Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Literally nuking the everloving fuck out of any place that has this is not a half-bad idea. Here’s why:

If this thing can behave like a bacteriophage that also infects human cells, then we are beyond fucked.

If any of this is true, then it may be a biosphere-destroyer.
It's not true. There hasn't been a Chakrabarti more full of shit since AOC's chief of staff.

(Florida) Went to walmart. Water, disinfectants, etc, all cleared. Rice and other goods like coffee still on shelves. That was quick, but again, food stamps and sales and such.

Dumb joke: two peanuts were walking down a street. One was... a salted!

GDC has been cancelled. Microsoft might cancel soon. I hope. If not, I hope plague doctor masks are being prepared.

Here's the link if you want to see more tech conference cancellations.
Like Flash, Adobe is opening themselves up to viruses.

Can vouch for that crow thing, had 100’s arrive on a single afternoon once, gave them peanuts and a particularly friendly one a cuddle and then they went on their merry way after a nice little visit.

A lot of people don't know that virus can fuck you up for life. When I started middle school a girl contracted west nile. Went from a normal 12 year old to basically a vegetable in less than a year. The 2% doesn't sound like a lot, but the 20% needing medical care is going to strain every healthcare system in every country this takes root in.

West Nile is nasty, and causes encephalitis, which can have permanent effects. I do like crows, and ravens - they’re very intelligent creatures.l and have a lot of character. However, they do potentially carry west Nile in the USA, so handling them in the wild is not something I’d do.
They’re seen as harbingers of doom perhaps because they were usually seen on gibbets picking the eyes out of people and on battlefields scavenging.

'This is not a zombie movie': WA urges calm, reveals plans for coronavirus fever clinics

The physician who treated Australia’s first person to die of coronavirus, Perth man James Kwan, has said this is “not a zombie movie” and that the West Australian health system will cope with a looming local outbreak.
Her words came as Mr Kwan’s wife remained battling the virus in a Perth hospital and the West Australian government announced it would be putting fever clinics in place for an “inevitable” community spread.

James was a lovely funny guy and we were lucky enough to get to know him a little bit,” said his doctor, Fiona Lake.
“James was pretty sick and his wife knew that.

“We know this is a disease that has poorer outcomes in older people who may have co-morbidities.
“There were a range of things could be done to support him but his lungs could not cope.
“[His wife] is grieving at the moment but she is remaining pretty well. She is stable and not of great concern. She is continuing to be managed in isolation in a ward area.
“This is not a kind of zombie movie ... we know what is happening and if we stick to what we know and to the guidelines, hand-washing and things like that, I think we will be able to manage this process.”
She explained Mrs Kwan was being kept in a negative pressure room, with air vented outside, and entry only possible through an anteroom in which doctors and nurses donned full protective clothing.

“It can be very challenging for patients in these kind of circumstances, being in isolation, and it’s also hard on the staff; but the nurses provide superb care, and empathic care,” Dr Lake said.
“Her friends in particular, the nursing staff who have seen a lot of her, have been able to give her that support.”
Tourism pioneer James Kwan has become the first Australian to die from coronavirus.

While Mr and Mrs Kwan remain the state’s only confirmed cases, more than 600 people had been tested in WA as of Sunday and another 30-40 tests are taking place daily.
The government on Monday acknowledged that while WA was still in containment phase, attempting to stop entry from highly infected areas such as China and Iran and isolating those who have already entered, with the number of people still travelling, localised spread was now thought inevitable across the next six to 12 months.

General national modelling has suggested this could occur by late April or mid-May, but this is considered a very general model open to influence by many factors.
It is expected 80 per cent of the cases will be mild and people will be able to stay at home.

Health Minister Roger Cook said on Monday WA’s health system was more than capable of rising to the challenge.
“Our hearts and our thought go out to James Kwan and his family ... it must be a very sad time for them,” he said.
“The federal government is signalling that we are now moving to a global pandemic mode.

“We now have to take prepatory steps and scale up our planning.
I don’t want to sugarcoat this. Moving to a pandemic mode is a very serious set of circumstances and I want to assure Western Australians there is a lot of preparation and planning going into our health services now to make sure we are ready.”

Health Department director general David Russell-Weisz said since the federal and state chief health officers had raised the alert levels, he was strengthening the WA Chief Health Officer’s team and coordinating a system-wide response to move from containment to treatment mode.
This included evaluating the capacities of hospitals and putting in fever clinics when necessary, specialised clinics to screen and treat patients with COVID-19.

An incident control room was in place and it was expected that at some point non-emergency elective surgeries would be reduced.
People are encouraged not to stockpile food and water but instead practice good personal hygiene through hand-washing, and if they feel unwell to stay home and seek medical advice.

WA Health seem pretty optimistic about the whole thing, while not trying to sugarcoat it either. Is this 'hope' that I feel?

Prevotella is a normal part of your gut and general body flora. It can get out of hand and is often found in lung infections. This is one reason why why lung damage leads to secondary bacterial infection, and why you often get antibiotics for what started as viral pneumonia. The prevotella is a secondary opportunist. It’s present because the patients have had their immune system knocked and their Normal flora is unbalanced. Like getting thrush after antibiotics, for example. The candida is always there anyway but normal the ecosystem holds it in check.
Bacteria have very different cell membranes to human cells and many internal differences. A virus that infects a mammalian cell does so through specific receptors that bacterial cells may not even have. Bacteria have a totally different type of virus that targets them (‘phage) but as far as I know, a mammalian virus won’t be able to enter a bacterial cell or reproduce in one. I’m happy to be proven wrong on that if anyone has a reference.
The high prevalence of the bacteria in the sewage means people have the shits, and are shedding virus along with all the other stuff.

Her timeline since about 18 hours ago (the start of March) gives some idea how hard it is to get tested in Japan (she's posted a couple of videos about it). I was expecting Japan to be managing this better, to be honest. I think this makes EriMin the first Kiwi to end up in official statistics.

Also she's home and livestreaming now.
And now her boss has forced her to take that YouTube video down in case it causes a scandal, because that's what's most important right now, right?

UK doesn't either, theirs a DR. John Campbell on youtube whose been covering this. He's a old english medical professional, he says NHS wouldn't be able to handle the excess inflow.

PPE shortage isn't just a american problem, it's a world problem atm.

I did see a interview with some Scottish government official saying if things got to bad that they would ask retired dr. and nurses to come back to work to help with the workload. I don't know how well that would go, considering this is harder on the elderly.

I would hope the usa government would be able to set up mobile clinics/hospitals if shit got really bad, but then again they can barely handle a hurricane or blizzard.

Which is the key word used "Excess inflow" it's highly likely in a UK pandemic scenario the entire healthcare system will be ordered to turn away absolutely anyone not suspected of COVID-19. Cancellation of all non-life threatening surgery and the closing of A&E departments to any and all walk ins, you don't arrive in an ambulance? You get turned away.

Its easy to forget just how enormous and useful a government controlled healthcare system can be. For the time being, self isolation, washing your hands etc seem to be working and UK cases remain remarkably low, but they are preparing quietly and ready for any issues which may arise. Our total cases, even with the "jump" of 13 yesterday still sits at just 36, with the only reported british death being a guy who hadn't lived in the UK (lived out in East Asia) for decades.

Nearly all of the infected are either Persians, Italians, tourists from the effected regions and a solitary painter/decorator from Essex who's contacted it in isolation.

Oh, and remember the screeching from various tard Kiwis we had in this thread for the 2,000 Wuhan Tourists that came to the UK from Wuhan? How the UK was irredeemably fucked because we don't inject every tourist with a microchip which plays God Save the Queen when scanned?

That was 38 days ago, and we've seen no sudden increase of infection rates when we know the average is 5-27 days.

Instead, pretty much all our infected have come as a result of contact from Italy and Iran.

========================================================

So, advice for those worried about "powerlevelling" and all that nonsense. You can either keep things vague on updating where you are, or do as I do, which is create an amalgamated fake region I live in. Most Kiwis who follow my postings and musings know I live in the English Midlands, but I post from the perspective of "Pillockshire" a twee county actually made up of various spots of the region I live in and frequent regularly.

Onto the Pillockshirian updates.

There's no reported shortages beyond the usual shortage of face masks. Screwfix, the national DIY/Tools chain that has several locations within the county have now sold out entirely of any remaining stock after limiting people to just 5 units per order. The noted local family run hardware store has also sold out.

Food, toilet paper etc continues to flow, with regular shopping continuing. No evidence of prepper buying etc bar myself and a couple of friends. It's funny because all I really did was buy the bigger bags of stuff on the shelves, not stacked my cart high with crap like we've seen elsewhere. A few cans of soup, few cans of kidney beans, big bags of rice (2kg) and a 3kg bag of pasta.

An acquaintance of mine was recently enjoying a holiday to Thailand which had no reported cases at the time he left, but did when they were headed back and despite a busy social and voluntary schedule has self-isolated for the 21 days asked of by the government.

Within the whole english midlands we've had 1 suspected case and 1 confirmed case, which considering there are significant east asian populations in Birmingham and other cities is quite remarkable.

Guys I have figured it all out.

India has record low cases. It was written to be a superpower in 2020. It has 10 months to do it. Enough time for a global economical and health crisis. All they have to do is hold out while the handwashing cow killers die off and manufacturing moves to India as its the only place that can keep then running.

Now Indian immune system maybe supercharged by bathing in the poo poo and pee pee since they were born.

Metaphisically they got Pepe and Buddha on their side. Biologically they have been training their immune system by drinking biohazard water that could kill a regular human and living in the filthiest place on Earth.

India will be Supapowa Twennytwenny. While the rest of the world is ravaged by plague, the US milizary is concentrating on gender issues, India will be the last man standing.

I for one welcome our Tikka Masala Overlords, may their poo be stinky and plentiful and their cows healthy and beautiful. Chingchong should eat the poo not the bat.
