You know, minor PL, but I have an obese (330lb at 5'7") acquaintance who also exclusively swims for "exercise". I wonder if it's because they just float there in the water and feel like they're doing something.

Swimming is a safe exercise for fat people because they aren't putting pressure on their joints, which is a risk with activities like running/jogging.
