Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I don't think it was engineered specifically to kill Chinese. I do however agree on the difference with population density. Outside of New York, Chicago, and LA public transit isn't as popular. God knows where I'm from you generally only see one or two people on a bus at rush hour. Compare that to China/Japan/New York's subway system. They spend more time in an enclosed environment with dozens of others everyday.

And a suburban separated house will not be as much of a vector as a giant skyscraper with people packed in, and who knows how the ventilation is set up. Honestly I wonder about a lot of the walk ups in New York, I've heard some buildings still have wiring that was initially set up by Edison. As in Thomas, not Con. Now imagine that with ventilation.

I'm with you re all the brownstone buildings and similar in NYC and other cities. Yup, knob and tube wiring. But until very recently there were no reports of cases in these cities or the country, and am sure Chinese visited many places in the USA before the travel ban went into effect. Don't like to think it was engineered to kill Chinese either, but that's where just about all the cases and deaths are happening.

Would also add that the general belief is the number of illnesses/deaths in China have been greatly understated, while the numbers of sick/dead in other countries are fairly accurate.

The films most at risk are Mulan, F9 and No Time to Die.
And nothing of value was lost. I hope coronavirus will change the movie industry for the better, as producers and directors won't be able to afford taking the risk of creating black or gay or whatever politically correct versions of existing culture and folklore. If epidemic of such proportions won't stop this madness, nothing will.

I call bullshit until there's actual unbiased. clinical trials.
Yup, all this has been a case of medics literally throwing everything they have at it, to see if something works. Some people are going to get better anyway, and proper (as proper as you can get, in such a circumstance) would be needed to see if any of these things work. Choloroquine is worth a look, as are some antivirals.

Would the antivirals be bad if someone was infected? I noticed an insistence that PrEP users generally had to test HIV- and wonder if that would be sorta the same thing?

Or would you want to prevent secondary infection? I heard discussion re: immunosuppressants to prevent the cytokine storm to potentially mediate the younger deaths?
PrEP fucks up all sorts of stuff, it has a number of potentially severe effects and can fry your liver and kidneys.,So no, not drugs you want to be on unless you absolutely have no choice.
Stopping secondary infections is important with any viral respiratory illness. Once the lungs are damaged bacteria find it easy to get in.
The cytokine storm is a more immediate thing that happens and also one you want to prevent. We are getting better at that but it’s still a big killer. People vary in their susceptibility to it, and it’s one reason why young healthy people can be affected more.

Exceptional individuals on the American left continue to make xenophobia appear rational. Wringing its hands about WuFlu shutting down their open borders fetish, The New Republic tweets:

"The racist, right-wing isolationism favored by the Trump administration is as bad an answer to the coronavirus as it is to the climate crisis." The article, "We're all on this sick planet together" (not worth reading) bemoans calls to restrict international travel as crass right-wing exploitation of crisis.

Highly ratioed tweet | Archive (can't get this shit to archive rn)

Fact is that US Customs is not doing any screening currently. No temperature checks, no hygiene info. Just asking people if they were in China recently. That's it AFAIK. Who is exploiting this crisis? For fucks sake, at least screen people at customs when there's a pandemic afoot.
If Trump was actually the right wing xenophobe they proclaimed him to be we would be seeing much stronger messasures being taken instead of trying to downplay it for the markets. As it is his response seems frankly weak.

The time for those measures was December. Now it would mostly just cause panic. There is no quarantine and there never will be. There are asymptomatic carriers in every US state at this point.

Isn't lung tissue pretty rapidly regenerating normally if you can get over the pneumonia, good survival rate after then?

Again haha you're an awesome prof, bravo & respect, thanks again!
Some of it will never really heal. I was hospitalized for something similar many years ago and my inspiration volume never fully recovered.

It's kinda fun watching the mental gymnastics around Trump here. Elite globalists downplaying the virus are bad, Trump does the same thing but orange man good. Grabbing those Americans off the cruise ship? Deep state making sure Trump doesn't win in 2020.

For real just admit that strong daddy fucked up.

How is it possible to be this stupid.

He didn't. There was no winning move here. That said if it was literally anyone else making these decisions they'd be talking about how bad he fucked up, so yeah you're right.

This makes me think a quarantine won't work in Brooklyn. People just don't give a shit.

Nah Brooklyn’s easy. Just block the bridges and tunnels. Quarantine achieved. They can’t infect the rest of us.

None of those masks will work for hipsters unless they include a hole for vaping.

Have you seen the movie Contagion? It’s actually really interesting, but this post reminds me of the guy who swears the government is ignoring an OTC medicine that treats the virus. He’s full of shit, of course but he makes money off the panic and disorder.

That reminds me. We can probably convince the fools in California to eat/drink/take as an enema some really fascinating and insane substances as a prophylactic treatment for Corona-Chan. Anyone have any amusing but harmless suggestions?

I mean, what you say does explain why noone in the US is doing anything about the problem, but that really begs the question.

Should Trump not be at least attempting to do something? Shouldn't state governors be doing something? Or can all the blame be attributed to the system of government? If the latter, what does that say about the system of government and the weakness of 'leaders' who won't even attempt to do anything?

Trump and the Governors ARE all doing something. They are all dialed in, paying attention and planning. This isn’t something they do in public. It’s simply work. All agencies down to the local counties are in the loop. Right now the biggest thing is to be alert and watchful for where and when it shows up. Infectious control protocols are ramped up. Counties and a States are reviewing plans. These are things they all train on annually. At this point the system is working as designed and has not yet been put under any stress.

Film industry impact, for those interested in such things.

TL;DR:

- Three films have missed their expected slots in China (2nd largest market) - 1917, Little Women and Dr. Dolittle. But they weren't expected to be impact grossers so the studios are like 'whatevs'. No mention of BoP's terrible start, but we all know the truth on that one (piece of shit).

- The films most at risk are Mulan, F9 and No Time to Die. Not only is it up in the air if they'll even get a Chinese release, if they do, the local market will take priority in terms of distribution/number of screenings (i.e. Chinese films take precedence). *Nb: the water cooler rumblings about this are that Universal are very concerned re: F9.

- In terms of theatre closures on US soil, it would be unprecedented and a hard thing to do unilaterally (they don't have the authoritarian government of China). But if theatres are closing, so are sporting events, churches etc. So new territory potentially, but studios are preparing.

- To the above, studios are considering moving to more streaming options and will likely use the pandemic to explore. Which returns to the point of the article: streamers are killing moving theatres anyway, CoronaChan or not.

Yeah this will hasn’t the end of cinema and increase the rise of streaming and on demand. Those movies might simply release as a streaming rental in China. Also BoP whining about Coronavirus stopping sales in China is hilarious. The movie was never going to release there.

"the woman, a Chinese national who had recently arrived in the city from China."

Oh fucking come on. People in the press and social media are screeching about racial prejudices and whatnot but this shit really doesn't help.

You had the Indian guy literally an hero because he though he had it and didn't want to put his community in danger. On the flip side you get this dumbass and the woman who took a bunch of anti-virals to get through airport checks to go to Paris. Literal Typhoid Marys going on walkabout infecting everyone in their path. Does common sense and decency not exist in China?

That’s sadly not a uniquely Chinese thing. I was listening to Niel Cavuto on FoxBusiness earlier today. He was doing a phone interview with an American College student studying in the Italian Plague zone. His school program has been cancelled. So this morons first best plan is to get out of the infected area and go stay at a friends in Madrid Spain for a few weeks, before coming home to the US. The thought that maybe, just maybe he should simply stay in his apartment and not risk international travel because he might already have it never occurs to him. Idiots!

First case popped up to the far north in Norway, infected person had visited China recently
More interesting is the headlines all running with the "ALL IS WELL!" statement from the Norwegian version of CDC

I am dissapointed its not oslo we need those faggots gone

While probably a bit late as our attention drifts from China to ragging on Eurotrash. But Laowhy86’s wife Vivi posted some footage she shot last year showcasing Chinese Wet Markets. This is what life looks like with no public health or food safety codes.

I don’t see any live bat. But Chinese Meat and Poultry handling practices are terrifying.
