It's probably been said before, but best case, and most likely, scenario is someone associated with him is already prepared to call Adult Protective Services on him, maybe even before Barb croaks. He becomes a ward of the state and gets put into a group home, or supervised apartment. I've seen plenty of speds and autists in group homes that were less divorced from reality than Chris. They'll try to dump him off on any possible family first, but the tugboat means he's already in the system. And in that case the smaller the town or more rural and gentrified the area the better. Crazies don't fall through the cracks quite as bad in small towns. The shrinks might not be there, but the group housing is.
