It’s so sad, but it takes a long, long time to process and understand what’s happened when it’s done to you by someone like Piggy. It’s his mother and she’s (hopefully) not doing anything overt like molesting him, so it’s a lot more confusing to a kid as to how to name it and reject it. Plus, it’s your mom- facing the fact that your parent has hurt you is really difficult. He might eventually be like “I hate my mom and think she’s a bitch and don’t visit for Christmas” but that’s different than facing the whole truth. A lot of misplaced guilt and shame (but I enjoyed the attention...but she didn’t hit me or anything...) stands in the way.

That’s how you end up self-soothing with sex/drugs/food, because you know something is deeply wrong but you don’t know what it is and you assume it’s YOU. That you’re inherently fucked up, broken, and an outsider, feeling alienated from things like community & family. He might run with that discomfort & alienation and troon out & overdose, or he might run with it and drop out from public view and become an overachiever in college & graduate with an engineering degree (ultra-). But afaik most people don’t disclose abuse until they’re around 40, and those are the clear-cut cases. It’s not looking bright for his future or for her getting called out.
