And there is no context. Not within the comic, anyway. The only reason we know they’re contacts is because Labelle explained it outside of the strip.
Labelle really has no idea how teenagers work. They love being outsiders. Look at goths, emos, punks - there’s nothing a teenager wants more than to be different and exciting, to suffer in a cool and sexy way.

Labelle understands teenagers perfectly, he never matured past that age. He just denies it because it goes against his narrative. It's really perfect how much each wannabe edgy trend mirrors each other. Same as any other edgy movement, troons want you to believe that they are miserable because the world is against them, not because of their own mentality. They want you to believe they are unique and special, even though they do the same things as everyone else.
