High Guardian Spice - Tumblr: The CalArt Anime

Looks like they're trying to hide it under other titles, though. If they were really proud of it, they'd have put it on the forefront instead of pushing it to the back of the bus.

Maybe we'll find out when the first ratings start coming out how it's going to do. It's going up against actual anime, after all, first priorities and all that.

It's like trying to make someone eat shit by surrounding it with ice cream.

Everything besides In/Spectre and Tower of Gods look like shit in that trailer. Somehow HGS manages to look better than Nobelese does, and it already looks lackluster.

Also, how the fuck is In/Spectre even considered a CR original? They're not in the credits of the anime, so either they got dumped partway through production, they're dubbing it themselves, thus "original", or they're fucking lying like they are calling HGS an anime.

It's only a couple of seconds of animation, but it looks remarkably lifeless.

The sword that the main girl blocks just sits there as she slowly rolls around it and the next bit with the archer just has her kind of hanging in mid-air. The show is supposedly finished and those were the best shots they could pull from it?

Tell me about it. I think this chick broke her arm swinging.

The sword fight is taking place in some bland nothingness, and the cat-girl is also really uninspired, too. I guess they ripped off Tokyo Mew Mew after all.

(Lol Photoshop didn't export the .gif correctly, oh well, nobody cares about the backgrounds anyway.)
I want to feel bad for Raye, but this is the best she and the other dangerhairs could get? How much did this cost, again?

Like there is no getting around how awkward and out of place High Guardian Spice is; you've got all these actual anime and Korean toons, made by storied Asian studios, and then you've got this American knockoff that doesn't look half as original as Avatar: The Last Airbender, made by a no name studio nobody gives a flying FUCK about!

Yeah, the more I look at this cat-girl, the more I get the feeling they tried to make Ichigo a goff/dark magical cat-girl and like with not-Madoka Rosemary, they had to change her outfit up a bit.

For reference, this is Ichigo.

The staff's design looks familiar, too, but it looks just as uninspired as everything else, so I don't really care if it's based off of anything like, I dunno, Lyrical Nanoha's staff, Raising Heart.

Eh, I might just be reaching.

They're saving their budget for those big emotional crying hug scenes, obviously.
And boy howdy that archer shot gets worse the more I look at it.

I'm not really going to be too harsh about this, the animation from the preview looks fine. However my issue was always the fact CR promised that paying them helps the anime industry and the fact they are making content like this betrayed their promise. I don't care how good it is, I'm not paying for crunchy roll or support them anyway financially. The ship has sailed, no matter how good it will end up, which I really doubt it'll be nothing other than a She-ra 2.0.

I love how they're so aware that everyone hates HGS it's not even in the goddamn thumbnail, and when HGS does appear in the trailer, it sticks out like a sore thumb. It's like they're ashamed of it.

Why couldn't they just cancel HGS long ago when it was clear at least 60% of people didn't like it from preview alone? They had all this time!

In comparison to the other shows shown in the trailer, if you had a room of people and you gave them two choices: The Manhwa adaptations or HGS, they're gonna pick the former.

The former has many reasons for most people to want to watch it. Manwhas have been getting popular lately and so fans of that would want to watch it. KPOP fans and Koreaboos would love it, etc. but HGS doesn't seem to have much of an actual appeal and most people are gonna watch it because they know it's 'that SJW show' for that novelty that's gonna wear off at some point.

"Originals" means "exclusive" these days. Most of Netflix Originals weren't made by Netflix, for example. Here's a list of Netflix "Originals": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_..._Netflix#Exclusive_international_distribution

Anyway, back to the topic.

I'm not going into the discussion on the definition of anime, as there are shows in this trailer across the whole spectrum, with In/Spectre on the "definitely anime" end and HGS, Onyx and FreakAngels on the "not anime unless you think RWBY is anime". Out of those three last cartoons, two try their best at that Avatar-like look, and one looks like a cheap anime with a children-show color palette.

I looked at the sword fight frame-by-frame and Pinkhair first blocks the opponent's sword with her chappe and pushes the sword downward so that it presses against her first (fingerless gloves!) and then she blocks the next strike with her unprotected elbow. Brilliant choreography.
(Also, for a frame before hitting the sword with the elbow, her glove magically covers her entire arm instead of just the forearm.)

Then I checked the archer girl. She pulls the string for like 2 or 3 inches (not enough to aim or provide enough energy for an actual bow), and before that there are several frames of animation where half of the arrow just disappears and the other half is drawn (picture-drawn, not bow-drawn) in a wrong position. Instead of a powerful shot we get an apathetic twang.

I guess they wanted to show some action scenes to entice the viewers, but they should have paid a bit more attention to them. The show is gonna have some magic spells, and magic spells are easier to animate, maybe show that.

I would probably watch all of the shows that were listed, but definately not high guardian spice. Even without all of the prior knowledge from here about it, it just really stuck out as odd stylewise when placed next to the rest and the story is pretty meh. I feel like it will fall off to the sidelines next to the other shows and give them more to REEE about when it doesn't get the attention they thought it would for being so 'progressive'.

Either not enough or too much, and remember they're crapping out two other shows based on Korean Manhwas at the same time. As much as I want to say they all got the short end of the stick, HGS clearly got the worst deal if that's what they have to show for it. 'Couse like I said, the anime aren't faring much better either.

Funny part is, if you go into the comments in the Youtube Video, absolutely NOBODY is saying anything about HGS, not even to shit on it. All anyone can talk about is Noblesse, The God of High School, and Tower of God. HGS might as well not even be in the trailer.
