss.

New threads should be made like this.

A&H posts make up the lion's share of the posts shared in the cringiest posts thread. Users who have massive spergouts are often those who post in A&H most. When we have people complaining about "oppressive jannies deleting their posts" its typically someone who was being a sped in A&H. We even had a user who was an A&H regular who would make TTS posts for other users, unilaterally, without any request at all to do so for them, just because they felt staff was encumbering the user's "free speech".

A&H just feels like a board for people to post who have a case of the angries. If you don't see the hugbox circlejerk, then that's probably because you're a part of it.

I've always considered the relative dumpster-fire aesthetic of A&H to be a feature, not a bug. I don't even know if it's possible to "fix" A&H and that's kind of the appeal. News and politics has turned into an autistic cage match on every possible outlet, so that's not unique to the Farms. The trick that people ought to learn is to just pass over opinions that irk them and learn when it's no longer productive to keep reply-chaining each other because you're really not apt to change anyone's mind at this point.

Some people are firmly rooted in Left-leaning ideology and some people are firmly rooted in Right-leaning ones. I'd actually enjoy seeing more Left-leaning topics broached into A&H, but it feels as though whenever it happens it's coming from a user who's gone so far left that they're dragging whole-ass Communism into the discussion rather than something more moderate,. The problem with that right now is that it's incredibly, frustratingly difficult to find moderate, Left-leaning journalism that would constitute as a viable source, since most mainstream outlets have worked overtime to purge out their moderates and relegated them to posting on blogs or on YouTube videos.

Though, you'd see the same "dog-piling" result if a user came in here repeatedly, unironically posting vaguely-sourced threads about how Africans are born retarded and exist only to rape because some self-proclaimed trailer scientist in Kentucky said so. That opinion wouldn't find too much unironic agreement on the board.

I like A&H in as much as it features news and events that I don't get from my usual sources. It's a genuinely useful resource in that regard and I check it regularly. BUT - I only read the articles, I never bother much with the comments because I know what they're going to be like and I don't have the time to read "lol I hate niggers" over and over until my brain rots.

A large proportion of posters here (both regular and driveby) are /pol/ spergs that make the site look even worse than it already does, and they seldom contribute very much in terms of debate or thought to offset that ("lol kill all the degenerates now" does not achieve anything other than making you look like a tard). If KF has a reputation elsewhere for being full of the "Alt-Right" or "Nazis", then I don't think A&H is the cause, but it's not fucking helping.

On the other hand, it is a containment area for the worst posters, mostly keeping them out of Deep Thots (though not enough imo, there's several threads there I avoid because I can't be bothered to argue with Kekistan chucklefucks). Deleting it isn't the answer, and it seems that moderation doesn't work because nobody wants to tard-herd for no money, which I understand. Maybe just start handing out bans for anyone who annoys you until they stop?

I think a lot of what A&H does is defusal. It generally gives kiwis who are interested in the news a pretty free form place for people to have silly arguments over shit most of us barely have an effect on, like politics, without it spilling out into other boards or silliness. 99% of the time people are arguing politics and that's not really ever going to start any major issues with the majority of kiwi users because they can at least act grown up as a whole.

The thing that personally makes me not want to read A&H is how repetitive most threads become after a while, we were 50 pages in the Epstein suicide thread and people were still making the same "shot himself in the back of the head" joke for the 30th time
this happens everywhere

if you read for example the reddit tranny general thread you will often see the exact same discussions repeat every few weeks or months, with the exact same takes posted over and over again, sometimes even by the exact same posters

HEY GUYS, 40% LULZ!!!!!

It frankly seems to me that too many people are caring about negative ratings.

Nothing is actually, physically stopping someone for having a discussion. It's just that oftentimes at least one of the left vs. right side is absolutely bugfuck insane.

Often that side includes, say, Ashy the Angel. Other times the other side includes some straight up racial destiny fellows like Saint Mengele. Mengele got dogpiled just like Ashy did, and nobody had a problem with that.

It feels like at least half of the discontent is political animus at which "side" is more numerous, and I suspect that if the sides were flipped the complaints, if extant, would take on a significantly different character.

I like A&H, it's a good place to hang out once you've caught up on all of the cow news of the day and a lot of the jokes are refreshing because a lot of the "serious" political sites consider that idea blasphemous. Additionally, it's a pretty good place for discussions on news stories that the typical media tries to bury (Islamic Terrorism, Shootings committed by minorities/white democrats, crimes committed by illegal immigrants).

If you were to try and "fix" AH, you could probably break it into a serious area and a shitposting area, but I think it's fine as is.

I've added new prefixes ("Business" and "Crime") just now.
You probably could have made that into just one prefix.

@CatParty is an absolute curse on this board and this site, and is responsible for 90% of your A&H pain. He does not eat, sleep, and will not stop until you are inundated with non-news about trannies in lefty thinkpieces.

User #25 indeed.
The way this subforum responds to CatParty's threads (and his many imitators) is why the biggest way Null could improve this place is to start banning people who angrily seriouspost at him.

What if you separate political discussion into a separate forum entirely and have A&H be for non-political news

All that will do is lead to mudslinging over what qualifies as political news.

For example, in other places where such rules are supposed to be enforced, I often see questions like "is complaining about {INSERT FIGURE HERE} political" and so forth, and mods selectively allowing it depending on whether they find the complaint correct.

When Null can't find a mod willing to stick around, we can easily see the same thing happen.

I have posted on A&H a few times and have never been dogpiled once. I just had a lot of people disagreeing with me when I said that RBG should retire but that's to be expected. I am honestly surprised to learn there's so much dogpiling going on. Even in the AOC thread where you would expect it to be one gigantic shitshow things were relatively civil. I read some really good takes from both staunch opponents and people who once agreed and supported her but had become disaffected. My impression from following that thread was that people had articulated positions, it was nothing like /pol I also like @CatParty's contributions, they post some really interesting articles that would've otherwise completely escaped me.
