Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Ok, but why are all the deaths happening in China? Thus far outside China, no-one of the infected people have dropped dead - to the contrary, some of them have already recovered and most are reported to be in good shape. Most likely this is because rest of the world has superior medical facilities compared to China, but still. If this is bioweapon experiment gone wild, it's really not very effective bioweapon.

It's true that China is acting really dramatically, but do consider that it might also be because they have had lots of internal tensions lately with the Hong Kong boogaloo etc. It might be that the CCP is afraid that if they don't flex their muscles now, the people might start to question whether they still hold the Mandate Of Heaven to rule - after all, the Celestial Bureucracy is known for making it's displeasure known through all kinds of disasters in the past.

It’s most likely not specifically a bio weapon. Just some Corona Virus research project that got loose. Somebody got bit by a monkey in the level 4 lab, and simply left for the day. Probably stopping to shop etc on his way home. Chinese research into really bad shit doesn’t always have a specific purpose such as weaponizaction. Look at the idiot trying to create genetically enhanced children for no real reason beyond he wants to And will not be told no. There is not always a real good risks/benefits feedback loop in China with regards to scientific research. They are so programmed against offering negative feedback or criticism that few are willing to raise their hand and say “maybe creating mutant vampire superbabies might not be the best idea ever?” For all we know these idiots might have been hellbent on discovering enough about Coronavirus’s to cure the common cold. That they might create a pandemic super plague in the process is not something anyone is likely to point out For fear of being impolite and troublesome.

More news from the aussies in terms of what constitutes infection through "close contact".

This doesn't really make sense. I get that if you just walk past someone who's sick you're probably fine (as long as they don't cough in your face), but "close contact over a period of time" doesn't connect with some of the cases. Like there was a bus driver in Japan who got it from a Chinese tourist riding on his bus. But I guess "close contact" and "period of time" are conveniently unclear terms. How close of contact? How long of time?

So when should I start

I‘m sticking with Winnie the Flu

Here's my contribution:

I said this before, but it was like 100 pages back, so I'll say it again.

Bioweapons are NOT all "ACHOO-BLARGHDEAD" ala Captain Tripps, the T-Virus, the Walking Dead. Most of them are EXACTLY what the novel-corona-virus is.

You have three categories for them, stemming from the Cold War doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction's three-phase plan where you not only want to kill the enemy, but kill EVERYTHING FOREVER, including your own shit so they can't have it.

First is the kind that jumps out of the alley and ass-rapes you, usually coming in Industrial Strength and Bargain Bin, so that the symptoms and stages are confused. The MAD versions are highly communicable, fast acting, and BLARGH DEAD right where you're sitting. Those ones wipe out everyone it comes into contact with, allowing them to only survive long enough to stagger around in delirium and infect other people with even the corpses being infectious (best for when the dogs and rats eat the corpse to spread it). We're talking real world ender shit. Stuff like weaponized bubonic plague type shit. The lethaler and more communicable, the fucking better. Plus, visible symptoms are great to cause panic and fear in the populace and hurry the collapse of the infrastructure. It's even better if it can be like e.coli and hang around forever in animals so that now even food is denied to the poor bastards who survived, because fuck you, that's why.

Then you have the "You're all gonna die, just very very slowly" that are related to the first type, but are designed to take much longer to kill you and leaves some poor bastards alive (preferably all fucked up with scarred hearts and lungs and damaged livers and kidneys, hell, even fever damaged brains if you can pull it off) as carriers. You want to pair it with a "FUCK YOU!" version of itself, so that doctors don't know which is which based on symptoms, which causes the medical system to collapse and the civilian population to freak the fuck out and start burning motherfuckers alive. These two are related and are Four Horseman quality weapons.

Lastly, you have dehabilitating agents. These are where your options come in. Fast acting from asymptomatic to symptoms or not. If not, you want it to be communicable EARLY in the symptomatic phase or at the end of the incubation phase, preferably the middle. OR you want it with a low communicability in order to control it. All of that is just for how the delivery and spread works, what you're really after is this...

Decent asymptomatic incubation stage with communicability in the end of incubation. Mucus and bodily fluid suspension. Hard hitting symptomatic stage. An R0 of at least 3 but no more than 7 in order to keep it from spreading like wildfire.

What this does is the following, and why it's the preferred bioweapon for Total War without the MAD component.

It keeps the troops in the barracks
Sickens political and military leaders
Stops industry
Keeps the citizenry in their homes
Collapses the medical system (This allows you to roll in and "save" them)
Collapses the shipping system (Preventing food and supplies from being shipped)
Causes power, water, phone, and internet interruptions
Divides the citizenry
Makes the government appear weak and ineffective.
Disrupts trade as ships and planes are quarentined (this also leads to a couple of "death ships" out there on the water for later fun)

You spread rumors that the military and political leaders as well as the rich have been given access to a vaccine, mainly to cause civil unrest.

You deliberately enable some of the asymptomatic who are close to communicable to slip cordons and reach other nations in order to force those nations to close the border to the target country and other allies to close airline travel. No allied troops will want to enter the area to avoid sickness.

You want the disease to last a week to two weeks during the symptomatic phase, putting a further drain on the medical system but ALSO you want it to be able to be treated at home by staying home, getting rest, and plenty of fluids, thus confining the citizenry to their homes willingly, unwilling to trust a collapsing medical system.

You want a slow mutation rate, since viruses (the successful ones) DON'T kill their hosts, and over time the disease gets less and less lethal until it's treated as just another "Winter flu" bug.

So, tell me again how this is a shitty bioweapon, unless you mean the full blown "BECAUSE FUCK YOU, THAT'S WHY!" versions.
You assume the CCP is competent and smart; they aren't. They probably stole it and one of their mong workers at the biohazard lab took a dead bat home to make delcious bat soup to show off to the other mongs and brag about how smart and successful he is. : "I, Chang, working at the biohazzard lab who can afford bat virus soup, am better than you, lowly peasant!"

Wouldn’t it be fitting that a Chinese manufactured bioweapon works just like the rest of things made in China? It works for a while but then fails before it can perform the way it’s supposed to.

China Will Admit International Experts to Help Contain Coronavirus Outbreak
As W.H.O. coordinates scientific teams, federal officials plan to expand screening of travelers from China to 20 ports of entry in the U.S.

If this is late, bring in the late ratings.

After repeatedly declining assistance from international health officials, Chinese authorities agreed on Tuesday to permit teams of experts coordinated by the World Health Organization to visit China to help contain the growing coronavirus outbreak.

Researchers are racing to make a coronavirus vaccine.

The news arrived as federal health officials announced expanded screening measures for passengers from China at 20 ports of entry to the United States.
Other travel restrictions have not been ruled out, officials said, though so far only five people in the United States are known to have been infected. Americans are now discouraged from traveling to any part of China.

At a news briefing in Washington on Tuesday, Alex M. Azar II, the secretary of health and human services — who had just reiterated the offer of scientific and logistical assistance — said he was “delighted” that China was accepting.
The Chinese authorities agreed to work with experts from other countries after a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the W.H.O.

The W.H.O. praised China’s response to the outbreak, including its rapid identification of the virus and its “openness to sharing information with W.H.O. and other countries.”

Though the outbreak is continuing in China, federal officials maintained that the risk of infection remains low in the United States.
“Right now, there is no spread of this virus in our communities at home,” Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said at the news briefing.

“The coming days and weeks are likely to bring more cases, including the possibility of person-to-person spread,” he added. “Our goal is to contain this virus and prevent sustained spread of the virus in our country.”
The C.D.C. has already been screening arrivals from Wuhan, China — epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak — for symptoms of infection at five airports.

But the agency also oversees a comprehensive quarantine system, including permanent quarantine stations at 20 airports and land border crossings that are staffed with medical officers who routinely screen ill passengers and decide whether they can enter the United States.
Those stations will be equipped and staffed to perform screenings specifically for the Wuhan coronavirus, officials said at the briefing.
“Americans should know this is a potentially very serious public health threat, but at this point Americans should not worry for their own safety,” Mr. Azar said. “This is a very fast-moving, constantly changing situation.”
American scientists are eager to review data that Chinese health officials have said indicates the virus may be transmitted from an infected individual to other people even before the patient shows symptoms.
So far, the C.D.C. has not been able to confirm that transmissions may occur while patients are asymptomatic, Dr. Redfield said.

It’s a question that could have implications for the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus, and affect screening measures and other public health steps that must be taken, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Asymptomatic transmission is not believed to be a large factor in viral outbreaks. “The driver of an outbreak has always been a symptomatic person,” Dr. Fauci said. “An epidemic is not driven by asymptomatic carriers.”
There was no evidence that people were contagious before they showed symptoms during outbreaks of other coronavirus diseases, like SARS and MERS, which might suggest that such transmission is unlikely with the new coronavirus.
Dr. Redfield said the C.D.C. could not rule out additional measures as scientists learned more about the new coronavirus.
“All options have to be on the table, including travel restrictions,” he said. “But diseases are not terribly good at respecting borders.”

I remember reading that the droplets or germs, or what you call it, are too heavy for the air, so the person pretty much has to cough and sneeze right on your face to get it. So that confirms the close contact thing, yes?

Nah, obviously Boris means to let the virus run wild through the UK, let it kill of the SNP, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Greens, proclaim the eternal Mandate of Bojo and re-conquer the British Empire, heralding a thousand years of world dominance atop the smouldering ruins of the old order.
Isn't Boris' base mainly boomers who might actually die from Corona-chan (assuming it gets outside of London)?

how does wind effect this? i live in a city by the sea and it's usually pretty windy

A sneeze can travel around 2 meters leaving a mist that is suspended in the air for several seconds if you are in busy area you can easily walk through someones cough and sneeze and inhale some of it.

In case you want to keep track of the counts, this is an OK one to use. Oddly enough, total counts seem to be either hard to come by or have really disparate numbers.

Now for some humor, the best medicine.
