has damaged China's reputation and Xi's reputation
But did China and Xi have it in the first place? From western perspective they were and still are a totalitarian state with all its problems. I know their face thing mainly focused on their population as an inner consumption. However propaganda can still do wonders. In my opinion, if Chinese population was ok with Tiananmen square massacre, then nothing will persuade them. Soviet union wasn't killed during Stalin; it died in times of Gorbachev who was a weakling.

From my understanding is that yes a virus like this could manifest itself in nature although it would be really rare and require good timing for it to actually catch on before it mutated itself into a less viable state. It would be easier for them to make a designer virus using a template in this case the corona virus template and edit the virus to have the favorable traits you would want like highly infectious, long incubation period with the ability to transmit, bypasses the bodies immune response making it asymptomatic during the incubation period, having a moderately high fatality rate. Pretty much if this one is a naturally made virus all the stars would need to align.

The fact this virus originated from a bat and passed through a snake and was ready to jump to humans adds even more unlikelihood that this virus was created naturally.

Now your body needs to decipher the code to defeat the virus before the symptoms kill you which in this particular case is worse because its a virus that originated from the bat species jumping to humans which is like a person who speaks English trying to crack a code written in a completely different language so its a race against time where you start at a disadvantage out the gate when compared to the regular seasonal flu which the body at least has some reference point to start from.

The question would be what would be more likely?

A. The virus occurred naturally with ideal traits for a pandemic and being able to jump from one species to another and then to humans, with this so far being the only studied case of a corona type virus having the trait of being contagious during the incubation period.

or B. China was tinkering with a corona type virus in their research labs and it leaked somehow.

Both seem about as viable as the other at the moment although China's response to quarantine 50+ million people and downplay numbers make me feel as if they have a reasonable understanding of the viruses potential and that slightly shifts my vote toward the virus leaked out their lab.

By the way, I think the best historical comparison to the Corona virus is Chernobyl. A paper tiger empire absolutely fucks up infrastructure which results in a world changing catastrophe of their own making.

Though the difference is that it won't affect modern policies like Chernobyl demonized nuclear power, as well as the victims in Chernobyl were far more likable and the Russians actually did something to handle it.

Also Chernobyl didn't give people in several different countries on different continents radiation poisoning.

Edited for specifically "there weren't idiots purposefully bragging about escaping to other countries to spread said radiation.

I can't see anything linked, did you forget to add something?

Edit: thanks.

Quite telling of the CCP's handling of the situation
"Lets build a hospital made out of containers and maybe the westerners arent going to notice!"
Could've taken one of the massive fuckhuge 10 lane (now empty) roads sitting outside of this hospital and just turned it into tent city like 2 days ago.
Knowing Chinese infrastructure, the highway would also collapse.

It could have if it was mismanaged worse.
By the way, how long did it take for the full truth to come out after Chrnobyl? Because it is pretty horrifying that we're entering week 3 of the crisis and still unaware of the most basic facts about the virus.

There are plenty of epidemiologists and geneticists who think that the Black Death and the plagues mentioned previously may actually have been a haemorrhagic virus like Crimean Congo fever/Ebola. The epidemiology does not fit a rat bourne vector at all.

I never heard of this theory before, any more info/papers you could share? Hemorrhagic fevers are nightmare fuel as far as virus's go

A great breeding ground for Corona Chan!

Chinese researcher escorted by RCMP out of level-4 lab that deals with infectious diseases.

A researcher with ties to China was recently escorted out of the National Microbiology Lab (NML) in Winnipeg amid an RCMP investigation into what's being described as a possible "policy breach."

Dr. Xiangguo Qiu, her husband Keding Cheng and an unknown number of her students from China were removed from Canada's only level-4 lab on July 5, CBC News has learned.

A Level 4 virology facility is a lab equipped to work with the most serious and deadly human and animal diseases. That makes the Arlington Street lab one of only a handful in North America capable of handling pathogens requiring the highest level of containment, such as Ebola.

Security access for the couple and the Chinese students was revoked, according to sources who work at the lab and do not want to be identified because they fear consequences for speaking out.

Sources say this comes several months after IT specialists for the NML entered Qiu's office after-hours and replaced her computer. Her regular trips to China also started being denied.

At meetings on July 8, NML staff were told the researchers are on leave for an unknown period of time. They were told not to communicate with them.

Qiu is a prominent virologist who helped develop ZMapp, a treatment for the deadly Ebola virus which killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa between 2014-2016.

She worked with Gary Kobinger, who is now a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and director of the Research Centre on Infectious Diseases at Laval University in Quebec.

Affiliated with Chinese university
Qiu is a medical doctor from Tianjin, China, who came to Canada for graduate studies in 1996. She is still affiliated with the university there and has brought in many students over the years to help with her work.

Currently head of the Vaccine Development and Antiviral Therapies section in the Special Pathogens Program at the lab, Qiu's primary field is immunology. Her research focuses on vaccine development, post-exposure therapeutics and rapid diagnostics of viruses like Ebola.

She is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Manitoba.

Cheng also works at the lab as a biologist. He has published research papers on HIV infections, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), E. coli infections and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Syndrome.

The RCMP received a referral from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) on May 24.

"Based on information received to date, the RCMP has assessed that there is no threat to public safety at this time," Robert Cyrenne said in an email to CBC News on Thursday.

PHAC is describing it as a policy breach and "administrative matter" and says the department is taking steps to "resolve it expeditiously," Eric Morrissette, the health agency's chief of media relations, said from Ottawa.

No one is under arrest or confined to their home, he added.

When asked for a response to the latest details, Morrissette said there would be no further comment "for privacy reasons."

A spokesperson for Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor said she is aware of an "administrative investigation" at the lab but has no comment.

"We can assure Canadians that there is absolutely no risk to the Canadian public and that the work of the NML continues in support of the health and safety of all Canadians," communications director Mathieu Filion said in an email Saturday. Matthew Gilmour, scientific director general of the NML, did not respond to a request for comment.

A spokesperson for the Canada Border Services Agency said the department will not confirm or deny whether anyone has been arrested or is under investigation. That information would only be public if charges are laid, Judith Gadbois-St-Cyr said in an email Thursday.

No one from the Chinese Embassy could be reached for comment.

'Microbiology can ... involve national security'
While there are few details available, experts say this could be a case of intellectual property theft or technology leakage to China.

"The National Microbiology Laboratory would have some pretty sensitive biological research material that ... could be shared either with or without authorization with foreign countries," said Gordon Houlden, director of the University of Alberta's China Institute.

"All of this is unproven, but even microbiology, sometimes especially microbiology, can have issues that involve national security."

It's something the Canadian Security Intelligence Service has already warned about, said Leah West, who teaches national security law at Carleton's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.

"Canada is facing threats from foreign governments seeking to steal intellectual property and that could include state-funded research," she said.

"The two big things I want to see is whether or not these individuals are charged with crimes by the RCMP ...that will give us a lot of information about what is really at stake here."

West is also interested in seeing how this plays out politically between Canada and the Chinese government.

Relations between the two countries have been strained since the detention of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. arrest warrant.

"China and Canada's relationship right now stems from China using espionage to advance its strategic interests, be that its security interests or its economic interests," West said. "How Canada deals with that going forward, especially given that we have two Canadians who remain in Chinese custody, will be very interesting to watch."

This isn't the first time police have investigated an incident at the lab.

In 2009, a former researcher at the lab was convicted of trying to smuggle genetic material from the Ebola virus across the Manitoba-North Dakota border.
Canadian lab immersed in RCMP probe sent Ebola and another deadly virus to China: health agency

The Canadian lab involved in a mysterious RCMP investigation around one of its most acclaimed scientists shipped samples of Ebola and another deadly virus to China earlier this year, says the Public Health Agency of Canada.
The other pathogen was henipavirus, an emerging family of bugs that inspired the Hollywood thriller Contagion, and which in real life has killed up to 100 per cent of people infected.
There are fears it could be weaponized or cause a widespread epidemic, according to a recent paper by agency researchers.
The viruses were provided to Chinese scientists as part of a “routine” sharing of infectious agents, fulfilling the National Microbiology Lab’s mandate to promote public-health research worldwide, said an agency spokesman.
Contrary to a recent news report, all appropriate precautions, including protections for the government’s intellectual property, were taken before the viruses were shipped, spokesman Eric Morrissette said.
It’s unclear if the transfer had anything to do with the reported dismissal last month of Xiangguo Qiu, a lab scientist who co-discovered a treatment for Ebola, or a related RCMP investigation.
“To advance scientific work worldwide, the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) routinely shares samples of pathogens and toxins with partner laboratories in Canada and in other countries,” said Morrissette in a statement. “These transfers follow strict protocols.”
Asked if the shipment was related to the recent, unusual events at the lab, Morrissette said the agency “continues to look into an administrative matter at the NML” and cannot comment further.

The Public Health Agency and police have shed little light generally on the situation, giving rise to much unconfirmed speculation.

Morrissette disclosed to the National Post that the shipment contained Ebola and henipavirus, but said all necessary precautions were followed.
The agency “took appropriate steps to ensure intellectual property protection, as is the case when laboratory samples are provided to other institutions,” he said. “PHAC’s intellectual property was not compromised by the sharing of this material.”

It’s unclear what intellectual property would be attached to a sample of a virus.

Why are there so many assholes visiting China? It's a communist shithole why the fuck would you want to go there? It's fucking pants on head exceptional.
These re.tards probably went there for jobs - they could have been head hunted as specialists or found a better opportunity than available at home at the time. Even niggers know, that if you just sit on your ass you get gibs from the government, so I don't understand these people either.

What I have heard so far
  • As of last night no more confirmed cases (So it remains at 5 so far)
  • However 110ish people are now being investigated
  • Around 33 people have been cleared without sign of the virus
  • CDC at this time doesn't think the Virus is spreading in the US and is being contained
  • Because of this, they think current risk of Virus for average Americans is "low", though they insist this is a evolving situation
  • CDC finally got samples from two American Victims and uploaded them to a database for other researchers to look at; The Virus matches the one the Chinese uploaded and because of this at this time it seems like the Virus HAS NOT mutated yet
  • Samples of the Virus have now been cultivated for researchers to study and are being sent out
  • A test to confirm the Virus has been made and they first are sending the kits to "critical" states before the rest and other international groups to diagnose the virus
  • CDC hints strongly a changes in airport policy in the next few days; Recommended now that all flights to the Rest of China take extra caution
  • CDC says their general estimate is that incubation rate is around 2-14 days
  • They admitted R number will just take time to confirm; Restated that "most of the articles" estimates place it around 1.5-3 which the CDC rep says doesn't make that much of a dramatic difference
  • When asked on Origin of the Virus, CDC admits they are still comparing it with other Coroanvirus' and that while it "kind of is similar to a Bat Coroanvirus, more research needs to be done"
  • Since they are still studying the Virus, they are using experience dealing with MERS and SARS to say that they think that due to a very low survivability of the Virus on surfaces that ranges in hours, the "Virus is very, very unlikely to survive on packages from Wuhan"
  • CDC has heard from China about potential asymptomatic transmission, but say so far they have seen no evidence of this and observations of the close contacts (the 110 plus cleared 33 earlier) have shown no sign of it; They say if this changes they will notify immediately on their website.
  • People in observation are identified by being at wuhan + illness
  • How Children are impacted by the Virus is still an unknown as the Virus as mostly hit adults so far, though with rumors in China about kids being infected we will have to wait and see
  • It takes around a day between putting someone on observation and getting their test results, depending on the circumstances.
  • They hope/want doctors to have the testing kit by two weeks from now
  • They are actually considering raising the rest of China to avoid non-essential travel (oh kek, China is fucked)
  • When asked what 22 states have people under observation, the CDC lady replied they are incredibly sensitive to releasing state names before confirming if the Virus is there
  • Even though direct flights from Wuhan have been stopped, many of the people they are observing now tried to shuttle to different airports, THEN enter the US; Those people are still being classified as flights from Wuhan
  • Finally, CDC congratulates the people who realized they left Wuhan a week ago, had a flu, then immediately called their local government/ CDC to inform them they might have the Virus.

Done. All in all... cautiously optimistic? Their entire linchpin seems to be that this is related to SARS and MERS so there is no asymptomatic transmission, so there is the possibility this is a modified bioweapon and the CDC gets owned; However it seems like they are about to fully crack down on flights between China and the US and if there is not asypmatic transmission they are actually partially containing it.
