I remember the cold war. Used to have nightmares sometimes about nuclear attacks imminent and the early warning sirens in my city in times when things boiled a bit over here and there sometimes or the soviet union got erratic in it's last years. One time a group of sirens malfunctioned in my area and went off at night apropos of nothing, that was fun. So much that I'll never forget it. Couldn't even jump on the internet to figure out if they finally did it and ended the world. Only had a pocket radio. Then the various coup attempts in about-to-dissolve soviet union and young russia that were also scary because they brought about a lot of uncertainty. Most here didn't witness this is my guess, even a young russian woman I know never even heard about the latter. It's funny how quickly all that fear was forgotten, while it was dominating minds, arts, and culture back then. My guess it'll go an equal way here until the next super-AIDS, but it really is a joke in comparison and I just wouldn't concern myself as much as some people in this thread do. You can't do anything anyways. If it's hyper-ebola, you're fucked. If it's less than that, it depends on your own luck and certain common sense rules everyone knows about. Everything beyond that is out of your control. What I figured out back then is that if the world ends, a few cans of beans and a bunch of water is not gonna make your life afterwards worthwhile. Might as well not stress out about something like that.

Basically this is a situation of eat drink be merry for tomorrow you shall die.

Call me brutal… IF our govt. decided to help people with evacuation, my caveat as a Very Important Govt. Person, (in theory!), would be that they sign off on staying in quarantine in a designated facility for 14 - 18 days. No exceptions, We have quarantine laws we can invoke. ANYBODY being pulled out of China should be required to stay in quarantine.

I knew a British dude some years ago who managed to catch chicken pox on his trip home to the UK from Japan. He developed the spots on the plane, realised only then he was infected and landed with his face covered in them. Tried to keep his head down and his hoodie up and get through immigration/customs. Failed. They took one look at the state of him, took him aside and he spent the next two weeks forcibly detained in a hospital quaratine unit unable to communicate with the rest of the world until he was better and cleared of having some tropical illness. It's good to be a serious country about incoming plague carriers.

I read that the mainland Chinese are become scared of the Hubei people, the Hong Kongers are become scared of mainlanders and the rest of the world is becoming scared of Chinese/East Asian.

Honestly, this is disheartening, but what else are going to do? Saying "trust the authorities and don't panic" isn't going to cut it.

At least a few private schools in Toronto, (Montessori), with a fair number of Chinese students have made it policy that anyone who travelled to China must provide proof, (in the form of tickets/boarding passes), of their return date & keep their kids home for... I think 17? days. I saw 1 such parent interviewed earlier today. She had no problems with that & seemed to completely understand where that came from.

That's the problem with politicizing & "SJW'ing" every bloody thing under the sun. Reasonable, prudent measures of any sort; especially in the face of a POTENTIAL world-wide major health issue, should never have to pass through a filter of political correctness.

It's just like the big boy Communists, which political ideology and public relation trumps any technical competency and all considerations of reality.

The real sad part is that everything are trying to prevent will become true because of their (in)actions. They wanted to prevent the spread of panic, mistrust and "fake news", but guess what we are getting? They wanted to prevent all the economic loses from quarantines and border closings, but guess what we are getting? They wanted prevent a rise in racism and xenophobia, but guess what we are getting?

Caught up with friend who had family in Wuhan, some anecdotal info:

• Family had left Wuhan weeks early but is still being isolated to their airbnb? room in another province because they came from Wuhan, they get food brought to them and there doesn't seem to be any problems for them given how casually they talked about it.
• He believes media has really overblown the situation, it's more a problem of stupid people doing stupid stuff regarding the outbreak.
• Overall, didn't seem that distressed over the outbreak and more frustrated at the whole situation.

I discussed the outbreak with some other people, no real concern about it coming here and doing a lot of damage, more just discussion about how being in China probably sucks and that one person I talked to had a friend about to leave to study abroad in an area near China that has now had their flight cancelled and no real idea for how long.
