Shelves in America are about to take an ass-whipping from anyone here who's paying attention. My household is preparing as I type this from the same bullshit AFB who's keeping human pitri dishes on the loosest 'lockdown' I've ever seen in my life.
Please buy yourselves chest freezers if you haven't already got them; they need about 24 hours of not moving before you plug them in and get them started due to the Freon that makes them work. Once they're good to turn on, keep them on their absolute coldest setting at all times with several bottles of water lining the bottom. Buy up LARGE amounts of boneless chicken breasts and lean ground beef to divvy into quart freezer storage bags (1-3 chicken breasts per). Go fucking apeshit on the frozen veggies and canned fruits (preferably in 100% juice). Load up on rice and beans as other Kiwis have said, get plenty of purified drinking water; "spring water" is just tapwater and home filters don't actually purify anything. Dry pasta and shelf-stable sauces will be your new best friends if shit does hit the fan regarding food supply. Do not underestimate the usefulness of shelf-stable broths and seasonings; they can help you to keep your head screwed on straight if you're stuck eating pantry foods and the same meats for more than just a few days.
Even if the food-prep for a potential US epidemic turns out to be unnecessary, the foods you just stocked up on won't be going bad anytime soon and your new chest freezer will give you a newfound opportunity and appreciation for sales on meats at the supermarket. They also keep that discount Valentine's Day chocolate perky and fresh for multiple years. Everything will stay fresh for a ridiculously long time if you keep your chest freezer on its coldest possible setting.
8:56 a.m. CDC says Americans should prepare for virus:
With coronavirus now spreading community-wide in multiple countries, including parts of Europe, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the world is on the cusp of a pandemic and advises that Americans begin preparing now for the virus to circulate here. “Ultimately we expect we will see community spread in this country,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases with the CDC. “It’s not a question of if, but when, and how many people in this country will have severe illness.” She said the world was “closer to definition of pandemic.”
