Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I wouldn't say that. Last year, for example and actually around this time, I had the serious flu. Throat closed all the way the fuck up. Got better and then what happened? Two months later I was sick with the flu again. It happens sometimes and the work environment I was in was spreading that stuff around all over.
It's true, it can happen. In your case, you were constantly exposed to the disease, until such point your immune system was overwhelmed by it. That isnt caused by anything specific to the flu though, that's just viral load and herd immunity, or lack thereof, in a nutshell. Cold, flu, any virus will work this way.

The problem is these corona patients are usually in isolation from other people when reinfection occurs, not in environments surrounded by the sick. This woman was in isolation at home for weeks when she got sick again. Where did it come from? The latent disease around her home wouldnt be enough to reinfect her, unless she has a immunocompromising health condition or the virus itself can hide from the immune system and reinfect the host repeatedly, or somehow mutates in ways that trick the immune system into not recognizing it.

I told you people if it got into New York it would be bad. Well to all those people who voted autistic and disagree. how do you like me now? (Edit you people thought it wouldn't happen there or it wouldn't be a "big deal")

We're used to this shit by now, especially if you're in education, where the source of every fucking epidemic is always the same: Some asshole parent, who, in their infinite wisdom, decided they were going to send an obviously visibly sick child to school anyway to get them out of their hair for a few hours, during which time they can infect dozens of others, starting with children with obviously compromised immune systems.

We've gotten hit by every big disease in the past. Bird Flu, Pig Flu, Unidentified Mexican Don't-Drink-The-Water Disease, you name it.

There's nothing Coronavirus can do to us that the state government hasn't already tried to do to us metaphorically.

This part, right here, is what is so..odd...about this disease.

Normally, when you get a cold/flu, you are immune to the rest for the year. The antibodies made keep you safe from other strains, since the various strains evolve together at the same time and are usually very similar, unless you get a year of having 2 very distinct flus running around.

But to be re-infected with the same strain? Outside of immunocompromised patients, that is extremely rare, especially so soon after having it the first time, when antibody production is still high. That's part of the reason some are jittery around corona-chan, because the death rate of 3% becomes a lot more threatening if you can get it repeatedly, with a 3% chance each time, in the span of a few weeks in between, suggesting any number of horror theories of rapid mutation or lingering, persistent infection.
Not to completely skip over the point you're trying to make, but in the interests of trying to calm a few people down: an enormous bulk of that 3% figure also comes from a third-world country with nearly no healthcare systems or proper sanitation. We still don't have a clear indication of what a first-world figure will be, but if it's only 3% in somewhere like China then it's going to be much lower than that in a more-developed, more-advanced nation. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to factor in that of those 3%, the majority of them were people who were very old (75+) and/or had a compromised immune system.

COVID-19 isn't a flat 3% mortality chance across the board, there's a lot of other factors involved.

The Fat Acceptance/Fatgirl Cow threads are really going to thin out (hurr hurr) if Corona-chan's US tour is a smashing success. Most of those fatties already have sleep apnea and are generally unhealthy; a few have taken to falling apart at a truly alarming pace as of late. Pneumonia's a big killer of the morbidly obese as it is.
I had a conversation with somebody earlier today on just this topic. A fellow cityfag, who hasn't even gone camping since he was a Cub Scout, with no relatives who aren't also cityfags, was thinking that maybe he could just leave the city if things got really bad.

I asked him where he would go, where he would find shelter, and what he would do to take care of himself for weeks on end. After all, all of that "empty" land far out beyond the suburbs or in/over the mountains is owned by somebody--maybe a private citizen, maybe a government body--and they aren't going to want you there.

Everything you said? That's what I told him. He got kind of panicky-looking as he realized there was no magical safe place in the country to run away to, but I gave him some of my standard advice on prepping to shelter in place, which is what he'd have to do after a major earthquake, and that seemed to help. I hope it did, anyway.
Where would you go? Do you have family elsewhere?

If you go somewhere else, and have no pre-existing ties to that community, why should the locals take you in?

What will you do when (not if; when) they refuse to take you in? How would you survive?

If you live in a city, you already understand its culture. You know what resources are available. You know how to navigate it. You can lock your door and enjoy a basic level of physical safety and comfort. If you get sick, the hospitals may be overcrowded, but you'll still get a better level of care than a rural hospital that's stretched thin and overburdened even at the best of times.

Buy some extra food and supplies and stay in the fucking city; there really is nowhere else to go.

Yep, but they don't want to hear that. I don't care about stickers, but I giggle each time one of them neg rates me for telling them the truth. It makes me think of the face my son makes when you tell him something he doesn't like. Kind of like a pouting version of 😠

Or there's a failure somewhere and they aren't so isolated.

Is it wrong that I want to Corona fuck earth?

In the long run not taking action is going to hurt him more than taking extreme actions early on; He had no good options but picked the worse of the two.

What I think he should have done:
Raise the quarentine times from two weeks to a month; Everything coming in (goods, imports, etc) should be disinfected for 10 days; Close flights from Europe, Asia, and South America; Send in the military if states refuse to enforce federal policies here to virtue signal, invoke FEMA laws or use the prescdent of using the military to desegregate school as justification.

>We aren't an authoritarian shithole like China. We don't sequester sick citizens against their will in the USA unless they meet very precise criteria
This is the exact sort of ideological inflexibility that leads to the mass death that communism is notorious for.
The issue with this is that due to the communists fucking around the first month and a half of the epidemic there was never a hope of stopping it with border closures. It's already spread into every country with international travel by the end of January. It's just largely indistinguishable from the seasonal flu if you aren't looking at a macro scale or using test kits. All shutting everything down would do is cause a cascade of societal failures that will only make things worse.

Stop being a sped.

By the way, I haven't heard a single peep from the American Surgeon General. Isn't that the person who's appointed to lead these kinds of public health-related things?

For infectious diseases it's usually the CDC. Surgeon General is more about general health advisories like recommended daily exercise and shit.

Run run as fast as you can
You can't escape me, I'm corona-chan!
Your fever is rising, your lungs are on fire
Moment by moment, it all looks more dire

Because I'm just that autistic...

For months we had Corona-chan
Stewing over in China land
Unseen with eyes, unsmelled by nose
Can't feel her with your fingers or toes
Our dear Corona-chan over in China land!

Here's the dull leader who let her run loose
From bat soup to tofu she'll slip you a noose
They made her with cruelty, ignorance and filth
They gave her a playground and felt little guilt
Our dear Corona-chan over in China land!

Now open the airplanes, see what can be done
This Corona-chan, she sure knows how to run
Out of the airports and onto the street
Now run away towards each folk she can meet
Dear Corona-chan has escaped China land!

Now run away old woman, run away old man
Wearing N95, run as fast as you can
Through quarantine and out of the base
Contain her right now, if just to save face
Dear Corona-chan has escaped China land!

Along came Koreans who went to a church
For Corona-chan, all it took was one lurch
Run run as fast as you can
You can't escape me, I'm Corona-chan!
I'm Corona-chan loose out of China land!

Along came Italians who thought themselves worldly
Kissing on strangers, a bit more than just girly
Run run as fast as you can
You can't escape me, I'm Corona-chan!
I'm Corona-chan loose out of China land!

Along came Iran full of crazies in mosques
Bent over, asses-up praying through coughs
Run run as fast as you can
You can't escape me, I'm Corona-chan!
I'm Corona-chan loose out of China land!

Along came Japan, giant port for a boat
Keep them trapped floating inside of a moat
Run run as fast as you can
You can't escape me, I'm Corona-chan!
I'm Corona-chan loose out of China land!

Along came Brazil with a stripshow called "Carnival"
Uncancelled and crawling debaucherous festival
Run run as fast as you can
You can't escape me, I'm Corona-chan!
I'm Corona-chan loose out of China land!

Along came Israel, despite their big wall
Spitting on doctors, "I'm above all!"
Run run as fast as you can
You can't escape me, I'm Corona-chan!
I'm Corona-chan loose out of China land!

Along came America with a mixed sort of ears
Translating, culminating sources with peers
"I'll speak of my base, my shitposting friends!"
"And I swear Josh's photos came from other ends!"
"Look, Corona-chan's out of China land!"

There is no place to go, there is no place to run
But riding out disasters can sometimes be fun
Start prepping, not dooming, off we go
What happens next, none of us know
Now that Corona-chan's out of China land

Will the CDC cook up a good ol' vaccine
Or will WHO bleed us dry, leaving us lean
Fewer are options for K-pop and pasta
For bombers and weeaboos, pretty much nada
For dancers and merchants, not well will it pan
With Corona-chan loose from China land

So let us stay home, calmly lay out a plan
Since Corona-chan is loose from China land
When our pantries are full, we'll freeze up some meat
Between fits of coughing, have plenty to eat
Corona-chan is in everyone's land!

Anyone not playing Don't Fear the Reaper while cooming to the concept of the world ending is downplaying the virus according to the average Doomer.
Who's playing "DFTR?" The only soundtrack I hear is Talking Heads:
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
This ain't no fooling around...

If you are state side make sure you are zoned for it. Backyard chickens aren't allowed everywhere unless you're rural.
This. Chickens are relatively easy, but it's kinda like the gun thing, if you've never done it before, study it and don't just jump in because you got spooked here. Hens are great for eggs, but you gotta figure in noise and poop, also specialized dietary needs as well as crap like flea/mite dip. It's not prohibitively hard, but there is a learning curve. And please, make sure you're zoned for it, it's sad when flocks wind up at shelters or given away on craigslist because people didn't check their neighborhood zoning or HOA beforehand

oh dear

That’s never a good sign. Few things say “You’re all completely fucked!” Quite like the guy in charge of fighting the virulent disease outbreak jumping off a bridge. Enjoy the K-Pop while it lasts Kiwi’s! It ain’t gonna be with us much longer.

Add in:

Arsehole co-worker who thinks he or she is a massive hero for coming to work when they are spraying disease out of every single orifice, because they think sitting there horking and choking and coughing and snotting and blowing their nose constantly and coughing mucus up and sweating their fever out at work will totally impress the boss with their deep commitment to ... well, infecting everyone else in the room before they get ordered home because they're disgusting, infectious and useless into the bargain. Nobody cares about your perfect sick record or your desire to bootlick the boss, arsehole.

Arseholes who have reached adult age without learning that you wash the faecal spray/dick germs/urine spray/general bathroom filth off your hands after the toilet.

Arseholes who walk around the supermarket lavishly coughing and sneezing near food. Bonus points for dragging your snotty, ill plague rat of a child who then does same and puts their hands on everything.

People who endlessly drag their snotty kid to the GP for a simple cold, allowing them to racket around, touch everything and infect an entire waiting room which includes chemo patients and god knows what else.

there are multiple strains of flu circulating each year though, it mutates very rapidly. flu viruses are categorized really roughly into flu A and flu B, but that's mostly for testing purposes. You keep immunity to whatever strain of flu you've encountered.
