Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Is it just a coincidence that Democratic politicians weren't open and honest about the virus until after everyone put in their votes in California?
Because now they're finally putting out numbers and admitting it's a problem.
Maybe it's a coincidence. Maybe not.
They became open and honest about it when they realized they could throw all the blame on Trump instead.

Edit: @Sissy Galvez I'm not saying Trump hasn't completely fucked us by putting markets over people; I'm saying these people used the opertunity to get the heat off them. These are the same guys saying it was racist 2 weeks ago to want to shut down flights, which Trump should have and failed to do.

That too. I thought it was interesting that they just sat on this and after everyone put in their votes now they're saying "it's a problem and an emergency." Hm. Maybe they should have done that weeks ago.

Austin mayor just cancelled SXSW and declared Austin a "disaster area" (been a disaster for awhile, but I digress).
Huge financial impact but it's probably for the best. Maybe Matthew McC can livestream playing bongos and smoking for two weeks.
SXSW Cancelled

eta:
No word on the rodeo or Formula 1 Grand Prix events yet; event planners have to submit "COVID-19 Mitigation Plan" to the City for review. SXSW was unique in that events are/were held all over the area and could not be contained. Events in one location "may" go ahead if the City approves mitigation plans.

I read somewhere that 70% is better because it doesn't evaporate as quickly and thus has more time to kill shit. Although the aloe vera might cancel that.
It’s absolutely true that 70% is the ideal mix to make viruses and bacteria explode, I dunno why you peeps are doing anything with it, just rub your hands down with 70% and you’re good to go.

SCMP is literally a Chinese propaganda outlet lol.

And where did they get these 160,000 testing kits?

There are apparently a couple of companies in Korea that are manufacturing their own test kits, one of which is Seegene Inc, based in Seoul:

Seegene introduced a single-tube assay, Allplex 2019-nCoV Assay, which can detect three different target genes, E gene, RdRP gene and Ngene.

The assay has been designed based on the international recommended protocols posted by World Health Organization (WHO).

Due to the feasibility of a simultaneous test in a single-tube as against the existing multi-tube assays, it becomes possible to improve the efficiency in workflow, maximise the throughput for a high volume test and reduce the test cost, claimed Seegene.

The firm’s automated system, with its auto analysis software Seegene viewer, is useful in an epidemic situation, where thousands of tests may be carried out in a day, providing test results in four hours.

Furthermore, when used along with the firm’s other high multiplex respiratory assay portfolio, it becomes possible to accurately diagnose, stated the company.

Seegene can manufacture 100,000 Covid-19 tests a day to meet the growing demand.

Seegene CEO and founder Dr Jong-Yoon Chun said: “It is meaningful that our molecular diagnostic technology and product can contribute to the international community in need of this new virus.

“We are pleased to report KFDA approval of our Covid-19 assay and are ready to support global healthcare organizations in need of our diagnostic solution.”

According to the Korea Herald they've tested some 140,000 people in ROK.

The Times and some prat named Ed Conway being utterly fucking exceptional with a hot take. Wu Flu is grand because it'll kill off the old who are 'climate deniers' and stop the economy. I'm happy to consign people who live in glee at the concept of being reduced to a stone age full of young people with Media Studies degrees back to the stone age, frankly. Right now. No electricity, transport beyond a donkey or their feet, central heating or modern medicine for any of them.

The Tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist in me says liberal politicians are puporsley mishandling the disease hoping to infect all the old people who vote more conservatively.

C'mon San Fran, don't be bigoted. Let those blighted bastards into your city and enrich the ever-living fuck out of your immune systems!

Letting them stay on the boat will increase the number of infected but taking them off could potentially spread it on land if they’re not properly quarantined.

Quite the situation but you have to be a fucking moron to take a cruise and to do it during he middle of a global pandemic. Idiots.

Interesting to note Russia's refusal to engage in oil price cuts. This may be seen as incidental but has major ramifications across the globe. Mostly bad. With super low yields on Bonds, and oil prices starving out many countries, there are winners and losers.

Who will lose? The USA, expect huge bankruptcies in the energy Bond and Junk Bond trades within 30-60 days. Texas will be smashed. Saudi will have to conduct austerity or create a war to increase demand. The cheap treasuries mean the outlook stinks, and the USA will have to issue a staggering amount of debt to cover the demand and to cover it in the near future will have to seriously hike interest rates in an economy on fumes.

Who Wins? China. Cheap oil for stock piling. Their government reserves will get bloated on lovely cheap oil. In addition to this, their bonds of 1 Trillion dollars are now exceptionally valuable as many of those bonds are older issued bonds paying somewhere near 2%-3% per year while the best you'll get today is a stinking .75%. So imagine how valuable those bonds are for re-sale now? Saudi too has a lot of bonds, but sadly, to keep the standard of living they are used to, will require leveraging the bonds for cash.

Another winner: Russia. While they lose on the oil price, the exchange rate becomes most favorable, and after a number of rigs shut down in the USA, they will get their price back along with Saudi without having to increase demand.

The problem is China is causing the price drops by not consuming. As soon as they start stockpiling the prices go up again. The problem is they had ships parked outside their harbors with nobody to unload them.

Okay, over 670 cases in Germany now. Not surprised. I expected there to be 500+ cases by the end of the week. A soccer game by a huge German Soccer Club is scheduled for Saturday, right next to Heinsberg in North-Rhine Westphalia where there are most of the infections. What could possibly go wrong? Surely, no new infections will occur...

The Robert-Koch-Institute suggested to track confirmed and suspected cases via smartphone GPS data. The government loved this of course.

Germany banned the export of protective medical gear and for once doesn't care that the rest of the EU doesn't like it.

Raw, it dries the skin. You don't want to regularly rub your hands down with it undiluted or your cuticles will draw back and you will get tiny little cracks in the surface.

The purpose of a gel is to keep the skin moisturized and dilute the mix. 90% all the way.

Anyone going on a fucking cruise currently is dumber than a god damn houseplant. Cruise ships are already [and have been for quite some time] notorious for being the perfect environment to foster an outbreak. Usually norovirus or something else relatively benign in terms of lethality. Then, when you do get sick, you're stuck in the middle of the ocean and possibly contained to your suite if they're doing it right. Hell no. Air travel would be another one I'd avoid now, nothing like sitting in a box of other people's germs for twelve hours or more, the same air being circulated over and over.

Although none of this would be an issue if people would stay the fuck home while they're sick. I get our inbred corporate landscape doesn't always allow people to take time off work, so that's at least understandable. But if you're sick, cancel your god damned vacation plans and stay home, reschedule it if possible. People gallivanting around the world on mission-non-essential type shit when conditions are poor causes a lot of problems really. There's a blizzard going on but you want some Burger King? Mission-non-essential, stay off the road. You're infected with a virus that's lethal to sensitive groups but you want to hit up Starbucks? Stay the fuck home and make some soup, mission-non-essential. You have the flu but you really want to go down to Walmart to browse through tchotchkes, curios, and 'Live, Laugh, Love' signs? Mission non-essential, stay home.

Additionally, I was always surprised at the amount of troglodytes I worked with that I'd encounter in the men's room and they'd walk out without so much as turning on the faucet for my benefit. Public bathrooms are fucking gross, wash your damn hands. The run on hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes/spray is hilarious to me when just down the same aisle, there's probably a plethora of different varieties of very effective, nicely scented hand soap they could buy or bleach just down the aisle that they could dilute properly and use to sanitize surfaces in their home. Man I'm glad I don't work retail anymore, although some of the behaviors being exhibited would probably be amusing. I got sick working in a retail store more often than I ever did because people always have to drag their snot-dripping, hacking, miserable looking children to the store with them or go and cough on everything themselves. What's even worse is I live near a large Amish community and not too long ago there was a big measles outbreak amongst them. Did they stay home? Nope, they went to the store to buy some bulk bags of chicken legs and flour. The old order Amish don't seem to believe in hygiene, even, it was not the whiff of roses when they passed you by.

How will the author feel when their favorite boomer relative gets it? Will their tune change or will the sociopathy remain?

Ohio now only has 2 people under investigation. Ohio Department of Health has a page keeping track of cases, suspected cases, and people who tested negative.

Kinda OT and kinda not, but I haven't seen this yet, sorry if this is late:

The school is not divulging what department this man was in.

on edit: I wonder if we'll see more of this. Seems like there is a bit of housecleaning in order.

Why the fuck would anyone want a second industrial revolution when the first was a disaster?
