Also, almost every one of Nyk's videos is monetized nowadays. I think the only ones that aren't are videos like Degeneracy that are behind an agewall but I could be wrong on that. That's right, the Patreon millions weren't enough for Nyk, he had to put advertisements on all his videos. Even the pre-HRT ones are now monetized last time I checked. It doesn't matter which pre-HRT video I look up, there's an ad at the beginning.

@Nykysnottrans It seems that a huge portion of Poppy's fanbase is trans. Or rather, many of the trans women I know IRL are longtime and avid fans of Poppy. I used to think it was coincidence, but I do have to wonder- what is it about Poppy that seems to position her as such an icon to trans women?

The obvious answer would be "UwU cute n girly but also CrEePy", but I'm wondering if it goes deeper than that. Much of Poppy's aesthetic, and early work especially, invoked brainwashing techniques and imagery, as well as overt visual references to the occult. I'm not sure if she's "goals" so much as a figurehead for some sort of longing for leadership, direction and devotion to an ideology.

Maybe this is just stupid spitballing, but it is something that I have wondered about. You seem like you have a fair bit of firsthand experience with the community, as I do, so I would be curious if you have any thoughts on the matter.

At least initially, Poppy was presented as...surreal, I guess? More real than real, anyway. It's never explicitly said that she's an android, but that's clearly the vibe they were going for. The videos leaned heavily into the "uncanny valley" territory, where she tried really, really hard to convince you she was just an ordinary girl, but clearly had more going on beyond that. Then, as you move into the Charlotte videos, you see a clearly fake woman who's jealous of Poppy for being popular and pretty and, well, a real girl. Or at least someone who can pass as a real girl.

I could see the how that would have interest for trans women.

OK, let's talk about this and why transwomen are stanning Poppy.

I personally began suspecting that Nyk was ripping off Poppy when I first saw the Interweb music video back in the summer of 2017. I knew Nyk was into Synthwave and the associated Outrun aesthetic because he was using the (licence free) music of HOME (like this song Dusk, and this song Before The Night, and of course Sun, Nyk was using them all the time because he was still poor and couldn't afford to use licensed music) in his videos and during Livestreams. I don't know if Nyk started flooding everything in "bisexual lighting" after developing a crush on Poppy but it was pretty clear he wanted to go for that Outrun look. I joked at the time and said that rather than being Poppy, Nyk was more like Titanic Sinclair if Sinclair suffered an episode of ROGD and decided to become Poppy himself. Little did I know that it would all lead to Nyk actually coming a Poppy clone.

With trans poppy fans it's important to ask: Are they HSTSs or AGPs? With Poppy's HSTS fans I don't necessarily think that Poppy is #transition_goals but rather that the music is their generation's gay disco and she's a pop icon with a sense of mystery or otherworldliness, kind of like this generation's Lady Gaga or David Bowie. I mean, that song Beach Blonde Baby is pretty classic gay disco and is actually a catchy pop song, take it in your time machine and go back 4 decades and it would sit right under or over Madonna's Material Girl on the charts. For the more OCD ones amongst these HSTS, I suspect they sincerely like the neat, clean, "art gallery white cube" aesthetic of these videos, at least the art school art fags amonst those HSTSs surely must. Titanic Sinclair said he was inspired by Andy Warhol. Warhol was a gay man who was fascinated by beautiful women, transsexuals and the idea of artificiality (I am sure contemporary egg hatchers would say Andy himself was an egg), I think those are enduring fascinations with many of them. They probably don't perceive that sterility as "creepy" but rather as calming and uncomplicated, like Nordic minimalism but with a human being.

I suppose you're referring to all the conspiracy theory stuff about poppy.church and putting secret messages and symbolism in the videos and promotional media? I am aware of that and I think Poppy fans just love to go on those online scavanger hunts for clues. It allows them to obsess over their pop idol in a fun way. But of course this inevitably lead to these fans discovering Mars Argo, which was an unintended consequence. We were discussing the commodity fetish earlier in this thread while talking about Oliver Lennard's misuse of that term. You could say that kids looking into poppy.church and discovering Mars Argo instead was the moment the magic of the commodity fetish was shattered. You could also say that this is exactly what Kiwi Farms is doing with all these threads about these narcissistic Youtube celebrities, shattering the magic of their Youtube commodity fetishism. All these SJW leftists and Marxists should be celebrating Kiwi Farms for doing that, but instead they want to shut down the forum, the hypocrites.

With the older transitioners I am pretty sure their interest in Poppy is more dark and I tend more towards them being into the faux-Japanese kimo-kawaii/yami-kawaii/creepy cute appropriation. Titanic Sinclair is a very serious case of a hipster with yellow fever, he's been to Japan many times looking for ideas to steal from Japanese urban culture and pop culture. I am pretty sure Sinclair just wanted to come up with a Western version of Japanese "creepy cute" when he conceived of the Poppy project:

The whole Poppy thing, musically, cinematically, aesthetically, is essentially Sinclair's project, Poppy is just an actress/session artist expressing Sinclair's artistic ideas, I don't even know how much if any input she has. Sinclair cloned his ex-girlfriend Mars Argo in Poppy because he clearly views women as replaceable multiples (there's a Hitchcock movie you can go and watch about this kind of mental illness). Also, look at Poppy's body, she has no tits and no ass, she looks almost anorexic/skeletal and has huge eyes like a prepubescent child. She looks like a stereotypical starving ballerina. Not exactly #transition_goals for all these older transwomen who want visible T&A. I think Nyk is more likely to be in this category, we already know Nyk that Nyk loves the famous book by Nabokov and we also know that Nyk likes ballerinas because of his obsession with Natalie Portman in the movie Black Swan. Poppy was certainly Nyk's kind of girl (petite brunette) before she subjected herself to Sinclair's vision. Since Nyk can't have Poppy, Nyk became Poppy.

Honestly, I feel the same. I'm trying to find the official magazine cover to see if there's a difference. It's just bizarre, since it is so obviously out of place with the rest of the typeface. Also, seems too convenient that it runs parallel to the edge of the arm?

Everything about it says facetune, but I agree it seems too egregious. I'm more than a bit mystified.

Well, I do know Nyk was acting (pretending to be?) dysphoric about his arms when he began the LARP. It's one of those things about his body that he can't change unless he goes full Eugenia Cooney anorexic, but that would explain why he would place his arm partially behind his back to highlight his moobs instead in that Salty cover shot. It's even possible that his idiot photographer Signe Pierce asked him to "turn this way" in order to hide the man arms.

I remember after he was on internet HRT for about 1-2 months, Nyk posted a picture on Twitter of himself flexing his biceps, but when a fan complimented Nyk on his toned arms, Nyk threatened to punch that fan in a tweet. I can't find the exchange on Twitter anymore, I guess Nyk deleted it to cover up the fact that he really did threaten to punch a fan for complimenting him on his arms, which was a rare instance where Nyk exposed his own capacity for meaningless violence despite pretending to be femme and harmless. Nyk said on one of the Livestreams that he later deleted that he was in his school's rowing team so he had toned upper arms from rowing - oh yeah, and BTW, what Nyk said in the AGP video about how he was supposedly never into sports? He was into rowing. FYI, rowing is a sport. That was yet another instance where Nyk lied and covered up his past to make his trans-LARP seem more credible. It's ridiculous really because on the other hand he goes out of his way to defend trans athletes, while at the same time denying and even covering up his own past involvement in at least some form of athletics.

Anyway, Nyk said at the time that he didn't want to have muscular arms but femme spaghetti arms. This means there's definitely the motivation there to Photoshop the crap out of those pictures.
