It's called Culturalization. It's like Localization, except you change the content to match the culture of the target intended audience, while keeping the overreaching work's meaning. For example, changing references to Shinto to something more religiously generic (or outright Christianity), or changing references to Golden Week. This is why, for example, in old RPGs you might see Crosses replaced with stars, or Buddhist Swastikas removed.
That's when it's done "properly."
Except, Neo-Marxists have their hands in all this shit, so there's a different version, when you change shit to match the culture
you want to indoctrinate people to adopt, because they can't put people in reeducation camps and gulags for wrongthink yet, so instead they take the stance that your hobbies and interest determine what you are, and thus if they can "fix" your hobbies and interests, they can fix YOU, indirectly. Or at least, fix your kids.
This was one of the things behind GamerGate, the "Gamers Are Dead" stuff. It's been a few years and I barely remember it, but basically, some Neo-Marxist "academic," Adrienne Shaw from DiGRA, did a study on gaming and identity politics, and discovered that gamers are HEAVILY meritocratic and won't buy into identity politics, and thus there's no fuckign way to force them to want to give bonus points to a player because she has a cunt, or to accept faster dungeon queues for players with brown skin, or what have you. Ergo, because gamers won't accept IdPol, the gamer "identity" has to be subverted and destroyed.
Worse, she took the same research and found the EXACT OPPOSITE conclusions in two different papers. Because she's a "feminist academic" and fuck your logic and reasoning and ethics and shit, she has politics to push.
Sargon did a video on it here, which is actually damn near impossible to find (for a while, Youtube would NOT give it out on search results, even still it's now nearly a full page down in the search results):
