Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I would imagine the docs treating them have read the lancet paper describing the patient and looked at the sequence analysis and gone ‘right, well not steroids then. Ummm.,, what we got? Shove some tamiflu in there. Bugger it, let’s try the Aluvia as well, I mean she’s going to die otherwise and they did say that spike sequence was a bit like HIV...’

Thailand Sees Good Result from Using Drug Mixture on Coronavirus

"The patient’s condition significantly improved within 48 hours after the medical team decided to use antiviral drugs originally used for HIV and influenza in his treatment"
I like the qualifiers saying 'they aren't cured, but it slows the disease'. Dark thought: So does it heal or are you on antiretrovirals for life? I can only hope the illnesses in the west will give more insight.

They have been sending Chinese fentanyl to America for at least 4 years, the more you know. Cheaper than growing opium and processing it to get heroin.

damn I had this happen yesterday, I wanted to impress people with my knowledge of coronavirus thanks to the farms and all I got were weird stares and called a conspiracy theorist, mind you these people were physicians or biomedicine grads who had not done any reading clearly but I felt embarrassed and just wanted to come back home and keep informing myself of this situation. Reminder to myself: keep the sperging for the farms.
I'm a voracious internet person and have some odd places I visit to capture the 'zeitgeist' as it were. I was shocked that none of them had this on the radar even a week or so ago and the few who are posting it up now are kinda blase...imagine sites dedicated to questioning PTB saying, 'naw, 'ts cool mang, CDC say it just a cold dude.' I dunno what's going on, but I feel your frustration.

Okay, this might be super dumb to bring it up here - but could this be because of this?

Or is this just a coincidence in this case?

When you search for "coronavirus" on twitter in Canada, you get a big box directing you to the public health agency. (My first search was for "coronavirus HIV" and I thought it might have been trying to head off conspiracy theories, but I took off the HIV and it was still the same.) Anyone else get similar PSAs in other countries?

Yes, I do.

I long for the day that automatic doors are feasible everywhere. I am a strict handwasher but other people aren't and doorknobs have to be some of the germiest places imaginable. I don't use public restrooms unless I absolutely have too but there's so many places that you still need to touch doors. I feel like colds and flus / other bugs could be massively brought down in number if all doors were automatic, or the apparatus to open/close/lock them could be foot operated.

Same with money. Anytime you touch money you should wash or have hand sanitizer around.
Gloves and long sleeves are a good way to lessen contact with disgusting things like money and door handles. Sure, someone might think you have OCD or are paranoid, but whatever. The weirdo in gloves and a jacket will get the last laugh come flu season.

Yes, and one of the drugs used for HIV was originally developed for cancer. Lots of drugs can be used for multiple diseases.

Thalidomide, a tranquilizer given to pregnant mothers primarily in the UK in the 1960s caused so much misery by causing horrible birth defects. Useless, right? Nope: turns out the "damage" it does to cells makes it a good drug to treat leprosy (although there are other, better drugs that have been invented since then).

The Chad Bikers once related a story (sadly I've no idea what video of theirs it was in) where they discovered a restaurant which boasted about serving live monkey brain. What they'd do is strap the monkey down and wheel it to the table, then use hammers to crack open the skull and slowly extract the brain matter while the animal was still breathing, then eat it. I'm not even kidding.
If this isn't just an urban legend, it's far from a common delicacy and more like "something done at one restaurant decades ago." Seriously I've looked for awhile for evidence of this happening and I think it's probably bullshit or it happened really rarely a long time ago.

I always wash my hands first thing on entering the house after being in public, work or shopping, whatever and I don't do stupid shit like nail biting which means I'm shoving filthy fingers in my mouth - wish I could say the same for others. I;ve managed to get through whole flu seasons without picking it up due to handwashing properly and sanitizing any keyboard I had to use at work. Keyboards. If you share them due to that dumb hotdesking trend, sanitize them with alcohol before use. Daily. The number of people who don't wash their hands after the toilet, pick their noses, bite their nails .. any of these surfaces are covered in their snot flecks and faecal germs.

A person with a decent immune system and good personal habits is pretty ok under normal circumstances and we don't want to santize ourselves to the point we have no natural immunity built up and a cold will kill us like the Martians in HG Wells .... having said that I've found the worst thing for picking up infections is being anywhere in a closed environments (with unhygienic morons especially) for an extended time. Open plan offices. Fuck's sake. Who invented that shit? And if you are around small children, or work with them, prepare for the worst.

North Korea closes borders. Taiwan stops visas for Chinese citizens. Mongolia shuts down border. Russia closes the border and bans flights. Singapore shuts the border to Chinese.

What the fuck Vice and Twitter told me wanting to ban the Chinese is yellow peril and Orientalism. It's so sad how Asians have such internalized racist views! Have they even read Robin Diangelo?

In Mongolia's case because of their relationship with China, I don't think they'd have closed their border unless they were certain that China would be okay with it. I tend to agree with Null, I think China are using the virus as an opportunity for an exercise, to gauge their own response to a more serious threat and see the international reactions to a possible pandemic within their borders.

Also regarding the cancellation of flights and foreigners leaving the country, I don't think that's something that particularly bothers either the government or the Chinese public. Anyway I would expect that in the next few weeks the Chinese will start to flex diplomatically, China isn't a country that most other nations want to be on bad terms with.

This is an alarming thought at first, but those 500 deaths/day were gonna happen anyway. And are still happening... and likely rising as so much of the medical care is diverted to the Corona patients.
So the 'bodies piling up in the streets' factor is because, yah it's significantly more than the normal 500/day they are already experiencing. There is an abnormal strain on the system.
And it's not just flu deaths on top of that normal 500; it's also deaths by other causes that failed to get potentially life-saving treatment because the patient couldn't get adequate medical care at an overwhelmed hospital--or even get to the hospital in the first place. Diabetic complications, heart attacks, severe asthma attacks, accidents--there are going to be a lot of additional non-flu deaths that would otherwise not have occurred.

Nope. Just tech and video game stuff for me. Wouldn't be surprised if there's an attempt to downplay this in the US. All downplaying will do is encourage people to get suspicious and wonder if there's some Deus Ex type stuff going on.

The downplaying is likely because China has their chopsticks in every media outlet. This would probably not be getting downplayed if China wasn't throwing money at every company with a pulse.

Yes, I do.
