Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Ethanol disrupts membranes of bacteria and capsids (the shell) of viruses.
soap helps to dislodge stuff. What actually does most of the cleaning is the physical rubbing of hands to help the foam and water lift stuff off.
So a lab bench you can squirt with a mist of ethanol way easier than scrubbing with soap, it evaporates (or gets passed through a flame and burnt off) and there you go, everything is dead. but for hands, soapy water is probably better. Just look up how to wash your hands properly - there will be loads of clips online.

So soap doesn't actually have an effect on the membranes of either bacteria or viruses? A contact effect only happens with ethanol?

How long before it hits the homeless population?

Based on what we know about infectivity and incubation time, I'd say there's a chance they've already been exposed.

(archive)

The King County cases were reported as all having been acquired through community transmission, and all the workers who have responded to / been active at that nursing home have doubtless been exposed as well. If any emergency or health services workers have been there and then gone on to interact with any homeless in course of their job duties... yeah.

You've GOT to be shitting me. That is a quantum leap past exceptional. And Muslims wonder why so many people think so badly of their religion. Seventh-century thinking is not compatible with advanced societies.

Well, we're not used to it in the modern world, but nature does have a tendency to take care of the truly retarded eventually.

"I'm a priest of an iron age death cult and if you use modern medicine during this pandemic we'll kill you to save your soul" is pretty far up there, but hey, the survivors probably won't listen to him again. (Guarantee that stupid asshole will use modern medicine himself.)

Quick question.

So folks in Ireland and other areas far removed from China have come down with Kung-Flu.

I know people travel for many reasons, but why TF are the Irish going to China? Honestly I wasn't aware China was such a popular place to visit. I know it has its nicer areas and the New Year festivals are something else (only reason why I would go)...but generally it's a commie Big Brother shithole?
It's probably not tourists in most cases.

1. You have tons of Chinese people that live, study and work all over the world. These are probably the primary carriers. This is why so many cases show up at universities, they're most likely Chinese exchange students.

2. You have tons of westerners (especially men) who conduct business there. Any larger company in the west that physically produces something tends to have one or two employees that go to China a few times per year to conduct business, oversee factories and so on. This also includes all the companies that buy shit from there and sell here, like larger stores, chains and so on.

No soap does have a contact effect, it’s a detergent and detergent will disrupt a lipid membrane. It’s just that ethanol nukes stuff, whereas the amount of soap and strength of detergent you’d need to do that on skin would lead to skin damage after a while. Your hand soap you use is formulated differently to a strong ‘grease cutting’ detergent like washing up/dish liquid. You’ll notice if you do dishes by hand a lot you get very dry skin - that’s the grease and lipids and sebum that protects your skin getting stripped out. Really strong lab detergents exist (basically concentrated SDS) and they’re awful for your skin.
Warm water and soap is the best thing, but out and about we don’t have that and 70% sanitiser does just fine

To be fair, religion, as a societal control, has an interest in culling the weak and promoting the strongest.

This response is in line with that tradition.

So wash with soap and a lot of warm water first, and put the alcohol on after the soap was washed off and the water dried, right?

Both the Northern Ireland case and the Republic of Ireland case were associated with travel from Italy, not China.

Also, Ireland's not the isolated agricultural shithole of 60 years ago that a lot of Americans still imagine it to be. It's got a lot of multinational companies doing business there due to its astronomically low tax rates (to the point where Apple's Irish tax setup has been deemed illegal by the EU). A couple of my coworkers flew to Singapore for business at the start of last month and we have constant contact with our offices in other European countries too. I'd be shocked if the multinationals here didn't turn out to be a disease vector.

If you’re washing your hands well you don’t need sanitizer too. That’s overkill.

Save the sanitizer for when you’re out in public and can’t wash your hands. Like pumping gas or shopping at the store before you get in the car etc.

I don't think anyone is wondering why when it showed up in Iran, it showed up in Qom, the center of their religious lunacy, first and heaviest.

If you think about it, a virus like this is the cure for religious insanity/stupidity in Iran. Iranian people are all Darwin Award recipients and coronavirus is cleansing society (and Iran) of them. We should be thankful.

I’m also willing to bet my money on the Shinjeon cult intentionally traveling to Wuhan to get sick and bring it back, like an end time scenario.

Shhhh, she is a SCIENTIST and very tired.

I have a Pure Bullshit degree in PoliSci and I suspect I am more qualified as a "Scientist" than she is. (I mean PoliSci involved Some Math. Which is more than the Sociology and 'Studies" fools require)

The Iranian people have got to be among the most put upon people in the world. And the least deserving of it. Actual Iranians are generally some of the nicest most trouble free people on the planet. You have to wonder what God they pissed off to have the Ayatollah's imposed on them.

You dont need both. If you have access to soap and water use that. Out and about use sanitiser. I keep a little bottle in my handbag and use it after touching stuff like handrails, trolley handles, PIN pads etc. When I come in from being out its shoes off, then wash my hands.
If this thing makes people wash their hands more then it’ll have at least one positive effect (along with taking out anyone who thinks licking a shrine is a good idea, people who think bushmeat is great and the entire Iranian leadership...)

yeah I agree about it Iran. I know a fair few Iranians and they’re all good people. Their leadership however....

Stay safe, Washington Kiwis.

The Daily Mail is in full panic mode. Coronavirus has been in and circulating around the US at least since December 2019. If it were the mother of all viruses we'd have corpses littering the streets by now.
  • The coronavirus death toll in the U.S. climbed to six - all in Washington state - on Monday
  • Five of the six deaths have been linked to the LifeCare long-term care facility just outside Seattle
  • It comes after Dr Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has warned that the coronavirus has likely reached 'pandemic proportions'
  • The leading expert went on to say the U.S. might need to consider social mitigation, including closing down schools and not allowing events where large crowds are in confined spaces
  • It comes after Dr Matt McCarthy, who works at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, warned coronavirus cases will surge into the thousands by next week
  • He also claimed he doesn't have the tools to properly care for patients because of the lack of coronavirus tests being made available to hospitals
  • Health officials have been scrambling to get their own coronavirus testing kits up and running after getting stuck with faulty tests from the federal government
  • Scott Gottlieb, who is the former FDA commissioner said three critical weeks were lost in trying to contain the spread of coronavirus in the U.S. because of the faulty tests
  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services confirmed on Sunday that it is investigating a manufacturing defect in some initial coronavirus test kits
  • It comes as New York Gov Andrew Cuomo confirmed on Sunday that a healthcare worker in her 30s was the first confirmed case in the state
I haven't heard about any lines except at the Brooklyn and Queens Costco and since both boroughs have large Asian populations I'm not surprised. I haven't seen any of that at Target or any other supermarket in Manhattan despite nearly everyone I spoke with last week confessed to being worried and two used the word "terrified".

Ordering online and picking up at the store is great, I avoid crowds and things, just run in and out with my stuff.

I recall hearing that nearly 1/3rd of the people living in Ireland aren't Irish at this point.

Where did you get this secret pic of @Spiteful Crow
Didn't know he was one of Microsoft's MVPs. Good job, man.

Okay, panic's over, everyone. Racism is the real virus. ;)

In 2000, Italy had the best healthcare. It isn't even in the worldwide top ten anymore. The US is, though. I don't disagree that the American system has issues. I'm not taking 20 year old rankings as fact, though. That's dumb.

Just because a statistic was true 20 years ago doesn't mean it is now.

Is being racist a good reaction to this? Of course not. Hugging someone from Wuhan with a sign proclaiming they aren't a virus also isn't. Use (un)common sense.

If that sixth death isn't another elderly one, I'll be surprised. Seems to be the main age group worst effected right now.
