This is random and not related to SA, but I thought some of you might get a laugh. In the novel It, the first kill is a gay couple (FYI the novel was written in 1986). This scene happened in the present before the flashbacks. When the 2017 film hit, the Internet was true to form so the new Pennywise became an ironic/not-ironic sex symbol. Then it was decided he was a "Queer Icon," because.

So the sequel hit last year, and as we all know the '17 film was entirely the flashback part of the novel; so this film will be the modern part, with the characters as adults. The opening scene of the sequel adapts the opening scene of the novel (you know, as adaptations are wont to do), and you can guess what happened next:

I've lurked SA since the mid 2000s because it was a really good source of information/news about niche topics and there were some very informative posters over there. I honestly probably only made 2 or 3 posts a year when stuff really interested me or i wanted to ask someone a question.

I noticed a huge change in the tone a few years ago and everyone suddenly seemed to be on a hair-trigger when it came to finding things to be "problematic". My 10+ year old lurker account with maybe 20 posts total got perma-banned when i posted in the general video-game chat thread in the middle of a circle jerk about how Japanese game devs don't have enough minority characters in their games. Apparently, suggesting that this was because Japan is a monocultural, conservative society made me a bigot because i didn't want every second video-game character to be gay/trans/a PoC for no reason other than wokeness.

I had a back-up account because i knew that people were starting to get banned for trivial shit so i went back to lurking and i kept my mouth shut until the recent trans thing blew up. I made one post on this second account in a thread where Lowtax was trying to talk to these lunatics where i told him to just kill the forums because he'll never be able to win no matter what he does and that earned me another ban so i'm pretty much done with the place now.

A bunch of broke-brain-boys have taken over by driving all dissenters out and the few vaguely normal people that are left are just agreeing with them because they are afraid of getting banned themselves and SA still means something to them despite it being a mere shadow of its former self.

The reason 4chan groupthink isn't utterly impenetrable is because of anonymity and the inherently contrary nature of its userbase. No matter how popular an idea is there there's gonna be drive by shitposts making fun of it.

In my experience, this is how containment boards almost always go. Off the top of my head, the only instance of it working out was the My Little Pony containment board on 4chan, and that only worked because pony content is so easy to identify that anyone posting it outside its containment zone could be banned quickly and without much deliberation. Politics are a lot easier to slip in and breed a lot more resentment.

This current conversation brings back a thought I had earlier: how do sites gain immunity to being over-run by malcontents and echo chambers? Someone posited the like / dislike button can cause feedback loops. That's true. There's basically one on this site as well, but I don't see it (currently) going the way of Resetera or SA. Places like 4chan seem immune to group-think via its chaotic nature and frequent shitposts. Perhaps its an administration problem, sympathetic elements allowing echo chambers to fester? A general lack of confrontation could also be a factor, running out the elements that would harm a growing subculture so it can spread. IIRC, SA started going downhill shortly after the conservative posters were banned or ostracized.

The problem with SA containment boards is they aren't containment boards. They are recruiting, planning, and progaganda centers for their flamewars & thread invasions.

When the commies overran the Landlord thread, all that shit was planned and the lulz had in CSPAM. If the moderators had actually cared about discussion, they would have banned the invaders and probated the cheerleaders. They don't, so they allowed it happen with tiny slaps on the wrists for the worst invaders, and nothing for the people who started/stirred the shit in CSPAM because 'its in line with CSPAM posting guidelines' or w/e. They then banned and probed thread regulars for "bad posting" if they responded to the threadshitters.

Conversely, if BFC had tried to counter thread-shit into CSPAM, they would have been rapidly probed and banned.

There is nothing wrong with proper containment boards "Politics go here" "Race stuff goes here" "Bronies go to the hyper-coupon board so they can get the best deals on exit bags"; but you can't set up a whole 'only commie posting allowed' board where the commies can talk commie shop and then export their shit to the rest of the forum, but no one else can come challenge them on their turf without facing mod action.

I think KF's upvote/downvote systems works because, firstly, it allows you show your feeling about a post without empty quoting or a low-content cheerleading post. Because a supporting post isn't needed, there are usually fewer shrieking retards in a slap fight. And buttmad semilurkers can't simply wait for a less intelligent or articulated (or popular) poster to voice support for a view point and then jump on that post to try to pick a fight they can win.
