Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

For The record, about the collapses. In most cases it's just overexhaustion combined with organ failure, it can happen from pneumonia given enough agravating factors. I've seen it happen once. Knew nothing of him, by his looks he was probably some homeless man, by the look of his arm he was a drug addict. Was walking through the street one day some distance in front of me, looked normal outside of the previously mentioned then, well, flop. Right to the ground. Never got up, emergency services confirmed death. Malnutrition and lack of sleep got him. Taking into account china's ludicrous policies throw in a pneumonia virus and I can see it happening on a massive scale. I think the japanese have a name for it too.

As for the seizures. Well, again, take chinese treatment of the population and symple behavioral science into account. Mass hysteria can easily explain a lot of them, specially amongst a selfish uneducated population. As for the rest, it's dehydration. Dehydration can cause a LOT of neurodegenerative damage. Throw in basic fever and that can do a number on you. Throw in stress and lack of sleep and, well, you get a lot worse than just seizures mate. Drink properly and relax and you'll be fine. Live in china, get thrown into a deathcamp without proper hydration and no information stressing the fuck out on a locked cage and, well, you'll die.

A top Iranian military official is spreading a conspiracy theory regarding the coronavirus amid an outbreak in the Islamic republic that has killed more than 100 people, including an adviser to Iran's supreme leader, and infected more than 3,500, according to official figures.

Hossein Salami, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), suggested on March 5 that the coronavirus might be an American biological weapon -- contradicting experts who say there's no evidence it could be man-made.

"Today, the country is engaged in a biological battle," Salami was quoted as saying by the semiofficial ISNA news agency. "We will prevail in the fight against this virus, which might be the product of an American biological [attack], which first spread in China and then to the rest of the world," he said, adding that "America should know that if it has done so, it will return to itself."

He provided no evidence to back his unfounded claim.

Salami also said that Iran will contain the coronavirus outbreak "even if it's not America's work."

Last month, U.S. officials said Russian-linked social-media accounts were making unfounded claims that Washington was behind the outbreak.

The United States is among the more than 80 countries affected by the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected more than 95,000 people worldwide. Eleven have died in the United States so far and more than 200 have tested positive as of March 5.

The outbreak has led to the spread of conspiracy theories on social media and news sites, including claims that the virus originated in a lab linked to China's biowarfare program.

Experts have said repeatedly that there is no indication that the coronavirus could be man-made. "Based on the virus genome and properties there is no indication whatsoever that it was an engineered virus," Richard Ebright, a professor of chemical biology at Rutgers University, told The Washington Post on January 29.

Iran Hit Hard

Salami's remarks come amid warnings by Iranian officials against those spreading rumors and fake stories about the outbreak in Iran.

The head of Iran's cyberpolice, Commander Vahid Majid, said on March 5 that 121 people had been summoned for spreading rumors about the coronavirus. He said 190 others had been warned over the phone and told to remove content from social-media pages.

"Dealing with those spreading rumors and those publishing fake news is currently one of the most important missions of the cyberpolice," Majid said.

Iran and Italy have the highest death tolls from coronavirus outside of China, where the virus emerged in December.

The coronavirus currently has a fatality rate of about 3.4 percent, with the elderly and those with underlying health problems dying far more frequently after contracting the virus.

Massud Pezeshkian, a lawmaker and former Iranian health minister, suggested earlier this week that the outbreak in Iran was far more widespread than the government acknowledges, saying many infected citizens had not been identified.

Vice President Masumeh Ebtekar, Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi, and more than 20 parliament deputies are among those who have tested positive in the country.

Mohammad Mirmohammadi, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni, has died from the disease.

Chick wants to go on a cruise before she dies. And now she's stuck on that fucking death barge and might not be able to get her next chemo treatment. And this is only the second most depressing thing I've seen today after that photo of the 88 year old granny looking through the glass at her 89 year old quarantined husband in that nursing home in Washington state.

So what you're saying here is, we have a chance to get rid of the homeless.

For those in the Georgia area. There is one new suspected case in Gwinnett County, just outside Atlanta. It’s a travel related case, not a local infection. This one is via some backchannels and is not public knowledge yet. So you have your heads up. Go quickly and start buying all the toilet paper before it hits the news!

You know what the really funny thing is about all this? This doesn't even necessarily have to be a bioweapon at all, if we accept the theory that it came from a laboratory.

Biosafety labs work with gain-of-function pathogens all the time. You don't even need a BSL-4/P4 lab. SARS-CoV is frequently handled in BSL-3 labs, which are basically fucking everywhere.

They have actually made gain-of-function SARS-CoV strains in labs in the US before, before they realized, "Hey, wait a minute, this might not be the smartest idea, so let's fucking not do this."

Right along with your grandparents and anybody in your family with a pre-existing condition. I know I will be fine, but It's not me that I'm worried about. Also I'd much rather this fucking plague kill all the cocksuckers in the federal government along with the heads of the CDC and the media before wishing ill on some broke crazy dude who doesn't have a pot to piss in and never did me wrong unlike the feds...

It tickles me to think americans probably didn't originate being 'ugly' abroad. However, we anglophones have collectively been this stupid since at least the publication of 'Innocents Abroad' where Twain and his buddies call all the tour guides "Ferguson" because they can't pronounce their names.

Lol, for years I've tried calling tour guides Ferguson just to see what happens. I've had three tour guides get the reference. One in England, one in Italy, and one in fucking Russia. :story:

Donald Trump needs to stop talking about this and let Mike Pence do his job. Media is still going to bait though and he will bite and the frenzy will continue.

But I'm still happy to see my leader out there, even if he's wrong. Our openness and willingness to admit our own mistakes is always going to be used against us. Meanwhile China is spending time and money trying to blame everyone else. Nice.

I think the japanese have a name for it too.

Karoshi, or death by overworking. Salarymen would work so hard and get so little sleep and nutrition(working through lunch and staying very late and missing dinner are common) that the wear and tear combined with stress would lead to heart attacks, strokes and aneurism. Add to this the Japanese work ethic of never complaining and being expected to work for the companies sake no matter how sick you are and you get office drones dropping dead at their desks and on the train.

The government passed laws and reforms to reduce the number of deaths, but it still happens.

I agree, let’s go back to harrowing tales of the status of TP at the local grocery store or yarns about their brother’s girlfriend’s cousin’s dog groomer that believes everything WHO says.
Speaking of your girlfriend's cousin's dog groomer, here's an email I got from Petco a little while ago:

March 6th, 2020

Pet parents,

I'm Dr. Thomas Edling, a 25-year veterinarian with a special interest in infectious and zoonotic diseases and a member of the Petco Pet Wellness Council. I work regularly with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to understand how various health concerns may affect pets and the broader pet industry, and I am closely monitoring the currently evolving outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. I've partnered with Petco to create a dedicated collection of the most important things people should know about pets and COVID-19.

First and foremost, we are following and reinforcing all guidance and resources available from the World Health Organization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and so should you.

We've also been disheartened to read reports that some pet parents in areas where the virus is prevalent have made troubling decisions about abandoning their pets out of misinformation about how the coronavirus spreads. Pet parents under no circumstances should be abandoning their pets because of COVID-19.

The most important things pet lovers should know today are:

According to the CDC, there is currently no known reason to believe that any animals, including pets in the United States, can spread COVID-19.

  • To date, the CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19.
  • The CDC always recommends following everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of illness.

People who are sick with COVID-19 should restrict their contact with animals. If you see any changes in the health condition of your pets, advice from a veterinarian should be sought as soon as possible. As always, pet parents should adopt good hygiene habits, such as washing their hands before and after handling pets, their food and supplies, and maintain a clean environment.

A full FAQ about coronavirus and pets, what Petco is doing to protect the health and safety of both people and pets, and links to additional resources are below. In partnership with Petco, we will continue to monitor this fluid situation closely and update this page as more information is made available from the CDC.

Sincerely,
Dr. Thomas Edling, DVM, MSpVM, MPH
Petco Pet Wellness Council

It's a licensed veterinarian with common sense advice. Probably the most sensible thing I've read regarding pets and WuFlu since it started.

edited for grammar, on the phone with my vet for kitty meds atm

Right along with your grandparents and anybody in your family with a pre-existing condition. I know I will be fine, but It's not me that I'm worried about.

The best thing you can do is make sure those you're concerned about know what precautions they need to take (which they should be taking regardless of covid-19 if they're in a vulnerable demographic) and ensure they have the means to take those precautions.

So what you're saying here is, we have a chance to get rid of the homeless.

Personally I'm hoping it takes out all the insane, incompetent, stupid assholes we got running the country. If it could pull a "spanish flu" and infect the royalty over here it'd probably at least kill the last Kaiser's granddaughter Sofia and our own Borbon fuck Juan Carlos I, and taking intobaccount all their corrupt deals with morocco and saudi arabia the world would definitely be a beter place. But, well, viri do tend to wreck the homeless, inmunosupressed and ancient, and politicians have better healthcare than the rest. :(

I don’t understand the rabid journalist and twitterati response to Pence on this. Acting as the lead agency coordinator on something like this is actually the type of thing that Pence does very well by all accounts.

That R0 is incredibly optimistic for the USA. All it takes is some selfish asshole to "just go about living their life" to infect scores of other people, and the US is full of those idiots.
We are a country that has never been bombed. Our civilians are stupider than shit.

I remember my college military history professor said that Americans were spoiled because they never had to live through war time conditions like the rest of the world during ww2, thats why our tanks are automatic instead of manual and most american armament depends on tons of hours of work before use. the idea of never having a supply chain and spare parts has never been a problem in the US.

its amazing how much shit places are out of. outside of the gas shortages from before i was born, i don't think there has ever been such a widespread thing in the US, outside of hurricanes and dumb shit like that, but even then those are pretty few and far between and the businesses can usually prepare for that shit.

Also its pretty amazing how no one follows China anymore, no one gives a fuck about their numbers. They apparently said the infections are slowing down. but i also heard someone on /x/ say the Chinese already cremated 6 million people so far this year, so who knows whats happening

Hotel in Quanzhou of Fujian province collapsed. 70 people buried under the debris.
It's one of these cheap hotels, and it's being used as some kind of a medical quarantine centre where professionals work and medical devices are used.

Someone claimed that the ground floor and second floors are “4S shops” (vehicle dealership, 4S = sales, survey, spares and service) that are undergoing construction, and someone knocked the main truss/foundation of the building. Basically this would be some kind of thick wall that's the main pillar-kind structure to hold the building up.

Wouldnt put it past the ccp to have filled it up with dead virus bodies and knock it down themselves so they could list cause of dead as something other than Wu flu.

Six cases here in Peru now. Four are related to the first patient, the other one is from another region (the second biggest region), a man who came from vacations. All are stable and isolated at home.

Here is the thing that I noticed following some worldwide maps: S. American countries are quite big. One region of Brazil is as big as a medium size Europe country. And these areas tend to be quite isolated from each other because bad infrastructure. If you see a map and see the whole Brazil being painted red, looks awful, but it's only a few regions from the South. In Argentina is the same.

Anyway, 90% of cases here are from Europe. From Italy, specifically. Most patients are fine, healthy, low symptoms, some are in hospitals, some are back home.

And this quoted from Bloomberg just an hour ago below in quotes. This repeated story of denied testing is rampant across the entire country, we'd have the greatest health care system, if it actually worked. Hopes of containment are utterly dashed at this point. I wonder when airlines will simply shut down all together. Our death rate (which is grossly under-reported) indicates easily in excess of 1,000 serious cases (meaning people with pneumonia in hospitals aren't being given tests). Meaning we have well over 8,000 cases nationally. Meanwhile, South Korea, China, Japan, Italy and France in one week still tested more than the entire United States has done since this started.

"In late February, two New York City women returned from a Nile cruise in Egypt feeling ill. Their symptoms worsened, and one soon had a pneumonia-like illness.

They learned this week from New York City’s health department that someone else on the cruise ship had been diagnosed with coronavirus. But in spite of their symptoms, the two women -- who are in their 60s and 70s -- were initially told they weren’t going to be tested, according to Amanda, the daughter of one of the women, who also lives in New York City and has been closely involved in her mother’s care.

Amanda, 31, said officials from the New York City health department told the women they could pose a risk to others if they traveled to a health-care facility, and that if they did test positive, there was nothing that could be done. She said that was the point where she got involved, and was able to get her mother tested later that day."

Here's the data from WHO on the mortality rate by age. It's our parents and their parents that are in for a very nasty ride. Given the age of the senate and an assumed infection of 40%, we will see quite a few House Reps and Senate members go.
