To be honest, much of the hostility directed at Traviss's writing from a characterization perspective seems more the result of autistic nerd-rage over the fact that she depicted her Jedi characters as being less-than-perfect at everything than any particular hyper-competence on the part of her Mandos, which is stupid for a number of reasons, not least of which is A: that the EU had been portraying Boba Fett and other Mandalorians as one-man armies who could single-handedly wipe out entire Imperial garrisons for ages before she ever got hired on to write SW fiction, and B: the Clone Wars was by design a conflict designed to fuck up every normal instinct that the Jedi had and put them at a permanent disadvantage, where by contrast the Mandalorians were in their element in the same situation.I really........really.....genuinely fucking hate to say this but....back in the day one of the only positive things people said about Karen Traviss was that she was competent at writing the lines/characterisations of soldiers and military people due to the fact she served in some capacity and had a family history in the military or some shit, even if she wrote everyone else to be drooling fucktards and wrote about the "bigger picture" of various wars with less skill than your average Wehrboo with a Guderian bodypillow*
Honestly this is one thing even the absolute most abject fucking reprobates of the old EU and old Fandom had. They actually genuinely got invested in some specific part of the mythos that appealed to them, even if they did it at the expense of everything else, be it ultra mandalorians or new mary sue jedi or waifu shotacon sith or S&M aliens....atleast they cared about the autistic shit they spewed
I never really quite figured out why she chose that particular hill to die upon, so to speak. Still, the amount of salt that the Minimalist-vs-Maximalist inspired on a daily basis was pretty funny to watch at the time.* To use one infamous example, she was absolutely fanatical for some autistic reason about insisting in her work that the Clone Wars were smaller in scale and involved fewer soldiers than the Eastern Front of WW2 despite.....ya know....being galaxy level conflicts
