The issue remains that he lacks appeal outisde of the infamous ugandan pottery forum, he has enough of a following to subsist from the internet comfortably for a few more years at best. But outside of that intial appeal anyone thinking you can "red pill" the normies while at the same time lacking the convinction to stand by your statements becuase of bad optics is just exceptional. I haven't seen much about this, but it smells a lot like the old Colbert show was, where a character had seemingly ridiculous views that brought shock clicks and some agreement in a subset of the viewership. I have to wonder how deep the con goes or if it's genuine. That's like saying even though nobody cares about the Tea Party right now they didn't have a massive impact on mainstream conservatism, which they certainly did.
The goal of every movement like this isn't to replace the status quo but rather veer the larger ship slightly. Breadtubers and DSA types are the same. As silly and benign they are, their fervor is 100% why Bernie Sanders is where he is.
Where movements like this succeed is that they don't need to point to wild hypotheticals, it's mostly "let's go back to what was working before." That's far easier to swallow for most people, especially those who wonder silently why we need to stand and applaud for gay black conservatives who say shit like "well MY Jesus loves me and approves of sodomy." Pretty much everything starts as a small vocal movement that builds. On the flipside, it's the reason we are even talking about third term abortions now.
Ultimately the Groypers will eventually have an effect because it's part of several other movements drilling into the Israel issue, the promotion of homosexuality, and a return to national identity among other things. Fuentes won't be king of anything but I think these smaller dismissive movements do have a significant impact over time.

Though, I'd say in Hastert and Foley's case that they tend to be an exception rather than the rule. That being said, the extremes of both sides tend to attract exceptional individuals, especially in the realm of sexual deviancy. The "degenerate" police tend to be the right-wing equivalent of male feminists in that regard.

I think these people genuinely don't understand the prospect of having a response that isn't overly emphatic. You don't have to beg and bend over backwards out of fear of the dreaded r-word, or refuse to condemn mass shootings. Just say "yeah, of course I don't support that" and stay on message. There's a reason every politician has the same template 'thoughts and prayers' tweet whenever an attack occurs, it's so they can pay the requisite amount of lip service before moving back onto what they want to talk about.

I wouldn't say I despise anime as a whole, but yeah a lot of modern anime and manga is full of creepy shit. That element has been there for a long time because Japanese culture has some weird shit going on with the sexualization of minors, but it was way, way less prevalent back in the day.
What happened is that with the decline of advertising revenue and explosion of internet piracy a lot of mangaka and anime studios realized that instead of trying to get a large casual audience, the best way to turn a profit is to capture the NEET consoomer demographic who obsessively buy anime merch. A lot of shows make the bulk of their money off figurines, dakimakura and shit like that. Now think about the kind of weirdo who buys that shit and has walls and walls of it in their room. Most of them are weird incel pervert hentai addicts. These people are the most coveted demographic that anime and manga want to get as their audience right now due to their spending habits, so throwing the type of shit they like to fap to into shows to get their attention has become the norm. It also has created a culture of creators and fans that's far more self referential and insular, which Miyazaki himself complained about.
That's the reason for the abundance of fuckery in modern anime.
