Does a custodian witness have to attend? Or can they just send the documents? Personally I'd advise against attending unless legally compelled to do so. Otherwise, you might get Bill Clintoned - trapped by giving inconsistent testimony on a matter unrelated to the matter being investigated.

If you're legally compelled to attend then you need to lawyer the fuck up and be very careful not to fall into this trap.

My bet for what happened is German fed police or Interpol came to the US with vageuely credible information that there were more people in communication with the guy and they potentially planned to do similar things, potentially in the US. The FBI doesn't have a lot of info to go on, but with 8chan down there aren't too many other places to post pdfs and such on the open web, so they use google or some other tech firm to crawl for everywhere the pdfs were posted and basically cast a gigantic net, sending subpoenas to all of them on the hope that at least one will return useful information.

I'd bet this is a copy and paste subpoena mostly written by a bot and probably checked briefly by only one or two actual humans among dozens or hundreds of similar subpoenas.

Josh is also dead correct that the US government has basically an unlimited reach. If you want to stay connected to the internet, they will find you, and if you go completely off the grid and vanish in Alaska or Siberia like dozens of people do every year, then they won't find you but you may as well be dead. If the site is ever shut down it won't be through a court order or anything that blatantly countermands the 1st (And josh is again correct that there is no where else in the world you could host an open, non dark-web site that is more open), it would be TDS style where they make it literally impossible to find a payment processor, an internet connection, etc.

Also mildly related but i was under the impression josh was living in Russia because it's cheaper, not because of extradition or freedom or anything like that.
