Iraqi supporters of Iran-backed militia attack US Embassy

BAGHDAD (AP) — Dozens of angry Iraqi Shiite militia supporters broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday after smashing a main door and setting fire to a reception area, prompting tear gas and sounds of gunfire.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main building inside embassy. It was not clear what caused the fire at the reception area near the parking lot of the compound. A man on a loudspeaker urged the mob not to enter the compound, saying: “The message was delivered.”

The embassy attack followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said it was in retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that it had blamed on the militia.

Dozens of protesters marched inside the compound after smashing the gate used by cars to enter the embassy. The protesters, many in militia uniform, stopped in a corridor after about 5 meters (16 feet), and were only about 200 meters away from the main building. Half a dozen U.S. soldiers were seen on the roof of the main building, their guns were pointed at the protesters.

Smoke from the tear gas rose in the area, and at least three of the protesters appeared to have difficulties breathing. It wasn’t immediately known whether the embassy staff had remained inside the main building.

The protesters hanged a poster on the wall: “America is an aggressor.”

Shouting “Down, Down USA,” the crowd tried to push inside the embassy grounds, hurling water and stones over its walls. They raised yellow militia flags and taunted the embassy’s security staff who remained behind the glass windows in the gates’ reception area. They sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows in red in support of the Kataeb Hezbollah militia: “Closed in the name of the resistance.”

Hundreds of angry protesters, some in militia uniforms, set up tents outside the embassy. As tempers rose, the mob set fire to three trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.

No one was immediately reported hurt in the rampage and security staff had withdrawn to inside the embassy earlier, soon after protesters gathered outside.

The U.S. attack — the largest targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia in recent years — and the subsequent calls by the militia for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East.

Tuesday’s attempted embassy storming took place after mourners and supporters held funerals for the militia fighters killed in a Baghdad neighborhood, after which they marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking till they reached the sprawling U.S. Embassy there.

AP journalists then saw the crowd as they tried to scale the walls of the embassy, in what appeared to be an attempt to storm it, shouting “Down, down USA!” and “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday’s strikes send the message that the U.S. will not tolerate actions by Iran that jeopardize American lives.

The Iranian-backed Iraqi militia had vowed Monday to retaliate for the U.S. military strikes. The attack and vows for revenge raised concerns of new attacks that could threaten American interests in the region.

The U.S. attack also outraged both the militias and the Iraqi government, which said it will reconsider its relationship with the U.S.-led coalition — the first time it has said it will do so since an agreement was struck to keep some U.S. troops in the country. It called the attack a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.

In a partly televised meeting Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told Cabinet members that he had tried to stop the U.S. operation “but there was insistence” from American officials.

The U.S. military said “precision defensive strikes” were conducted against five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The group, which is a separate force from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Many of them are supported by Iran.

King's been fucked in the head since forever, he's been a frothing idiot about anything/anyone to the left of him since at least the 1990s, probably before. He did that show in the early 2000s, "The Dome" (also based on a book of his), and straight up said, "Yes the bad guys in this are based on the current administration" (the Bush admin).

I also think of the really out of place abortion stuff in Insomnia, in which King makes cartoon villains out of anti-abortion activists.

Why would his dumb politics make you stop being a fan of his work?

I’m still a fan of his work, it’s just a disappointment the man behind them could be so dumb.

Iran has to be seriously shaken right now. Their last real strategic weapon was its missiles. The fact that this response has caused zero American casualties has to be terrifying.

Alternatively I wonder if that's what they were hoping for, and this is their plan to win a domestic propaganda victory where everyone just calls it even? For whatever it's worth they pinky swore there would be no more attacks if the US didn't retaliate, which we wouldn't really have a reason to do if the reports of that no US personnel were killed or injured are accurate. Iran's government may be a bunch of crazy assholes who love brinkmanship as much as Trump does, but they don't strike me as suicidal idiots. They have to know we could flatten Iran without putting any boots on the ground if we really wanted to, because they would run out of interceptors long before we would run out of AGMs

Because there are different shades of dark grey, it's generally better to be on the side of the lighter shades. Or do you think Iran has moral parity with the US?
For starters I'm not a child who thinks in terms of black and white (or "darker shade of gray" vs "lighter shade of gray" as you put it) but even if I were the US would be one of the last countries I'd place on the "lighter shades". I'm not cheering for Iran mind you, they're doing an absolutely pathetic job and making the stupidest possible decisions and definitely would not be surprised if they were bombed even after cucking out, but to say that a country is "morally superior" (the US of all countries!) to another one is beyond foolish. Do you really believe morality is objective? Don't even answer that...

How are we so sure a war with Iran won't bring in China and Russia?

Because I'm not convinced it won't at all, I'm really not convinced.

Because neither want to take ownership for (another) pack of Muslim theocrats that will turn on them the moment their back is turned. Putin is in Syria, a mostly reasonably secular Muslim Nation, because it gains him a Warm Water Port and Middle Eastern Military Basing at minimal risk. There isn’t much in Iran that he would want that would be worth the aggravation of dealing with the Mullah’s. Remember Iran’s specialty is stirring up dissent and Muslim proxy militia’s in other countries. Putin has a moderately large Muslim population that he really does not wish to invite the Iranians into.

China is not exactly looking to import or tie itself to more Muslim troubles either. It’s getting ever harder to hide all the bodies. And you can only sell so much low grade canned dog food before people start to ask questions.

the Ayatolla’s are a two headed snake that none of the world leaders are anxious to grab.

This is probably going to snowball into World War 3, end of the world stuff.
A war? Maybe. A "World" war? How? No one is standing with Iran.
They overplayed their hand big time attacking an embassy. Russia and China has already told them they are on their own.

Iran has no real navy, no real airforce. They are a reginal threat with their WWII-tier rail missiles. All they can do is the same shit they have been doing for the last 40 years. Car bombs and IEDs in their own backyard.

*50 Years of Iran being the drama queen of the world causing shit*

"IT IS ALL ON TRUMP"
In 1953 the US and the UK orchestrated a coup of the democratically elected PM of Iran and instilled a Persian king in his place to obtain cheap oil. This same king would later be the reason for the Iranian Revolution, and the start of theocratic dictatorship. The Reagan admin also fucked things up just to intentionally destabilized the Middle East in pursuit of some undefined "balance" (i.e. keep the ME fighting itself as much as possible) and there was a healthy flow of arms into the region to keep things rolling. Post-Reagan admins obviously didn't start the fire either, but they worsened the shit-show that was already there for political benefit and the conflict continued warping the people into derangement.

I think you (and a lot of other people) are seriously over estimating Iran's intentions tonight/ this morning. As time drags on, it becomes more apparant that the attack was Iran's attempt to save face after their disaster earlier in the week.

This seems to be mutually understood, given that Trump's response appears to be silence, which is the most effective response if his intention is to reduce the temperature.

The Iraqi casualties are interesting. I wonder if the Iranians only relayed this to the Americans, and Trump, out of spite for their recent disloyalty, decided not to tell the Iraqis.

I don't see how that saves face though, especially in that region. It's all about big dick power. If your blood feud rival kills your family patriarch and 2 of his favorite sons, you better hit him back just as strong or ideally stronger or you look incredibly weak. Throwing a couple stones at his house and saying "now we're even" seems to be a face losing move more than anything. I get that they were in a lose lose situation, but you can't spend days promising the most severe mother of all revenges, raise the red flag of revenge doom, and then launch a few missiles that doesn't even injury a single infidel.

If that's the best they could do, then Trump really did big dick them down for the whole world to see.
