Iraqi supporters of Iran-backed militia attack US Embassy

BAGHDAD (AP) — Dozens of angry Iraqi Shiite militia supporters broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday after smashing a main door and setting fire to a reception area, prompting tear gas and sounds of gunfire.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main building inside embassy. It was not clear what caused the fire at the reception area near the parking lot of the compound. A man on a loudspeaker urged the mob not to enter the compound, saying: “The message was delivered.”

The embassy attack followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said it was in retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that it had blamed on the militia.

Dozens of protesters marched inside the compound after smashing the gate used by cars to enter the embassy. The protesters, many in militia uniform, stopped in a corridor after about 5 meters (16 feet), and were only about 200 meters away from the main building. Half a dozen U.S. soldiers were seen on the roof of the main building, their guns were pointed at the protesters.

Smoke from the tear gas rose in the area, and at least three of the protesters appeared to have difficulties breathing. It wasn’t immediately known whether the embassy staff had remained inside the main building.

The protesters hanged a poster on the wall: “America is an aggressor.”

Shouting “Down, Down USA,” the crowd tried to push inside the embassy grounds, hurling water and stones over its walls. They raised yellow militia flags and taunted the embassy’s security staff who remained behind the glass windows in the gates’ reception area. They sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows in red in support of the Kataeb Hezbollah militia: “Closed in the name of the resistance.”

Hundreds of angry protesters, some in militia uniforms, set up tents outside the embassy. As tempers rose, the mob set fire to three trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.

No one was immediately reported hurt in the rampage and security staff had withdrawn to inside the embassy earlier, soon after protesters gathered outside.

The U.S. attack — the largest targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia in recent years — and the subsequent calls by the militia for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East.

Tuesday’s attempted embassy storming took place after mourners and supporters held funerals for the militia fighters killed in a Baghdad neighborhood, after which they marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking till they reached the sprawling U.S. Embassy there.

AP journalists then saw the crowd as they tried to scale the walls of the embassy, in what appeared to be an attempt to storm it, shouting “Down, down USA!” and “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday’s strikes send the message that the U.S. will not tolerate actions by Iran that jeopardize American lives.

The Iranian-backed Iraqi militia had vowed Monday to retaliate for the U.S. military strikes. The attack and vows for revenge raised concerns of new attacks that could threaten American interests in the region.

The U.S. attack also outraged both the militias and the Iraqi government, which said it will reconsider its relationship with the U.S.-led coalition — the first time it has said it will do so since an agreement was struck to keep some U.S. troops in the country. It called the attack a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.

In a partly televised meeting Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told Cabinet members that he had tried to stop the U.S. operation “but there was insistence” from American officials.

The U.S. military said “precision defensive strikes” were conducted against five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The group, which is a separate force from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Many of them are supported by Iran.

I have been keeping an eye out for credible US casualty reports, I have seen none. Not that Iran hasn't tried.

At this point it looks like no Iranian missiles came anywhere close to their intended targets. Not sure on collateral damage. But they are shooting at Kurdish areas who hate Iran. So expect fun either way.

Right, there's a lot of US corporations who will greatly benefit from the extra tax dollars that are redirected to their wallets.

Not as much as you might think. Look at Lockheed Martin’s profits from 2019. Besides being insanely high, they are literally their best ever. Much the same with Hughes. They are pretty much at running at full production capacity now. And international orders keep pouring in.

If Iran gets whacked, they've had it coming since 1979. Remember when the US Embassy was captured and our people made hostages. ONLY reason the Iranians let those hostages go was because Ronald Reagan had been inaugurated and they were scared shitless of what he might do. Iran's caused a lot of death and destruction throughout the Middle East since then. Leaving out the Iran-Iraq War, Iran developed a sense of invulnerability over time. "The Americans can't do anything!". Well, there's a new sheriff in town, and he's had enough, starting with offing one of Iran's main scumbags.

Oh, we won't send in any large numbers of ground troops. Most likely Special Operations, to join those already there. No need to. Believe we know the targets we need to hit. And for some reason if it comes to that suspect we'll be getting very quiet assistance from Israel and Saudi Arabia. If Iran lashes out at Israel believe Trump will invite them to join the party. Can see Israeli strike aircraft staging out of Saudi Arabia, and/or coming from Israel. refueled by US tanker aircraft. Can also see Iranian Navy bases along the Strait of Hormuz getting hit very quickly. And you never know just what other tricks the US/Israel may have up their sleeves.

Added: The intention is NOT to conquer Iran. No way. The primary intention is to make these assholes stop attacking Americans, anywhere. Can also see nuclear facilities being hit. As previously mentioned, can see certain infrastructure being hit. Far as the Iranian Air Force goes, big fucking deal. Anyone want to guess how long they'd last against US airpower/air defense? Hours? The Iranian AF would have no chance versus the Israelis, either. No, the Russians will not help Iran. Neither will the Chinese.

Smartest play for Iran...say they retaliated and back off - while they still can.

Why would either the Chinese or Russian’s help Iran in this instance. Trump blew away an Iranian dickhead on Iraqi soil because he engineered an attack on a US embassy. Neither Putin nor Xi will see any problem with Trump’s actions in this regard. If Iran is stupid enough to send it’s outdated Air For e outside of Iranian air space they won’t care what happens to it. Putin would even House a vodka if Trump starts splatting Iranian oil infrastructure. Although Xi might take issue as he wants the oil. But even that might be acceptable to Xi if it keeps Trump entertained blowing the shit out of Iranian targets, and less militarily focused on the South China Sea.

You can see these greasy little rat-fuck's thought process right there.

"You can't retaliate. If you do, we'll bomb these other people! HAHA! YOU CAN'T ATTACK BACK, US!"

They're so used to doing whatever the fuck they want, they bought into their own press, started believing their own lies about how they can beat the US. They mistook their meddling in Iraq for how it'll be actually facing off against the US Army.

Now that they've basically started taking hostages again "We'll attack Haifa and Dubia" they expect the US to back down.

But you know what? I think that maybe, just maybe, the entire world, including their neighbors, are just plain sick of their shit.

Here's a little thought experiment: How long ago would we have left Iraq if Iran hadn't been sending EID's, foreign fighters, and creating/supporting insurgent groups?

Except it isn't whatever flavor of Jew people are sperging about this week.

This has been coming between the US and Iran for 40 fucking years. The Jews didn't overrun the American Embassy. The Jews didn't make it so the entire 1980's was synonymous with terrorist bombings and hijackings. The Jews didn't flood Iraq with IED's and soldiers for 15 years to destabilize the US's attempt to make a government or make the area safe. The Jews aren't the ones who tried to overrun our embassy earlier this week.

No.

This is Iran, and only Iran, thinking that they've gotten away with everything their camel fucking little hearts desire so they can just keep acting like insane assholes and the US will continue to not do anything.

This shit has been coming for 40 fucking years. It's leftover bullshit from the Cold War.

Let's bury it under a mound of Iranian skulls and move the fuck on.
It's time to find out what happens to Islams now that they can't hide behind the west's need for oil production.

Holy shit, is Iran fucking insane? It's one thing to cry to the UN after years of posturing because a general died in a totally un-muslim way, it's another to START LOBBING MISSILES at US FUCKING ARMY BASES AFTER SAID LOSS.

If Trump REALLY does make a speech, it better be something along the lines of "Iran as you know it is going to die in the next few hours", cuz seeing the sheer audacity of these religious zealots thinking THEY are the ones in control here is making my blood boil to a fucking TEE.

Get ready boys and girls, these next few days are gonna be LIT.

I was really willing to give Iran the benefit of the doubt earlier (Silly, I know) but why are they attacking non-US civilian centers?
Their shitty rockets aren't very accurate and I have no idea how tight a leash they actually have their militias on. Even if they did it completely on their own the smart move to save face would be for the Iranian government to say "oh yeah we told them to" or else look powerless and incompetent.

Yeah sure, let's see if India will appreciate you taking out US grievances on their land.

If not the US, I'd fully expect India to do a number on Iran if they go through with it.

That signed part remains disputed. Such diplomatic letters are often simply not signed. And there are supposed to be watermarks. None. Nada.

To attempt to harm US allies in the Middle East, so they'll back off from aiding the US in this conflict.

  • Agree
Reactions: Exterminatus
We're bigger than you, we're better than you, we have the technological, economic, strategic and moral high ground, and the fact you continue to exist at all is on our sufferance. But that's fine. All we ask is you leave us the fuck alone.
Everyone loses on this. Both sides face large casualties for pretty much no reason. Being bigger technologically/economically didn't cause us to "win" wars against Vietnam, or Iraq, or Afghanistan. No one really won. We just keep destabilizing the Middle East in the hopes they don't form a coherent power that could challenge us economically or militarily, but always end up with unintended consequences, like the creation of suicide bombing, or intense anti-American sentiment, or instilling leaders who then (go figure) end up becoming our enemies years later. We not only caused much of its current state from actions taken decades ago, but also endlessly continued to fester with the wound.

If we go to war now, I'm totally okay with it- it's not unjustified, there are no lies about WMDs, no stupid government building. Just good old fashioned punching an asshole in the teeth for spitting on us. The Iranians actually justified this happening to them multiple times now and this is just obviously hard to ignore. It's like they want to get reamed.

And yes, we will profit sadly. Unlike in the past however, oil is not a concern when we're the now leading exporter of oil and natural gas so if someone says it's about oil, they're an idiot.

The problem with those wars is that we were primarily in it for nation building, not retaliating for acts of war against the USA. A war of defense against aggression is mighty different than vague "containment" wars.

Neither Dubai (a city in the UAE) nor Haifa (an Israel city) are in India.

Jew-related sperging is deleted because it's shallow and it's thought-terminating. It doesn't create or fuel meaningful discussions or debates, it just causes a thread to immediately descend into nothing but, "Fuck Israel Jews are cancer die Jews" for the next 30 pages. It's a useless herd mentality that does nothing but shit up whatever thread it pops into.

If I deleted posts purely because I disagreed with them, Ashy wouldn't even have 5 posts in A&H. I deleted the posts because something important is happening and we don't need 200 "I hate the Jews" posts cluttering up the thread while everyone's collating information. If you hate Jews, that's fine. I disagree with you, but whatever.
But posts that are just a retelling of YEAH KILL EM and FUCK SANDNIGGERS(except israel) are encouraged??
