Didn't Jazz Jennings do the exact same thing as this kid? Take the same path?
Don't many kids in America?
So why is this case so notable?
No single judge is going to completely change the status quo on this issue, so what was the father expecting? The judge to tell the kid you can't switch gender roles and have to go to conversion therapy or live with the father who enforce unwanted masculinity on the kid? That was never going to happen.
All I see is idealogues, Zach and Matt whats his name interfering with the private family matters of complete strangers for political gains. Its one thing to observe and make comment on whats become a public story, but to try and "save" the kid one way or the other when it's not your fucking kid and you're just using this to push a partisan agenda, is kind of sickening tbh. If the father wants to take it further and appeal, thats his business. But when did people's private family lives become such a goddamn circus. Zact chose to be a public figure. This kid did not.
1. jazz jennings is sterile, has no libido, and is facing multiple revisions for their genital surgery. All kids who have cross sex hormones after puberty blockers are sterilized.
2. sterilizing people without complete informed consent (see: adults of sound mind deciding for themselves) is seen as such an egregious human rights abuse that you can't even get a severely mentally handicapped person sterilized (to prevent pregnancy in case of sexual abuse, for example). Caregivers for the exceptional are frustrated by these laws because there is a high rate of sexual abuse, and some of them are exceptional due to genetic problems that could be passed on.
3. This case is notable because both parents disagree about what to do and sterility is permanent
4. The judge in family court has more freedom than you imagine to order what they want
5. the governor, state senators, and federal senators are now in the process of drafting legislation to make it illegal to sterilize minors via blockers + cross sex hormones in response to this case
6. this case is also notable because normal people had no idea this was going on. parents that medically transition their children tend to hide the part about sterility. The book "I Am Jazz" doesn't say a god damn thing about any of this.
There is now a gag order on the parties so they can't discuss the case. If it was not this case it would be another one, since people get divorced and disagree about medical treatment all the time.
This shouldn't be allowed to happen at all, I am saying this from a medical perspective rather than a partisan political one. IMO the main reason this has happened is that gender therapists don't understand the level of liability they are assuming when they refer kids out for medical transition. Doctors rely on them heavily to refer properly screened patients, but some state laws and most treatment guidelines say that they are only allowed to affirm a stated gender identity, so it works more like a conveyor belt than a screening system.
