  • Virginia House Del. Ibraheem Samirah introduced a bill that would override local zoning officials to permit multi-family housing in every neighborhood, changing the character of quiet suburbs.
  • Oregon passed a similar bill, following moves by cities such as Minneapolis; Austin, Texas; and Seattle.
  • Proponents say urban lifestyles are better for the environment and that suburbs are bastions of racial segregation.
Democrats in Virginia may override local zoning to bring high-density housing, including public housing, to every neighborhood statewide — whether residents want it or not.

The measure could quickly transform the suburban lifestyle enjoyed by millions, permitting duplexes to be built on suburban lots in neighborhoods previously consisting of quiet streets and open green spaces. Proponents of “upzoning” say the changes are necessary because suburbs are bastions of segregation and elitism, as well as bad for the environment.

The move, which aims to provide “affordable housing,” might be fiercely opposed by local officials throughout the state, who have deliberately created and preserved neighborhoods with particular character — some dense and walkable, others semi-rural and private — to accommodate people’s various preferences.

But Democrats tout a state-level law’s ability to replace “not in my backyard” with “yes, in your backyard.”

House Delegate Ibraheem Samirah, a Democrat, introduced six housing measures Dec. 19, coinciding with Democrats’ takeover of the state legislature in November.

“Single-family housing zones would become two-zoned,” Samirah told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Areas that would be impacted most would be the suburbs that have not done their part in helping out.”

“The real issues are the areas in between very dense areas which are single-family zoned. Those are the areas that the state is having significant trouble dealing with. They’re living in a bubble,” he said.

He said suburbs were “mostly white and wealthy” and that their local officials — who have historically been in charge of zoning — were ignoring the desires of poor people, who did not have time to lobby them to increase suburban density.

In response to a question about whether people who bought homes in spacious suburbs have valid reasons, not based on discrimination, for preferring to live that way — including a love for nature and desire to preserve woods and streams — he said: “Caring about nature is very important, but the more dense a neighborhood is, the more energy efficient it is.”

He said if local officials seek to change requirements like setbacks to make it impossible to build dense housing in areas zoned to preserve a nature feel, “if they make setbacks to block duplexes, there’d have to be a lawsuit to resolve whether those zoning provisions were necessary.”

He wrote on Facebook, “Because middle housing is what’s most affordable for low-income people and people of color, banning that housing in well-off neighborhoods chalks up to modern-day redlining, locking folks out of areas with better access to schools, jobs, transit, and other services and amenities.”

“I will certainly get pushback for this. Some will call it ‘state overreach.’ Some will express anxiety about neighborhood change. Some may even say that the supply issue doesn’t exist. But the research is clear: zoning is a barrier to more housing and integrated communities,” he continued.

He tweeted Sunday that that would include public housing. “Important Q about new social/public housing programs: where are we going to put the units? Under current zoning, new low-income housing is relegated to underinvested neighborhoods, concentrating poverty more. Ending exclusionary zoning has to be part of broader housing reform,” he said.

Tim Hannigan, chairman of the Fairfax County Republican Committee — in one of the areas Samirah represents — said that urban Democrats were waging war on the suburbs. “This could completely change the character of suburban residential life, because of the urbanization that would develop,” he told the DCNF. “So much of the American dream is built upon this idea of finding a nice quiet place to raise your family, and that is under assault.”

“This is a power-grab to take away the ability of local communities to establish their own zoning practices … literally trying to change the character of our communities,” he said.

He said suburbs were not equipped to handle the increased traffic, and “inevitably it will just push people to places where they feel they’ll get away from that, they may move to West Virginia to get their little plot of land.”

Minneapolis became the first city to eliminated single family zoning in December 2018, after a push by progressive advocacy groups promoting “equity.” Austin, Texas, and Seattle soon followed suit.

But those cities were amending zoning codes that have always been the domain of local governments. Oregon passed state legislation blocking local governments’ single-family zoning in July, CityLab reported.

It quoted Alex Baca, a Washington, D.C., urbanist with the site Greater Greater Washington, saying that single-family zoning is a tool for wealthy whites to maintain segregated neighborhoods and that the abolition of low-density neighborhoods is necessary for equity.

CityLab acknowledged that “residents might reasonably desire to keep the neighborhoods they love the way they are,” but said that implementing the law at the state level makes sure that those concerns can be more easily ignored.

“By preempting the ability of local governments to set their own restrictive zoning policies, the state policy would circumnavigate the complaints of local NIMBY homeowners who want to block denser housing,” it wrote. While he implied that suburbs are prejudiced, Samirah himself has a history of anti-Semitic comments, including saying sending money to Israel is worse than funding the Klu Klux Klan.

“I am so sorry that my ill-chosen words added to the pain of the Jewish community, and I seek your understanding and compassion as I prove to you our common humanity,” he said in February.

He interrupted a speech in July by President Donald Trump in Jamestown, Virginia, and said, “You can’t send us back! Virginia is our home.”

His father is Jordanian refugee Sabri Samirah, who authorities banned from the U.S. for a decade after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, in part because of his membership in the Muslim Brotherhood, the Chicago Tribune reported in 2014.

In 1861, West Virginia seceded from Virginia, because they wanted nothing to do with Richmond's bullshit. Now you have counties, predominantly in the western parts of the state, looking to do the samn damn thing.

I guess Kentucky and West Virginia are going to welcome a few more counties at this rate.
At this point just kick out Loudon, Prince William and Fairfax counties and then have the rest of the State rejoin with West Virginia.
The NOVA cunts can then fuck off and join Maryland if they want to be Blue State faggots this badly.

I'm pretty sure they seceded from Virginia because a Union military commander said they did.

Anyways, counterpoint for people who hate this: people should have the right to build what they want on their own land. Fuck neighborhood commissions. NoVa is so built up its in danger of becoming another San Francisco and it doesn't even have the excuse of being surrounded by water on three sides.

There are other tools that people in decent communities could use to maintain their property. Do y’all really want some of that smoke? I don’t think you do.

I like the tacit admission that only white peopel know how to raise stable, prosperous homes, and therefore, they must be broken down so everyone is now equal in dysfunctional family units, it's only fair that if the others' don't succeeded, you can't either.

And once society is ground down into pink human paste, then the Government, as ordained by the right side of history, can get about re-creating it the "proper" way where everyone gets a pod and bugmeal and true equality is reached at last...

It's socialism, folks, getting ahead is VERBOTEN.

If Houston is any example, do away with zoning altogether and things will eventually shake out the way cities are "supposed" to look...townhomes and giant apartment blocks will replace single family housing and less-dense apartment complexes, businesses will choose to locate on main roads and not in the middle of the street, etc., and like many big cities these processes ultimately tend to drive the middle class out into the suburbs but it's market forces, not governmental control.

Actually instituting restrictive zoning laws statewide will completely fuck over the middle class statewide, and end up driving people not out to the suburbs/rural area but out of the state entirely.

I forsee the Dems passing a law that says since personal mobility is white supremacy you can't move out of state without approval.... which won't be granted because the Diversity Board thinks you're leaving for racist reasons.

The slowest runner sets the pace.

As someone who's lived in major cities and burbs, I'm not making an edgy joke saying it's the ghettos and low income areas that push us normal working people away.

We scrimp and save and work for something simple, a window is smashed, eh assholes gonna asshole even in a gated millionaire community. When people gun each other down over sneakers on your street, you HAVE to leave. That class of people will never change. Tping a house you grow out of.

Even nicer part of the cities travel is so easy, WE get robbed, because better loot. It's why we have to hide in our little burbs. Some are nicer than others, but the only reason most of us are tied to the dumpy towns/areas are because our check book is pulling us back and holding there.

I love not being scared of the people near by, having their door key and them having mine. We built something special on my little road. It didn't cost anything, me raking some leaves and a polite wave and being given a welcome here pie. It didn't have to do with race color or creed (it's a mixed race area even). It had to do with people who are all different but have a simple goal of being a decent human and protecting investments and having a nice happy life.

No matter where I lived in the cities, rough spots nice spots you HAVE to be on guard as people travel to steal, as mentioned before. You can't look out for anyone because you are so busy looking out for your own. Crabs in a box will always be as such and we've spent almost 70 years now trying to prove else wise not just to blacks but to everyone and it's gotten worse.

So they figure to drag down everyone else, just not to the top of the top and that's a closed door boys club, not the avg person who could 100+ years ago check in to Ellis island not able to read or write and make a middle class life or maybe be the richest to ever life.

It's always going on an angle where it seems like it's not a big deal, they just want to take my yard away. I mean who cares less grass to mow right! No, man it's so much more.. it's so god damned much more than some kentucky blue and a lawn boy.

Incidentally, this is why Trump has quietly rebuilt the Judiciary, because he knows that the instant he's out of office, and the instant a new Dem regime takes over, THIS Is exactly how they're going to act, they're out to make the people pay for 8 years of unapproved wrongthinking and they're going to come for your house, your paycheck, your car, your internet, your guns and all personal property they can think of putting in a bill with a vengeance so that the rabble gets their punishment for being rabble.

"For the planet" and "To stop systematic racism" will be the stated justifications, but the REAL motivator is petty REVENGE. They tried to meet the yokels half-way and just let them naturally die off, but that didn't work, so now, they will feel morally justified in killing them outright by choking them with strangulating government.

The lunacy in the VA legislature isn't about pushing a political ethos, it's about spanking the common man who won't bend a knee to prog-socialism so hard his bloody butt cheeks fly off...and they'll laugh as they do it.

If you won't knuckle under to the winning ideas we promote, we'll just have to FORCE you to as you're too dumb and racist to be reasoned with.....

Even now, there are hardline blue Dems looking out the windows of their limos at the guy in the pickup the next lane over and thinking "Soon, you bigoted hillbilly, very SOON, you will get your reward for what you've done! We'll make trucks illegal! and Guns! And racist hats! And we'll destroy your silly and illegal rural sanctuaries, we'll see them BURN and then fall to the bulldozer plow for section 8 housing as far as the eye can see! What will you do then? HUH? JUST YOU WAIT!" when pickup man's done nothing to them, except the gravest of crimes, he REJECTED them.

And only a judiciary that won't rubber-stamp "Equality" legislation has any hope of stopping the coming storm of punitive socialism by the worst scorned ex-girlfriends you can imagine.

They always seem to push shit that will mash whites and minorities together but they never really explain why diversity of skin color benefits the community. I have yet to encounter anyone who can explain what diversity (of race, not thought) actually does for the community beyond the classic "DIVERSITY IS STRENGTH". how? in what way?
