Will any p100 mask be a safe bet, or does it need to be OV/AG safe too?

literally in home depot, so a short non-detailed answer is fine

Oh boy

Digging through my closet I found a never opened package of N95 masks, are they worth a shit in terms of protection in a crowded subway car? Also, are they single use or can you get a couple of days out of them?

I'm Chinese myself. I've got realities such as grandparents who lives in Wuhan. They said they've been staying happy to celebrate Chinese new year. However, they can't go outside past curfew, and there's a lot of doctors or police going around. It's unsettling, but they still enjoyed Chinese new year.

Just figured it would be interesting to mention the perspective of someone in Wuhan.
I'm very glad to hear your family is weathering the storm. This can't be easy, knowing they are over there while all this happens. We're all rooting for you and your family.

Tell them everyone from Kiwi Farms wishes them good health and a good new year!

We are way ahead the original predictive model, and all the provinces have not even reported in yet:

That's 200 fewer CCP members by mid-Wednesday. Good riddance.

While we know the real numbers are much higher, we should be celebrating each time WuFlu hits a new milestone. 200 is the first plateau.

As I understand it N95s don't filter finely enough to catch the Wu-Flu

Are N95 Masks Really Effective against the flu?
A little online research will reveal that the flu virus is .17 microns in size. Clearly smaller than even N100 masks can filter out. However, it is critical to understand that the flu virus does not float in the air by itself. The flu virus is transported from patient to patient on droplets of excretions from sneezing and coughing. These particles are typically 5 microns or larger. When a sick patient wears a respirator, the respirator can be very effective at preventing infectious material from leaving the patients body, and when worn by healthy individuals, it prevents inhalation of said material. More importantly, wearing a mask is a excellent way of preventing the user from rubbing or touching their mouth or nose, which is a very high risk factor. At the end of the day will an N95 mask guarantee to protect you from the Flu? No. But it can substantially reduce your risk or receiving or transmitting the disease.

When do Dust Masks/Filters wear out?
In general, dust masks and filters should be discarded after each "encounter" or "procedure". The risk of contamination can also be heightened by removing and applying the mask multiple times. In general, once removed, the Dust Mask should be disposed of. Additionally, proper hand hygiene should be observed when touching a potentially contaminated mask. Further concern should be given to cross-contamination when wearing masks into different rooms or areas. Regardless of usage, masks should be discarded when used beyond 8 hours, and careful review and testing should be performed in regards to hazardous chemicals/particles.

Wuhan duck neck (brand) admitting their ducks are locally sourced, not from Wuhan thus fake... lol China.
This is the sort of thing that makes me feel a little better after reading yet another account of how the Chinese have fucked a foreign business somehow with their shady practices. They fuck each other just as hard.

Canadian lab immersed in RCMP probe sent Ebola and another deadly virus to China: health agency

The Canadian lab involved in a mysterious RCMP investigation around one of its most acclaimed scientists shipped samples of Ebola and another deadly virus to China earlier this year, says the Public Health Agency of Canada.
The other pathogen was henipavirus, an emerging family of bugs that inspired the Hollywood thriller Contagion, and which in real life has killed up to 100 per cent of people infected.
There are fears it could be weaponized or cause a widespread epidemic, according to a recent paper by agency researchers.
The viruses were provided to Chinese scientists as part of a “routine” sharing of infectious agents, fulfilling the National Microbiology Lab’s mandate to promote public-health research worldwide, said an agency spokesman.
Contrary to a recent news report, all appropriate precautions, including protections for the government’s intellectual property, were taken before the viruses were shipped, spokesman Eric Morrissette said.
It’s unclear if the transfer had anything to do with the reported dismissal last month of Xiangguo Qiu, a lab scientist who co-discovered a treatment for Ebola, or a related RCMP investigation.
“To advance scientific work worldwide, the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) routinely shares samples of pathogens and toxins with partner laboratories in Canada and in other countries,” said Morrissette in a statement. “These transfers follow strict protocols.”
Asked if the shipment was related to the recent, unusual events at the lab, Morrissette said the agency “continues to look into an administrative matter at the NML” and cannot comment further.

The Public Health Agency and police have shed little light generally on the situation, giving rise to much unconfirmed speculation.

Morrissette disclosed to the National Post that the shipment contained Ebola and henipavirus, but said all necessary precautions were followed.
The agency “took appropriate steps to ensure intellectual property protection, as is the case when laboratory samples are provided to other institutions,” he said. “PHAC’s intellectual property was not compromised by the sharing of this material.”

It’s unclear what intellectual property would be attached to a sample of a virus.

This is fucking horrifying. I trust the PRC about as far as I can heft a truck with my bare hands. They've got their people and their claws into fucking everything, right across the world, committed to corporate espionage and tech stealing and then we've got the whole backdoor crap built into Chinese goods. I've been watching videos about how they treat all foreigners there too as inherently dangerous and suspicious no matter how lng they've been there or how much Chinese family they have, and track them constantly in the manner of a police state (including late night visits to check up on them and being followed from day to day), and it contrasts so interestingly with the howling all Chinks do the moment they face the slightest scrap of anything that even smells vaguely of discrimination abroad. Right now I am up for turfing the lot of them back to the homeland until they can prove they're not a state asset of some kind.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually going grocery shopping tomorrow and will be incorporating a lot of prep type foods and drinks alongside the minor shit I already have.

I feel like a crazy person for caring this much, but I'd rather look crazy if this amounts to nothing, than end up making my entire family and all my colleagues sick. And then dying. Or them make me sick. And them dying.
A little advice I was given awhile back (this is of course assuming that shit doesn't hit the fan in the next few weeks), don't panic buy large quantities at once, while unlikely it could make you target later down the line if a desperate neighbor sees you. Instead work in like $30-$50 in water and long lasting food every shopping trip over the next few weeks. This both helps keep a low profile and should help you organize you stock in a way that you can easily separate older goods from newer so you can just switch out and eat older stock before it expires during normal everyday life. I talked to a good friend who worked in the medical field most of his life and he thinks that if it does become 'spanish flu 2 oriental boogalo' we won't know until maybe mid February or early March so we have some time.

thank you, this i honestly very informative

Just got in. The city I visit for groceries, etc is 30 minutes from one of the cities where a virus victim turned up. No one seems bothered yet. I hit the thrift store for cheap goggles (2 for 1.99) and basic (still packaged) water filters, then on to Freddy's where I got bleach, handwipes, etc and some N 95's (not many, but if this hits, I ain't going anywhere If I can help it). People might want to check groceries and farm stores with hardware sections, as they are not the first places people think of to buy this stuff.

I hope this is a mistranslation but I noticed something about the Chinese reports. For example:

Capture.PNG

It says "1291 new cases of pneumonia with the new coronavirus infection".

If the translation is right, they are only counting the cases with pneumonia? You don't necessarily always get pneumonia and pneumonia cases are pretty much always considered serious. What about the cases without pneumonia?

Thank god for Northern Tools. The local Northern Tools store is right next to one of the three major Chinatowns in the area, so I was not optimistic I would be able to find anything left there, since even the Home Depot and Walgreens further out were stripped bare.

I bought out all 4 of those nice $30 P100 3M respirators with detachable filters they had left, since I have 4 close family members (2 elderly) who will be traveling overseas by plane very soon and couldn't wait for Amazon delivery. I also have set them up with 2 boxes of latex gloves and an infrared laser thermometer. I trust them to buy hand sanitizer and goggles, since those won't be running out before they leave. They were originally planning to just go with those shitty regular surgical masks, but I hope I was able to convince them to seriously use the P100s as their primary protection. I'm afraid they won't take me serious though, since they seem to think N95 is good enough because the news they watch said so.

I'm thinking of going to go back to Northern Tools tomorrow to see if they restock with those $30 P100s, so I can give those family members some extras to take with. The store had a couple of $60 P100s left, but I think they are not a good deal. For myself and other family members who are staying in US, I wait on the Amazon delivery of 6x $25 P100 3M respirators that should come before the end of the week.

I'm going to have to dig up my old chemistry lab goggles, but other than that I think I'm good on gloves and bleach wipes, and I think hand sanitizer should be easy enough to find.

Also I'm thinking we should start a P100 selfie thread. Everyone take photo of themselves in P100 and brandishing their bugout/boogaloo loadout.

Here's what I don't understand.

Why not making emergency medical warm sites instead of taking two weeks to build entire hospitals?
China has this weird fetish with showing off how fast they can build fancy shit on a large scale.

Just look at how they crowed about rotating some building. Was neat but big fuckin deal.

Welp it was nice knowing you all. It reminds me of SARS all over again seeing all our china people in masks again
