Business Firms urged to crack down on office football chat - D'you see that ludicrous display last night?

Chat about football or cricket in the workplace should be curtailed, a management body has warned.

Chartered Management Institute head Ann Francke said sports banter can exclude women and lead to laddish behaviour such as chat about sexual conquests.

"A lot of women, in particular, feel left out," she told the BBC's Today programme.

"They don't follow those sports and they don't like either being forced to talk about them or not being included."

"I have nothing against sports enthusiasts or cricket fans - that's great," she said.

"But the issue is many people aren't cricket fans," she added, arguing bosses should crack down on sports banter.

Ms Francke is concerned that discussing football and, for example, the merits of video assistant refereeing (VAR) can disproportionately exclude women and divide offices.

"It's a gateway to more laddish behaviour and - if it just goes unchecked - it's a signal of a more laddish culture," she said

"It's very easy for it to escalate from VAR talk and chat to slapping each other on the back and talking about their conquests at the weekend."

'Terrible idea'
Nevertheless, Ms Francke does not think sports chatter should be banned, just moderated.

She said that good managers should be inclusive and ensure that everyone in their team feels comfortable.

But sports journalist Jacqui Oatley thinks cracking down on sports chatter would be a "terrible idea".

"If you ban football chat or banter of any description, then all you're going to do is alienate the people who actually want to communicate with each other," she told the Today programme.

"It would be so, so negative to tell people not to talk about sport because girls don't like it or women don't like it, that's far more divisive."

She said the secret was to discuss sport in an inclusive way and to notice if people were blankly "staring into space" during the conversation.

What next?
And the majority of people responding to a LinkedIn post from the BBC appear to agree with Ms Oatley.

Office manager Debra Smyth worries that other topics such as Love Island, EastEnders and Game of Thrones could also be censored if sport chatter is banned.

"I personally think companies should not dictate what people talk about, as not talking about it will alienate those with similar interests," she said.

"Where would it end? Banning people with children talking about them so as not to alienate people without children. Certainly not!"

Recruiter Peter Ferguson said: "I have seen managers and staff build a more direct bond over a shared love of sport which has excluded those who don't share that interest.

"The answer is not to ban the conversation, it is to ensure managers and staff are trained to understand that those shared interests should not get in the way of management decisions or working collaboratively."

It's news to me that footy talk leads to casual sex stories. The guy who talks about footy the most tends to go on to say how much of a bitch his wife is after complaining about City's performance.

"But But men arent supposed to have any fun, they are supposed to work so females can enjoy luxury".

Honestly at this point im no longer anti migration. Import just enought for bloody civil war for western europe that can be won. and let islamist have fun with women in meantime. Only sensible approach for survival of civilisation.

I'm not really a big sports fan but God Damn UK, you really do find ways to outdo all the other exceptional individuals.

I too used to be concerned about the importation of people into my country that don't share its values, but seeing that people already here don't observe those values either...ah fuck it.

And send some Muslims our way, would ya?

This is so retarded. I've worked in places that have had employees fairly split between men and women, and guess what? Sometimes the guys wanted to talk amongest themselves, sometimes the girls talked amongest themselves, and sometimes it was mixed depending on what we we're talking about and our individual interests!

There's nothing wrong with that, it's just how people are! Who wrote this? Oh....the BBC, that explains it. Fucking British get's closer enforcing wrong think every single day I swear.

Holy shit, I guess there's nothing wrong with a blanket presumption that women can't follow sports or aren't interested in doing so.

You ever read one of those old Cosmopolitan articles from the 50s where it advises women to stay in the kitchen and keep quiet about her gossip when her husband gets home because he's the one who has actually worked hard today, and the article looks absurd by today's standards of gender norms? That 50s cartoon of women seems to be how these people actually see women.

One time I heard my boss complaining about all the women talking about nothing but gardening. One of the things he stated was how it was excluding everyone else, since a lot of the workers don't garden, or even have a spot to do so. Eventually though he cracked down on it, saying it was encouraging radish behavior.

Legit tho what the fuck is a laddish.

Well, that ain't the good ol' US of A, for sure. In the several corps I've worked for, most women liked NFL football as much or more than the men. Friday was jersey day (during the season) and women wearing their Packers, Raiders, <insert favorite team name here> jersey were equal to if not greater than the men. Hell, watch any college or pro game and there are as many women in the stands as men. Whole families get involved in tailgating and going to the games together.

I have no fucking idea what the UK's problem is, but if the "laddies" want to talk about sports, who fucking cares? It becomes sexual talk.... bullshit. "Did you see that interception? OMG!" Can't say I've ever been in a sports conversation where it turned into a conversation about sexual conquests. More like "Your quarterback Tom Brady really sucked this weekend...whadda fag!" It's mostly just rubbing your "laddies" face in it when their team fucks up, or eating crow from them when your team shits their pants on the field.

I’ve never had a problem with men discussing sports at work. I HAVE almost gone deranged listening to endless inane chat about reality TV, general gossip, a colleague obsessed with Twilight, and a concerted nasty sniping campaign against one person who was trying to lose weight. All by women
. I am a woman, I have absolutely zero issue with a bit of sport related chat at work. Sport is actually a pretty good thing to talk about at work - it’s not political or religious or SJW stuff, so it can be talked about without people getting offended.
This kind of article drives me nuts because it paints women as humourless harpies amd/or unable to talk about sport, and paints sport as a Man Thing. Jesus it’s no wonder people think feminists are killjoys. Pick a real sodding issue to campaign on. Like cross dressing men in the loos.
