Isn't spraying trees in Shanghai and disinfecting mail pointless? Viruses can't survive without a host for long. It seems more like a show of force so when it peters out the CCP can claim a victory.

On Twitter, some people are reporting that seemingly healthy people are collapsing before they even show any symptoms. Can't tell if it's legit or a hoax, but at the very least it means people are becoming even more scared and paranoid due to those reports.

This is both the most fun and horrifying thread I've come across in recent weeks. It is like watching those videos of nuclear bombs going off for testing purposes in the 50's. Equal parts frightning and awesome and you can't just look away.
One thing that got to me out of everything in this thread was the fact that they don't wash their hands. I seriously thought that I was just being racist for thinking that people from a first world country with all their technoligy advancements and connections with the western world have never heard of a little thing called "soap" and "running water." It really was a culture shock to find out how backwards China was, not because they still believe in traditional medicine, not because they cook with oil that came from the sewers, not because they will kidnap their neighbors dog and sell it on the market as fresh meat just for a quick buck, not even because they have a culture of swindling literaly every one around them so that they themselves can get ahead, but that they can't spend 30 seconds to properly wash their hands after they just took a shit or touched trash.
Maybe I'm the dumb one.
That is a phenomenally steep incline and thats just the numbers they're willing to reveal.

Could be that all the wildlife eats the dead bodies in the river, which then gives them a taste for human flesh and creates maneaters. If you look at maneaters on wikipedia most of them are in India. There was this badass British guy who went around killing tons of them around the early 20th century.

You know what's depressing to think about? This whole thing is probably in a large part Mao's fault. He was the one who pushed "traditional" Chinese medicine on the populace as propaganda (he used actual medication on himself, naturally), his hairbrained utopian schemes utterly destroyed social trust and any semblance of manners inside China, and of course he left the CCP behind to blight the world in his place.

The Spanish Flu hit the world during WWI, a time without antibiotics and advanced medicine. Either China is a country living in pre-20th century conditions (due to stupidity and superstition) which makes it this virus deadly for the Chinese but not everyone else or this is a new and terrible modern plague.

It's possible this could be virus-related, but I would also suspect hysteria and fatigue. Chinese people are generally pretty thin and lightweight. As the chad bikers have said before, many Chinese people report feeling symptoms of fatigue and lethargy after a single missed meal. Their metabolisms work fast, and they don't eat the same kind of food westerners eat. I'd imagine many of these people haven't been sleeping well and have been enduring a very high-stress environment for a while. That doesn't exactly help matters.
