Desmond is 12, so puberty should've already started.

It isn't too unusual for it to start a little later, I've known a few people who didn't notice anything until 14; I think they were all significantly underweight, same as Desmond.

It's really hard to believe he's 12; maybe he is actually malnourished or drugged all the time, there is definitely something very wrong (besides the obvious fagging out by wendy).

He's undoubtedly not gay, you don't figure this shit out prior to puberty, and even then most people don't figure it out until their later teens. I knew in 5th grade, so 11-12ish. But that brings up something else.

If 4% of the population is gay or bi, that means in a school of 400, there are seven potential dates for a gay boy (4% of 400, minus 50 percent for girls and minus 1 for himself) versus 192 for straight boys. Nobody wants to talk about it because "muh homophobia!" and it would require feminists acknowledging boys can be victims of predatory behavior, but such a small dating pool means that hyper-hormonal gay teens are easier pickings for overaged creeps. It's important that gay kids are not isolated from their peers during this time, because they need a healthy frame of reference for what relationships should look like.

Desmond is already extremely isolated ftom his peers who could give him a reality check If he does turn out gay, he is 100% guaranteed to be abused, and rationalize it as normal because nobody around him will say it's not.

Yeah I mean it's also normal for all kids to feel more emotionally close to the same sex at that age. It would take an overeager adult (or a playground bully) to turn that into "lol totes gay." Nine year olds may have some inkling of being "different" but precisely what kind of "different" is not going to be obvious until they are physically equipped for sexual attraction. Most of the "I knew when I was 7" stories are either retcon or abuse victims or some of both.

Well, my cousin and I used to have crushes on various celebrities when we were kids, so I guess if you can know you're straight when you're a kid, I'm sure it's possible to know you're gay. It was basically law that kids had crushes on those people in the late '70s/early '80s. Also, I think sometimes "crushes" are just reactions to idealized versions of people we wish we could emulate.

I'm a chick and pre-puberty, probably starting at like 6-7 years old, I only ever had crushes on men. I was constantly smitten with dudes ranging on the spectrum of Kel Mitchell to Taylor Hanson, and a variety of fictional characters that I'm way too embarrassed to admit here or anywhere as an adult. But the point there is that as a kid, even before I knew anything about sex and sexuality (I knew about penises and vaginas but only had vague ideas about actual sexual intercourse--I think it's worth it to note I was never abused in any way as a child), I was attracted to men. When I hit puberty I started getting crushes on women and it was incredibly confusing and terrifying. Not because of what my family or society would think or whatever but because I was so used to being "in love" or "attracted" to guys. I won't get too into it since I'm already sperging enough but around this same time I also went through phases which would be considered "gender dysphoria" now and as well as asexuality, which I think now could be explained by simply being utterly confused and terrified because of my burgeoning hormones. I also thought I was bisexual for a large part of my teens and adult years until I actually had sex with a woman and I was like, yeah no I'm not into this.

That's why I think this sort of I knew when I was 2 years old!!! bullshit like Desmond or Jazz Jennings is either fake as fuck, or incredibly rare (outside of children who were abused and exposed to sex at a young age) at the very least, because until I started becoming an actual person with my own thoughts and feelings, not just a child, I had no real concept of sex, sexuality, boys, girls, everyone was just little kids, big kids, and adults to me. And I'm perfectly fine with my gender and sexuality as an adult now despite the terror and confusion I went through when I was younger.
