Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Still no word from the CDC or WHO as yet on the most important update - is this infectious during the incubation period? Fuck what China says about it - no data, no proof.

It all depends on this. I'm checking hourly but there is nothing on any of the news feeds or the CDC site on this vital piece of information.

Any model on the virus you can throw out if it is true that it is infectious during incubation - you'll have millions of cases worldwide within 6-8 weeks if social distancing is not enforced within 5-7 days.

That's basically what the CDC said today--they currently don't have any data that suggests that it's infectious during incubation.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually going grocery shopping tomorrow and will be incorporating a lot of prep type foods and drinks alongside the minor shit I already have.

I feel like a crazy person for caring this much, but I'd rather look crazy if this amounts to nothing, than end up making my entire family and all my colleagues sick. And then dying. Or them make me sick. And them dying.
Most people my grandparents age (who remember the great depression) had pantry's, root cellars, and "deep freezes" with a month easily in them. No one called them crazy. The crazy "preper" meme seems to be a very recent thing.
Just buy stuff that can store long or freeze. Rotate stock. Plan your meals out well and your not wasting anything.

why haven't basically all world government declared martial law and fucking shut their borders and started a preemptive quarantine?
why do we always have to wait until shit hits the fan before acting? if you stop the shit from hitting the fan you won't have to clean it up afterwards

Got back from a run to get a P100. Home Depot in my area was still fully stocked , but that's probably because we haven't had any reported cases yet. I'd suggest anyone in similar areas go and do the same sooner rather than later.
Stupid question, but how long do these last? I think I have some in my nuclear preparedness bag but I use public transit everyday for 2+ hours at a time so IDK how long the filters last before they need changing.

A friend of mine also smartly suggested getting safety goggles as this shit can enter through the eyes as well.

If you don't care about protection from chemical warfare agent or other vapors, a very long time.
Just replace them when they get clogged.

The "Crazy Prepper" meme started after a combination of the fall of the Soviet Union (and thus the belief that nuclear war would never happen) and the Y2K fun times.

Even Gen-X was largely taught to have 30 days of food on hand. It wasn't that long ago that a bad storm could mean you lost power for a week or so, even in areas with a strong infrastructure. Schools had drills for earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, floods, hell, even volcanoes. It's only since about the late 1990's/early 2000's that doing that would "panic the children and make them afraid" as if the world wasn't a scary place for children right down to "what's under my bed in the dark?"

It startles me how basic preventative measures nowadays are seen as "hoarder" or "crazy survivalist" when it was just common fucking sense. It seems like just knowing first aid, which I've used quite a few times on the side of the road, is being a "crazy prepper" by so many people.

The funny thing is, the same person that calls you a crazy prepper is the first motherfucker darkening your doorstep when something happens, trying to appeal to your "but but but everyone's human and every human life is important!" senses while sobbing that you're morally and ethically bound to help them. The best part is when you help them and then when the emergency is over they go right back to mocking you when you go out to restock your supplies.

Hell, if you have the money, two deep freezes and at least 12 stock shelves are your best bet, along with inventory sheets, stock rotation, and having the wife do couponing.

The world is an interesting place, and like I found out in 1980 when my entire world as I knew it was covered in fucking volcanic ash, nobody is coming to save you.

Eating juice popsicles and looking at an ash covered world where the vehicles choked to death, the TV reception is spotty at best, the phones and power are all down will stick with you, boyos.

Speaking of those popsickles...

If you have small children as part of your family, buy the little plastic home-made popsicle things.

Here they are - 8 bucks and you can make treats for the kids in the freezer. Especially works with kids suffering from event anxiety, even autistic children.

No matter what happens, it is best to have it and not use it (well, not use it beyond having rotating groceries) than to have a dire need for it and not having it.

Thank you very much for keeping the thread up to date on this, I've been trying to find out all day if anyone but China had confirmed that it could spread during incubation. I don't understand why WHO hasn't said anything, do they not know? Or are they just going on China's word?

Not wanting to powerlevel...
But the Dr I used to work for accidently ordered more than enough stock of Ppe that he can use. I literally have enough surgical grade ppe to last through the apocalypse and then some.
Also if using ppe learn how to use it properly.
Like gloves are especially tricky.
