Iraqi supporters of Iran-backed militia attack US Embassy

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA12 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AP) — Dozens of angry Iraqi Shiite militia supporters broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday after smashing a main door and setting fire to a reception area, prompting tear gas and sounds of gunfire.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main building inside embassy. It was not clear what caused the fire at the reception area near the parking lot of the compound. A man on a loudspeaker urged the mob not to enter the compound, saying: “The message was delivered.”

The embassy attack followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said it was in retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that it had blamed on the militia.

Dozens of protesters marched inside the compound after smashing the gate used by cars to enter the embassy. The protesters, many in militia uniform, stopped in a corridor after about 5 meters (16 feet), and were only about 200 meters away from the main building. Half a dozen U.S. soldiers were seen on the roof of the main building, their guns were pointed at the protesters.

Smoke from the tear gas rose in the area, and at least three of the protesters appeared to have difficulties breathing. It wasn’t immediately known whether the embassy staff had remained inside the main building.

The protesters hanged a poster on the wall: “America is an aggressor.”

Shouting “Down, Down USA,” the crowd tried to push inside the embassy grounds, hurling water and stones over its walls. They raised yellow militia flags and taunted the embassy’s security staff who remained behind the glass windows in the gates’ reception area. They sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows in red in support of the Kataeb Hezbollah militia: “Closed in the name of the resistance.”

Hundreds of angry protesters, some in militia uniforms, set up tents outside the embassy. As tempers rose, the mob set fire to three trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.

No one was immediately reported hurt in the rampage and security staff had withdrawn to inside the embassy earlier, soon after protesters gathered outside.

The U.S. attack — the largest targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia in recent years — and the subsequent calls by the militia for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East.

Tuesday’s attempted embassy storming took place after mourners and supporters held funerals for the militia fighters killed in a Baghdad neighborhood, after which they marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking till they reached the sprawling U.S. Embassy there.

AP journalists then saw the crowd as they tried to scale the walls of the embassy, in what appeared to be an attempt to storm it, shouting “Down, down USA!” and “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday’s strikes send the message that the U.S. will not tolerate actions by Iran that jeopardize American lives.

The Iranian-backed Iraqi militia had vowed Monday to retaliate for the U.S. military strikes. The attack and vows for revenge raised concerns of new attacks that could threaten American interests in the region.

The U.S. attack also outraged both the militias and the Iraqi government, which said it will reconsider its relationship with the U.S.-led coalition — the first time it has said it will do so since an agreement was struck to keep some U.S. troops in the country. It called the attack a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.

In a partly televised meeting Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told Cabinet members that he had tried to stop the U.S. operation “but there was insistence” from American officials.

The U.S. military said “precision defensive strikes” were conducted against five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The group, which is a separate force from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Many of them are supported by Iran.

Yes, but those M1 just fall apart after a couple of miles. some idiot had the idea to build them with a laughable bad engine.
If you'd stop driving that couple miles at 100MPH shooting the main gun at everything in sight and running over entire highways of vehicles while feathering the throttle to play the guitar riffs for "Highway to Hell", maybe the fucking engine would last longer!

Edit: Little comedy anecdote I heard about for the US taxpayers and any tankers out there in Kiwiland. At Log Base Echo, in December of 1990, some brand new butterbar fresh out of ROTC gathered together a work crew of lower enlisted to clean the main filters of a battalion of M1A1's. He had them pull all the filters, stack them in stacks, the fucking pressure washed them then compressed/forced air dried them, then had the enlisted put the filters back in the tanks. Then this titan of military genius told the tankers that their tanks were ready.

Not one tank made it a mile before the fucking engines seized.

Your tax dollars at work.

Surprise that the three of them are dead in only a two day span. That sure was quick.

According to reports, Kuwait is helping. The guy on the far right in that photo attempted to assassinate the Emir of Kuwait in the 80s.

And remember when the liberal media said we abandoned the Kurds? Yeah, well, the Kurds are currently having a giant pizza party to celebrate.

The problem with this line of thinking is Muslims, which Iran appears to consist primarily of, don't bother to make the same humane distinction you do. It's a platitude at this point (and I already linked this information earlier) but many Islamic groups see killing non-believers, even "non-combatants", and even women and children as a necessity to propagate their religion. Those who don't actively perform these atrocities largely condone it or turn a blind eye, because the "kafir" are little more than animals to Islam and thus undeserving of sympathy nor mercy.

It's tiresome to suggest Iran, or Iranians, be treated in a way they refuse to treat others, especially when it leads to extended, futile occupations. The nation of Iran already chose their fate during the revolution, where they rejected (and then later openly combated) the rest of the civilized world in favor of a deranged, pedophilic warlord's scripture. The only viable option now is to slay Iran uniformly, lay its corpse at the feet of the caliphate and declare "this will be you if you don't start behaving." Then do the same for Israel.

Look back on ancient history and realize the only time Islam has ever relented is when they were conquered violently. If we're going to repeat 2001, at least have the decency to do it properly and start culling this infestation of kneeling roaches.

The Muslims who think like that are mostly Wahhabis. The state religion of our "ally" Saudi Arabia who we back against Iran. It's also the religion of Al Qaeda and ISIS both of which were fought by Iran. The Iranians sided with the Christian Armenians over their fellow Twelver Shia Muslim Azerbaijanis during the Nagarno-Karabakh War. The Iranians and Hezbollah are also very close to Christians in the Middle East. In fact the largest Lebanese Christian party is in a coalition with Hezbollah.

Don't fall for Zionist propaganda. Another war will just create refugees that The West will have to import. As they say: "Invade the world, invite the world."

Kuwait deciding to dip their toes in and help is suprising but, I guess it does make sense.

Gotcha, hard to argue with history, but I'll PL a tiny bit here, only because I'm an old fuck.

I remember when the US and Iran were actually friends. Shah days, before the Ayatollahs took over. The country was becoming very progressive. So much so that we had Iranian sailors in the very same classes I took in the Navy. They were decent guys, but reserved. Getting to know one of them closer, he explained that failure was not an option, no matter how hard some of our classes were (and they were tough). Flunking a class meant being sent back to Iran, where he and likely his whole family would be executed as being a "disgrace to Iran." All of them seriously feared this, no shit, and were always at the top of their classes. They were good kids, not "terrorists." They spoke perfect English and you never heard a word about Allah.

There were indeed people dancing in the streets today in Iran because this fucker got charbroiled. Given an overthrow of the mullahs and shit, I honestly believe you'd see a much more peaceful and wanting to westernize Iran. Rate me fucking rainbows, whatever, but they were well on their way to being a very progressive before all the caliphate shit, which just sucked them all back into a authoritarian Muslim 1000 years ago shithole.

My friend, the US didn't institute a draft when the sandmen flew a plane into buildings on their own soil. I doubt they'll start one up over this.

I remember that was rumored a lot back in the 2000s, that they were bringing back the draft, there was even a "what if?" movie about it starring Elijah Wood.

I have vague memories of playing in the floor next to the TV with the news showing video footage of happenings during the Iraq war.

I remember looking at the equipment and thinking, even as a wee lass, "daaang how old are the terrorists' trucks and tanks? How do they function?"

The Iraq war in the 2000s or the Gulf War in the 1990s?

It's also sad to see Iran that it is now. You've probably seen pictures of what Iran used to be like before it became a theocratic dictatorship and what it looks like after.

This is what Iran used to look like before and after the revolution. Iran before looked like they were going to be the next Japan or Switzerland or something and then came the theocrats that fucked everything up and everything looks like something out of a dystopian novel now.

UPDATE: 6:15pm EST—
U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien has now told reporters that the United States chose to strike Soleimani because he was planning attacks on U.S. military and diplomatic personnel, but declined to offer any specifics. He also said that the Trump administration had used the authority within the 2002 Authorization for the Use of Military Force in Iraq, originally enacted to enable the American-led invasion of the country in 2003 and subsequent occupation.

National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien tells reporters President Trump authorized the DoD strike that killed Quds Force leader Qassim Soleimani under the 2002 AUMF, 1st used to authorize 2003 invasion of Iraq. Admin had only said strikes were "decisive defensive action" before.

National security adviser Robert O'Brien just briefed reporters on the Soleimani strike. Said Soleimani came from Damascus, where he was plotting attacks on US diplos and mil. But asked to provide evidence, he said intel was "extraordinarily sensitive" and declined to discuss

NBC News is reporting that the potential attacks were set to come against American interests in Lebanon and Syria and it remains unclear what information indicated that the threats were imminent.

US officials tells @NBCNews that Soleimani killed for plotting to strike US targets in Syria & Lebanon. Congressional aide briefed on intel said lawmakers saw nothing explicitly linking him to imminent attack - the planning & coordination not out of the ordinary for Quds Force.
— Louisa Loveluck (@leloveluck) January 3, 2020
U.S. military officials have also told CNN that coalition operations against ISIS in Iraq are only proceeding on a "limited" basis as the immediate focus for American forces has shifted to force protection. Depending on how long this crisis lasts, and whether it leads to the U.S. military's expulsion from Iraq, the terrorist group could exploit the situation and regroup.

The official said they've “increased security & defensive measures at the #Iraq-i bases that host anti-ISIS Coalition troops. Our command places protection of US Forces, as well as our allies & security partners in the Coalition as the top priority; we remain vigilant & resolute”
— Hamdi (@HamdiAlkhshali) January 3, 2020
O'Brien added that he hoped the Iraqi government would not choose to eject U.S. forces. The "U.S. has invested enormous amounts of blood and treasure in helping the Iraqi build up a democracy," he said.

Just in: Trump's National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien says US would be "very disappointed" if Iraq expels 5,000 US troops after DoD strike killed Quds Force leader Soleimani. "US has invested enormous amounts of blood & treasure in helping the Iraqi build up a democracy"

In the meantime, the U.S. military is continuing to move more forces toward Middle East. The U.S. Navy has now scrapped a combined exercise in and around Morocco and is instead sending the Wasp class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, as well as other elements of its Expeditionary Strike Group and the embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit further east.
UPDATE: 6:35pm EST—
There are unconfirmed reports emerging now of an apparent airstrike against another small convoy carrying Popular Mobilization Forces members near Taji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. It is very possible that details about this incident will change soon, but Shubl al-Zaidi, commander of Kataib Imam Ali, another Iranian-backed militia under the PMF umbrella, was reportedly riding in one of the vehicles. Hamid al-Jazaeri, deputy head of Saraya al-Khorasani, which has fought in both Iraq and Syria and has ties to the Quds Force, was also reported to have been in the convoy.

An airstrike targets a PMU commander near Taji. Not confirmed who the target is. If the US is following on from yesterday’s attack then it has adopted a strategy to confront Iran https://t.co/xBYBLyZkiq

Interesting precedent. Usual doctrine from the 3 stooges coalition in the middle east (Israel, Saudi Arabia, USA) had been to strike the octopus' hands whenever they popped up, be it Hezbollah, Hamas, Mahdi Army, Houthi's etc. but perception was always that you were only killing useful idiots that were uneducated simpletons, easy fodder, easy target practice, Suicide Bombers, and getting executed by ISIS on video wondering why no one negotiated for their release. But striking Tehran proper, this may be the turning point of the decade.

Also I don't doubt for a second this was just hostage crisis 2 electric boogalo in it's infancy.

Russia is not backing Iran at this time.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

They actually did it. They wrote a sternly worded letter.

This is actually huge. Iran went to the security council because its basically where the big boys play. If Russia says no, that's a major problem. Meaning that Iran can't escalate because Russia is not going to be dragged into the conflict. It also sens a message to the US in that we can keep decapitating Iranian leadership without Russian interference, and Chinese interference.

Iran just got fucked in the ass publicly and there is nothing they can do.

If Iran gets its shit pushed in, Russia and China can suddenly remember that Iran's an ally after the mullahs are wiped the fuck out, half the country is in shambles, and their military is smoked. They can put pressure on the US to halt all military actions and withdraw under a cease fire.

I like the entire thesis, but what the US usally does after a war is basically:

"ALL THIS SHIT FUCKING SUCKS, ITS ALL PURE GARBAGE. MAKE IT AGAIN. TAKE IT APART AND USE IT FOR SCRAPS FAGGOTS. OUR KD WAS 49.6:1. WE NEED THAT TO 50:1 YOU ASSHOLES. WHO DO YOU THINK WE ARE, FRANCE?"

Yeah, this is really unprecedented. Our shoddy assassinations were basically fucktards we threw hellfire missles at randomly.. What we're hitting now is experienced generals who have insurgency experience. The damage we're doing to Iran right now is insane. We're basically burning down years of their plans in days.

Trump is cutting off the entire head in one swift swing.

Go ahead and retaliate, Iran. We have plenty of missiles to go around.
The best part is how they're able to do absolutely nothing to stop this. They were all on high-alert from the second that all of this started to go down, and nothing they're doing is able to intercept these attacks. The Iraqis are obviously on board, since they're allowing all of this to go down inside of their airspace, which means that Iranian capabilities were significantly degraded in secret.

The Mullahs are watching their leadership get ripped into pieces right in front of their eyes, and the only thing that they can do is send a strongly-worded letter to the U.N. This isn't a war, this is a clean-up operation and you're watching their regime crumble in real-time. A long time ago I said that Iran was up next. I wasn't kidding. The plan to destabilize the Mullahs' regime and break Iran away from their stranglehold has been in the works for a long time now.

It's also sad to see Iran that it is now. You've probably seen pictures of what Iran used to be like before it became a theocratic dictatorship and what it looks like after.
Persepolis is actually a really great graphic autobio that touches on this. I got introduced to it in middle school and would read it about once every two years after that up until I graduated. It's been a hot minute since then, though.

That's a slight mis-characterization. The collateral damage was largely attributed to a delay in action on the F3EAD and re-F3EAD cycles under the previous administration. They basically waited until information was almost no longer actionable before executing. This is no longer the case. Coupled with the fact that there were ~5500 drone strikes in 2019 (the current administration hasn't been completely compliant with reporting). Additionally, something that is a little curious more AGM-114 Type RX9's are being fielded (and manufactured). It should be noted that Soleimani was not droned with an RX9, which is odd because the strike happened at an airport.

Apparently hordes of PMU leaders are scrambling back into Iran as fast as they can to hide. That's so devastating to the image of Iran and its proxies it's hard to believe. In 2 days Iran has gone from aspiring regional hegemon to "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF". The longer this goes on the more the "fire some rockets at US bases and hope for the best" response looks weak and even cowardly. They have to respond spectacularly but... they can't. The now infamous "You won't do shit" tweet from their bigboo has become "we can't do shit". An unconventional response will be seen as weak and ineffective. Any attempt a conventional response on the ground or naval will see them buttfucked harder and more complete than even now.

It simple.

Because it's funnier.

Using something real cool makes that guy look cool by proxy. Spinning blades rototilling the guy is kind of cool in a metal death kind of way.

Getting splattered by a surplus Hellfire some drunken fuck at the Turkish AFB found at the back of the bunker isn't cool.
