While my friend was rambling on and on about how we're entering an unprecedented new age of totalitarian dystopia, I was sitting there smiling. He seemed on-edge, stressed out, real doomsayer vibes...and meanwhile I was feeling alright. Sure, maybe I'm not in the greatest place in my life, maybe I'm not where I expected I would be when I was a kid, but I'm happy. I have a loving family, attend a great church, and live in an area that I couldn't really imagine leaving. It's just crazy to me that someone could look around and see gloom and doom everywhere when there's so much to be happy about. You can burn yourself out easily when you're teeming with rage or hysteria all the time. That's just not me.
So yeah, thanks for your stories, they've made me feel better. And on the off chance my friend comes around, I'll welcome him with open arms. Life's too short to hold a grudge.
Also, fuck Reddit.
This reminds me of a dinner I had with a now former friend of about a decade...we started talking about politics after I made a comment about some idiots posting guillotine memes and he launched into a full-blown rant about how people like him are next to go into the camps, we’re on the brink of a civil war, Trump is going to kill us all, and I would calmly ask things like “so what if Trump doesn’t get removed from office and gets elected again? It doesn’t really seem like things have fallen apart yet...” Oh, and we’re having dinner in an upscale restaurant in a nice neighborhood in the city so clearly that whole world falling apart narrative he was spewing is even more laughable. We used to be fairly similar politically and it’s not like I’ve suddenly gone all right-wing either, but I’m tired of the left’s absolute insanity and lack of basing their policies in any facts. Anyway, so he kept getting more flustered by my questions until finally the projection came out when he blurted “YOU’RE CLEARLY BOTHERED BY THIS BECAUSE IT’S ALL YOU TALK ABOUT” and I responded that we don’t even see each other that often and we’d talked about it a couple times, then he said “OK BYE THEN” and stormed out of the restaurant while I sat there thinking it was the most surreal dinner I’d ever had. Haven’t heard from him since and it doesn’t bother me one bit.
