Yesterday felt like a few days wrapped into one. I went to my grandma's funeral. It was nice to remember her with my family. Then I went to the reception and got to talk a lot with family members I hadn't seen in a while. Then I went out to dinner with my mom and her foster kids.
After that I headed to
@denverfilmsociety for
@girlflu, an awesome film by
@dorieb. I don't Instagram about movies much -- usually that's Twitter. But Girl Flu resonated with me in an Instagram way.
Girl Flu is about Bird, a 12-year-old girl in Los Angeles who is having her first period. She has a strained relationship with her 30-year-old mom, who seems reluctant to leave her own youth and freedom behind. The girl and mom both have love interests, but are kind of afraid of taking the next step.
I like the way Girl Flu deals with the topic of menstruation. It's a rite of passage, in my opinion, more real than anything a guy will experience. And it's treated with humor and honesty. I also like the way Girl Flu treats youth sexuality in an honest way.
I think the
#barbie love scene at the beginning of Girl Flu might make my Insta-friend
@strangelovecraft smile.
I love the way Girl Flu deals with relationships. I empathize with the relationship between Bird and her mother. Neither Bird nor her mom is perfect, and they learn to be more patient with each other. But almost every character in the film has real relationships. That's some impressive writing, when you have a simple plot and theme with complex characters and relationships. And I think that brings up probably my favorite element of the film, which is that essentially an entire community of friends comes together to support Bird -- and her mom, really.
The film has some cool magical elements, like the period ritual, and just some of the basic aspects of the cinematography in general. The acting is also great.
@jadepettyjohn_official is great. I also loved
@therealkateesackhoff,
@sistosistosisto, &
@josefdiego.
Today's a sad day, too. My sister's boyfriend passed away. I'm heading with my sister to his memorial service.
