Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Thank you Dr. Purr, very cool.

It would be glorious beyond words if this outbreak lead to the end of the PRC. One of the most vile, authoritarian super states, rendered virtually non-existent and shattered into a series of different countries.

If that happened, then it would restore my hope for humanity's future.

An economic recession that gets the Dems in the White House would simultaneously destroy it.

With that said, I'm shifting gears right quick.

Now that I've seen what the Coronavirus is doing in developed countries with proper hygiene, namely South Korea and Italy, my expectations have been set for what will happen once it takes off here in the states. Our world leaders are too apathetic and self centered to do things that might actually save lives like closing the fucking borders, cause it'll hurt the money coming into their bank accounts. Also because because they're listening to a puppet of the CCP. When they finally do something about it it'll be too little too late. The DOW's dropped by over a thousand points yesterday, and it's fallen by almost 900 more points today. So we're looking at a very possible recession caused by corona-chan. I'm beginnning to take this seriously now, slight powerlevel; I'm pretty sure that I could survive the coronavirus, however, one of my relatives has a weakened immune system and has to take medication for a joint disease.

Not good.

Depends on what cheap means.

You can stock up on Sardines, Ramen, Tuna, etc for like $0.11 per serving. That will get you through a couple weeks for under $100. Also get the 5 gal water bottles, just make a wall of them for whatever may come. You could need to boil your own water, those jugs can be used to capture condensation.

I bought 2,000 high-end MREs at the start of this for $4 per serving. This covers the people I care about for a month.

What you really want to stock up on is guns. Food is no good if your neighbors can steal it. Figure out what the gun laws are in your area and buy whatever has the shortest waiting period along with as much ammo as possible. I'm not a gun guy, but I understand Chinese-made AKs are very popular right now. There's a secondary market of people buying metal plates for rifle butts and bayonet holders that fit them popping up in various places.

The US Army published a Survival Guide in the 1940s which is excellent. Find a paper copy and tuck it away just in case you lose Internets. Covers survival food and capturing fresh water, which are necessary if you need to rough it. You should probably make sure you have a tent and a sleeping bag while you're at it.

There's a gun show coming up in my area, so I plan on buying a couple of firearms. I've got a few thousand dollars to spare on that. If Corona-chan goes on a stripper grand tour here in the U.S., and we end up getting bands of crazed looters, could my gun-loving kiwis recommend what guns would be best for home-defense? Jet Fuel Johnny seems to know more about survival than Bear-fucking-Grylls, so I'd like to see what advice our favorite survivalist has about fortifying your house for defending against an armed invasion by African looters looking to steal the food you've got stocked up. Thanks for the survival manuals.
Godspeed Gentlemen. :semperfidelis:

EDIT:

Thanks for the replies! Strangely enough, I was already planning on getting guns and training with them in a few months. Mainly because of how things in my neighborhood are getting dicey, and on the minute chance that riots break out near me after the 2020 election. The situation with the Wu-flu caused me to speed up my timeline. I've got a shooting range with classes in mind too, haven't signed up yet though, will do so after after I get my guns. The advice of folks on the farms on which guns were the best to have, and how to go about diving into the field of using rifles, pistols, and shotguns was certainly worth reading/having.

It may be an overreaction to the Coronavirus outbreak, but firearms are still good to have, provided the person who has them is trained and knows how to use them. Even if it turns out to be not so bad, then hey, I've still got a means of home defense, also this is America. The Second Amendment is damn awesome. As for corona-chan, I don't expect things to start getting unpleasent in the U.S. until Mid-Late March. Odds are that the DOW will keep dropping, at least until they finish moving production overseas to other countries. Perhaps it might not get so bad the country will shut down, but it's worth preparing for the worst.

Better to be prepared for a disaster, and not have to endure it; Than to be caught off-guard by one and have to survive it.

Self-diagnosing and self-treating with antibiotics or any prescription drug is not clever. We have doctors and pharmacists for a reason - these subjects are complicated, generally require education you do not have and people acting wilfully naive like peasants in various third world shitholes and just self-diagnosing/self-dosing with the attitude of 'oh that drug there, I know that name' and gobbling down some without any real knowledge of what they're doing, appropriate dosage, side-effects, drug interactions, contraindications for pre-existing conditions or even if they actually have what they think they have is what leads to both antibiotic resistance and poor individual health outcomes. It's like buying meds online from India or elsewhere because they'e cheaper, you really have no idea what you're doing or what you're buying.
Really using antibiotics for a virus will do shit other than make your immune system more compromised by killing the good flora and having yeast take over. The best bet if you can't go to the hospital with wu flu is to rest and drink as much water as possible. Point is its just stupid to take antibiotics with a virus.

I want to take a moment to mention how much I hate the name "covid-19". Its the sort if name a committee of commies would call something. If i am going to die, I want it to be by something with a bitching name like the "Black Death".
If it makes you feel better it sounds close to corvid, the scientific family name for crows. That's tangentially related to murder (red lung kicks ass tho).

Corona-chan is probably Brazil now. They're still waiting for the confirmation of the second test.

Just after the Carnival.

We're so fucked.

Don't worry guys: Corona Chan isn't the real problem:

It's flu, ebola, and racism!

COVID-19 has already surpassed the death tolls of SARS and MERS, over 2,000 people as this is written, with little signs of abating. Still, that pales in comparison with the CDC estimates of 26 million illnesses from flu, resulting in 250,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths from flu in the United States alone.

And even the WHO director-general seemed frustrated that so much attention was being paid to COVID-19. He began his Feb.11 briefing on the coronavirus with a reminder: “Although the world is now focused on coronavirus, we cannot and must not forget Ebola,” which has surged in Africa and which has a much higher fatality rate than COVID-19.

So why is so much attention being paid to COVID-19? First, because it’s new, and spreading. But as Max Fisher wrote in the New York Times, COVID-19 “hits nearly every cognitive trigger we have.” Its novelty and the uncertainty around it override the recognition that other diseases, including flu, are far more endemic and dangerous. He likens the reaction to that after a plane crash, when people shun flying even though a crash is an anomaly and flying is overwhelmingly safe.

And social media spreads the rumors, fake cures, and other untruths that we won’t link to, but include words like “genocide” and “Zionist conspiracy.”

Journalists have the responsibility to put things in context. Cover COVID-19 and its effects, be they economic, physical, or social. But acknowledge its place in the pantheon of disease. Reporting as if it were the end of the world is an epidemic of a different kind.

Corona-Chan is a Party animal. She’s not gonna skip Carnival!

Jim wanted a nursery rhyme about Corona-chan:

Take a vial,
Then you smile,
As you tuck into some soup:
Oh no, you’re starting to droop.

You keep sneezing,
You’re barely breathing:
You’re getting very pale,
And now you cross that vale.
Hey janitor Chang, how's things at bio lab? I-
Is- is that a bowl of BAT SOUP? Ohhh god I'm gonna *sniffle*, I'M GON- *HACK HACK WHEEZE* OHHHH GOD I'M COOOFING AHH- *HACK HACK BLERGH*

San Francisco mayor declares coronavirus emergency

San Francisco Mayor London Breed has declared a local emergency amid coronavirus fears.

“Although there are still zero confirmed cases in San Francisco residents, the global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step up preparedness,” Breed said in a statement Tuesday. “We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm.”

While three people have been treated for COVID-19 at San Francisco hospitals, there have been no confirmed cases of the illness in the city.

Breed made the announcement following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s warning that the virus is likely to continue to spread.

“Ultimately, we expect we will see coronavirus spread in this country,” CDC Director Nancy Messonnier said. “It’s not so much a question of if, but a question of when.”

San Francisco’s declaration, effective immediately, will be in place for seven days and will be voted on by the Board of Supervisors on March 3.

The decree will allow the city to allocate resources around coronavirus mitigation efforts. Such efforts include staffing, the coordination of agencies throughout the city, the allowance of future reimbursement by the state and federal governments and increased awareness throughout the city on coronavirus preparation methods.

Santa Clara and San Diego counties have issued similar declarations.

San Francisco’s health officer, Dr. Tomás Aragón, said that decision was based in part on the high volume of travel between the city and Wuhan, China — the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.

“We are prioritizing children, people who live in congregate settings and vulnerable populations as we plan to reduce the potential for harm from the virus in the community. We have been working closely with the Chinese community, who are so impacted by this situation, and also at risk for stigma and discrimination,” he said.
Breed reiterated the CDC’s call for schools and businesses to prepare for the likely spread of cases and prepare for possible school closures or work-from-home needs.

Messonnier advised parents to talk to schools about the possibility of internet-based learning in the event that COVID-19 were to spread and students needed to refrain from going to school. She suggested businesses think about how to use teleconferencing if employees should need to work from home. And Messonnier said officials would also need to consider whether to cancel large community-based events.

More than 2,600 people have died from the virus, the majority in mainland China. In the United States, there have been 57 confirmed cases; 40 of those are repatriated individuals from the Diamond Princess cruise ship. There are 15 confirmed cases in California.

Oh they wouldn't do that..theyll probs spend it on more commie legislation while the working poor and homeless die in the streets from this plague.

It gets better.

São Paulo, for those unfamiliar, has north of 12 million inhabitants, or 21+ million if you count the greater metro.
