People who can lose their job tomorrow at the drop of a hat tend to work harder. We often use to hire people for a year or two on contract and then make them permanent. It's easy to let them go on contract. When they're hired it's almost an act of God to get them out. Even the most productive workholics ones invariably develop a drop in productivity almost instantly when made permanent.
